Skinning a 3 ft Tall FurReal Friends Butterscotch Pony Animatronic

Well, I certainly wasn’t expecting to get one of these so soon, but I’m so excited I found her! This animatronic is absolutely huge. She’s a lot bigger than anything else I’ve worked with, and Candymare has a very detailed character design with a lot of room to just keep adding more details. I’m super excited to start working on Candymare, and I can only hope that this animatronic actually works. Best to not look a gift animatronic pony in the mouth.

Hey there! Sorry this is so weird and random but I’ve recently acquired a Butterscotch myself who needs some repair work and I’ve been trying to find photos or footage of the internal mechanisms around the neck base, which caused me to stumble upon your video. Most of the content on the internet about her is so old, but seeing as this is a fairly recent video, I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask if you’d be willing to share a few pictures? I’m trying to avoid having to skin my girl as she was a childhood dream toy and I’m trying to get her back to her original state.

Hello! That’s not weird at all! I haven’t skinned my other Butterscotch yet and I can’t open this one up (I’m customising her to look like a character), but this might still help? I believe that Butterscotch originally came disassembled, so she was without her head in the box. If you run your fingers along her neck, there’s a horizontal zipper that connects the fur of her head to the fur of her body. It’s hard to see, but it’s there! If you unzip it (mine had a cable tie holding it shut I think, so you might have to cut that), you should be able to access her neck without doing any damage! The head can be removed totally (for transport and stuff) but I haven’t done it myself and I think it might be a little bit risky. Depending on what the issue with her neck is, it could be a problem with the motherboard, which I don’t imagine is an easy fix. My other Butterscotch has a weird issue where she only really wants to move her head to the left, and I think that fixing that is beyond me a bit. I hope that was at least a bit helpful haha. I’d love to hear what you did if you manage to fix her! Good luck!

@@tobyhorrorboy Oh no sorry I didn’t mean to open it up! haha. Obviously I wouldn’t ask you to do that! By internal I just meant past the fur, sorry that was unnecessarily confusing. I’ve been hoping to find a few pictures like looking into her neck on a Butterscotch whose neck /isn’t/ broken so I can see how it’s meant to look like, and possibly through some of the little like...vents? on her torso to see what’s in there. My girl has cracked plastic pieces and /something/ isn’t connected properly as a result of that-not sure if a piece broke off or the damage caused something to dislodge. But her neck is like, “dead weight” for lack of a better word? Like there’s no resistance at all so her whole head/neck just hangs fully forward rather than upright like it ought to be so I know she needs some work haha. So I’m trying to figure out what got broken to see if it’s something I can repair. But all the electronics work thankfully! I wouldn’t be competent enough to do anything with those 😂 I actually remember reading something about the heads only going left in my various Butterscotch searches-if I see anything useful about it again I’ll let you know! You seem too knowledgeable to just try to break one of your ponies heads off but just so you know since you mentioned it, the pony heads are designed to lock on and no longer be removable after the initial installation-the have those plastic pinch tabs that lock into a covered/inaccessible area. There is a video already here on KZbin though where a clever man figured out how to drill in a hole to access them and take the head off, should you ever need to! I’ll be doing it to my girl soon, poor thing 😂

Hello! And I can’t wait!. But I actually had one of those growing up (how idk) but! There is movement in the neck eyes mouth (obviously) but also the tail(I think mine lost theirs) and in the ears as they would twist and turn. I hope this helps with making candy mare or flutter shy

Why are the sensors always covered with the silver things on the electric stuffed animals, or is it the sensors themselves?

Oh man, I’m actually not totally sure. I THINK that the silver bit is part of the sensor? Like maybe the wire is what connects it to the rest of the robotic bits, and the silver bit is the bit that knows if there’s contact with like a hand or whatever? I’m not sure, I’m a sewist, not a roboticist (Bones from Star Trek moment) I’m sure there’s a proper answer though, maybe I’ll peel up one of those touch sensors on the next project that has them!

I often keep the original skin, but I didn’t for Butterscotch because it was in really bad condition. It looked like it’d been rained on, and it was super dusty and dirty

I’m not 100% sure because I don’t know anyone that got one when they were released, but I looked at a few Amazon reviews and I THINK that they were about $250 USD originally. So expensive and they take up so much space. I can’t believe I found mine in the rubbish!

I didn’t actually open up the hooves so I can’t say for sure I’m sorry! I think you’d have a problem anchoring them in if you’re planning for someone to sit on Butterscotch, because the frame needs to be able to hold that weight, if that makes sense! You could certainly give it a shot though, and if it doesn’t work at least it’ll be on the bottom? 😅
