There is no perfect, there is only the best compilation of trade-offs for today, which will vary by use and user. I like the way you think, and especially the gurgle. The quiet and subtle noises of nature shouldn't be contaminated by annoying gurgles of design. Mistakes are the best teachers. I hope to be ready to build when you get the release version out. Thanks.

I watched the video of your previous River Runner version - and must admit that combining the best of both will result in an impressive boat. I do like the flat rear deck of the first one as I don't see many camping trips so will keep loads down to the minimum. However, I do like the extra bit of stability from the extra chines on this model. Like you said, it is all about compromise and should be tailored to how the greatest number of folks intend to use it. Overall I do like the slightly shorter length (vs the F1) and extra rocker makes it seem like it would be a hoot in rock gardens as well as surfing and playing in waves. The fact that it can also do that 1-2 miles to a play spot is great and may even want to use it for fishing. Lastly, love that stern drain plug!! I would love to commission one of these as soon as you are ready and able!

This looks like a fantastic midwest boat. Many rivers with mild rapids and camping options. I would love to buy or build one!

It would be really excellent to revisit this build for a final version to release! Being a Michigander, inland lakes and rivers are around every corner and from your description it sounds like it checks nearly every box. Even looks stable enough to go out on a quick paddle without a skirt, and then load it up for the weekend camping tour. Looks like it may even have some maneuverability when putting it on the big lake. If you need an inland beta builder/tester I would be happy to build one of these!

For anything flat water or even slow, moving water my F1 design is vastly superior. This boat only makes sense if you’re going to be running continuous class 1 and class 2 Whitewater and maybe the occasional 3 if you know what you’re doing and you can pick a good lines. It’s on the list for things to keep working on. I just have lots of design projects ahead of it.

@@capefalconkayak Good to know, thanks for the reply. I'll have to make a more careful consideration on the F1 when I choose my build. Just have to finish my 3 wooden paddle boards when the weather warms so I can epoxy. Then its Kayak time.

Update? I’m out east, but inland, so my primary use for a sea kayak would be river touring anyway, and this seems like the best option. I would love to see this on the website soon.

You are a very good presenter. I know very little about canoes but I like the idea of making one. Have you used a type of modelling clay to change the shape of certain details when you are making prototypes? I don't know if it would work but it might help in some cases.

Hi Brian, love your videos. They are equally informative and inspiring. Simply curious, but when are you hoping to have plans for a river tourer available? I’ve been mulling over a few designs, but would jump at this one. All the best and thank you for sharing.

To decrease the vallum in the rear with out it "popping a wheelie", increase the rear's length with out moving the cockpit back; the increased length will make up for the decreased width

Kayaks being weight sensitive, this sounds perfect for a slightly heavier person. You might want to starting thinking about a range of kayaks for lighter and heavier people. My two cents, I love narrow hard chined kayaks but hate wider hard chined kayaks, so I can completely see the dilemma in choosing chine prifile. My three favorite kayaks; Mariner coaster, Valley Anas Acuta, and [this is my weird point] the completely rounded chined Nimbus Solander. All three are perfect kayaks that exist on different limbs of the design tree.

Hey Richard, our flagship kayak, the F1 (over a thousand built in the last 13 years) was originally based on the Coaster (with permission from Matt and Cam) we build it in 7 different sizes for people from 100 to 260lbs and have a whole library of tested modifications for people who want to tweak the performance in different ways. Being able to custom size things for each user is one of the big advantages of what I do. Once I get a shape dialed in, then I start working out the sizes.

I can't say enough about the F1 ... built one of the big guy variants way back in 2010. Today it's still my go-to boat and other than a surfski I haven't seen the need to buy another boat. It does all I ask of it and it's a hoot to paddle. Brian's designs are top shelf!

super interesting that adding in a little chine shape negated the good performance points. suggests that ww and sea boats may not quite overlap on a smooth continuum. hope to meet you on the other side of that null point!
@capefalconkayak4 жыл бұрын
What sucks is that I had it stringered correctly and then I cut off the stringers at the last minute to try a more aggressive chine. I'm still glad I did it though because otherwise I would have always wondered. If I had done it right though I might not have decided I need to reshape the stern, which really does need to happen. I always try to start with a simple rib length formula, in this case 5 1/2 inches, but things inevitably get more complicated. I just hope there actually IS a point at which the hull becomes balanced.

How much flex would there be in the back deck/hull and-or the front deck/hull if you inflated the Trac bag to its maximum after you inserted it in hull compartment? What I'm getting at is; can you inflate the boat up a little bit and change its shape ever-so-slightly by inflating the bags?

Why not add a retractable skeg? I have an 80s white water fiberglass boat on which I added a skeg and it tracks really well on flat water, but still super maneuverable and turns on a dime

Beta yet? I’m not an advanced whitewater paddler, so I don’t need the ultimate perfect boat. In fact your current stability profile on this is extremely appealing; and speed is definitely not a significant factor for this 73 year old guy. I’d be very happy to be a part of your R&D, I’d also be v fine with video documenting the build. In fact perhaps one of the versions you’ve done might even be better for me, in that spinning on a dime is more interesting than super tracking on the flat. Also the raised stern for more gear is not important to me, and certainly the shorter build is valuable.
