One story that comes to mind is when my group and I wanted to steal a banner from some of the orks. At that particular Conquest they were not in their own camp, but rather in some bigger mixed camp. So one night my group wanders into this camp and we realize that we did not plan for what to do next after passing the gate. We did not know where the were camped and could for obvious reasons not simply ask. As we did not want to keep standing in a group in fear of attracting too much attention, we came to the bright conclusion to all act inconspicuous. So, there were 15 guys aimlessly wandering through the camp whistling. Which was of cause totally not suspicious. ^^ One of us found the campsite and instead of gathering us all up and discussing what we want to do, simply grabs the banner and runs. Which causes the rest of the group to one after the other also start running. The gate guards were looking mightily interested why 15 people were sprinting out of their camp. But in the end all got out more or less unharmed ^^

Cant wait for next week! What I missed about COnquest that you dont get at the smaller larp events throughout the year is the feeling on the battlefield. The war drums, the yelling of marching orders all around, the sound is amazing. I nearly got just walked over by a wall of knights marching to the front if I hadnt heard them due to the drummer that was with them.
@beckymurphy47142 жыл бұрын
This sounds like a fantastic event! I love the idea of being "user friendly" so someone who is totally new won't feel overwhelmed at their first event. I've wanted to try LARP for years, but there are no groups in my area (northcentral Wisconsin). And I wouldn't have the first clue about creating a character (persona?) and how that character would interact with others. I like to make costumes (I have a dragon knight and an earth mage; working on a winter fae and an elven archer) but I've never developed the character past the outfit, so I'd be way in over my head.
@SkillTree2 жыл бұрын
I think you would be surprised! You can always start easy. Just make the character basically YOU in a fantasy setting. As you get more comfortable being in that scene you can start trying new things like a character that is YOU but is OK with stealing or likes to fight. Then just build. Eventually it gets more fun to try on other people and see what it would be like to live as THEM.

@Philtopy Жыл бұрын
I love this desccription they did for the way Conquest is played. That is german LARP in an essence. We arent playing to try and "win" the game. We arent covering everything in complex rules and hitpoint systems. We want the experience to be a lasting one through the roleplay aspect. We want to play the best as we can, to make the other players experience the best. Ofc some do it better than others, but when everybody is engaged in making this happen, the immersion creates an emotional rollercoaster from another world. Thats why you wont find a boffer-weapon in any german Larp. And you will never find people wearing modern day clothing, just covered up with a medieval cape or sth. When coming home from a german LARP you will feel like you really have been in another world and you really have experienced these moments like they were a real thing. You dont talk so much about your player killcount or sth. you talk about that crazy discussion youve had last night or about that time you tried to steal that super important ican or sth like that. But a warning: German Larpers are a lot more immersion oriented. Meaning if you come around in a very fakeish plasticy attire, or you play as the stereotypical "tall dwarf/fat elve/peaceful orc/ cat person with fake ears and tail in your butt" for example, meaning a character you cannot properly portray or that is too cartoonish or silly, or you are using Boffer weapons and very synthetic clothing, you will have a harder time finding people to play with at conquest and other german Larps.

Well... I´be been to Conquest for about 15 years. I still get shaky knees, when I stand right in the battle-line short befor they clash into each others. Adrenalin kicks in, the screaming starts, foes and frinds going down left and right, battle at its best! But! If you are not into fighting, well, there is plenty of stuff to do. Quest to do, riddles to solve. Negotiating with other groups. Only because it is not an udead, well... it doesn`t mean he is your frind. Feuds among the groups are common and backstabbing (political and litteraly) are some way to go. Laws and etiqutte are difrent from one encampment (a generall term which smaler camps with a common goal) to a other. Get the information! Or better: Send a ambassador to find out. If you have one ;-) And there is the "Tross" a small city on the move. You can buy all thinks you need for larp there. For real money of course. Weapons, armor, arrows, bows, crossbows, clothing of all kind, bags, boots, and food (the best fantasy one)! And what do other players to the game? Well... it gets bigger and bigger every years. One year players brought in a 30m long, 12 m wight and 6m high viking house! Made of Wood! And that only one thing. Players are very ambitious. 'Trucks with trailers filled with stuff to make it bigger and better. All for the imersion. I can talk on like this for 10000 words... Go there. See it. Feel it. Be part of it!

The one playing the drum with someone’s hand is not from the Undead Flesh though. Looks like it’s Squee, the goblin bard. He’s such a nice guy in real life and a super cool player in LARP. This year, I will go to the Drachenfest for the second time and to Conquest of Mythodea for the 4th time. Come visit the Tross, there are definitely no shady gangs, illegal rooster fights, back rooms with a casino and burlesque dancers or any dubious backstreet-alleys. 😉 But there are arabian teahouses, a jobcenter from Al Sabara (who also help new LARPers find into the game if they don’t know what to do on their first large event), Zuber in Bad Norderby (those hot tubs they mentioned), an actual barber and so much more. Happy to see you there!

Maybe try searching for a larp group in your area. There are some bigger groups that already have a selection of items, which they can lend to newcomers, so the entry cost isn't all that high. But yes, larping isn't cheap. Then again, it's also a chance to learn new things, make your own clothes, learn how to do embroidery yourself, work with fabric, leather, maybe even metal. It's a great opportunity to learn new skills.

This event reminds me a LOT of Pennsic! So cool!!
@theexchipmunk2 жыл бұрын
Its in concept actually quiet diferent from Pennsic. The CoM is a Player versus NPC con, where the Players come together to plot and fight against the "armys of evil". Pennesic is more like Drachenfest, where multiple camps of Players fight in differnt ways for victory against each other.
@tkeeling22 жыл бұрын
I guess what I should have said is that the overall vibe reminds me of Pennsic, which I've been attending since 2001. 🙂 Pennsic, and the SCA more generally, isn't considered a LARP. I'm seriously considering going to this event though, despite the fact that I don't speak a lick of German. 😆
@theexchipmunk2 жыл бұрын
@@tkeeling2 I would really like to know why Pennsic isn´t considered a Larp? And just go there. Speaking German is not mandatory, all the imprtant stuff is in english too and most Germans can comunicate in a reasonable english. There is also a lot of foreign groups from all over the world there, so there very likely is one from where you are.
@tkeeling22 жыл бұрын
@@theexchipmunk It's just, not. It's considered more historical reenactment, with anachronism allowed (glasses for those who wear them, for example). Now, lots of people *do* consider the SCA to be a LARP, but most folks in the SCA will fight you on that. Pennsic is an unusual SCA event, that doesn't require a membership in the SCA to attend.
@theexchipmunk2 жыл бұрын
@@tkeeling2 Well, they might not like it, but by definition they are not reenactment and are Larp. They lack the point of reenactment, that is, depicting a time as acurately as possible, mostly doing so by recreating actual events. And they show all the marks of being Larp, namely playing roles and making up completly new storys and not being focussed on the accurate depiction of a historical time. Pennesic is more on the fantastical end of the sub gerne called historical larp. There might be overlap with reenactment, but the core focus is role playing.

Conquest ... yeah ... definitly an one time experience. I've been there from 04 to 14, the later half in the city as one of the founders of the "official mages guild". It is shockingly big and pretty well organized. But to call it larp is imo a bit confusing. It is that much a larp as a music festival is a concert.
