+Mindfear2006 Skip James had some songs that could make people want to get up and dance, but look at Skip here. There's no cross talk from the other musicians (unlike during other performances). Nobody's moving around or clowning. He's got their full attention and to enjoy his music it needs more attention to hear the nuance and his genius. I think about some footage of Booker 'Bukka' White from this same night. He could start a party all by himself. Within a couple of verses he had people up and dancing. He invited the banter with Howlin Wolf and the other musicians. I'd never try to pick one style over another in this case, but I think Skip was probably 20 or 30 years ahead of his time. If a 28 year old Skip James had walked into a Greenwich Village folk club in 1960 he would have been an international sensation.

Some of his songs were covered by Robert Johnson so obviously he had respect among the blues men, but maybe he was just too far ahead of his time for the wider public, I hear a lot of neo soul and modern jazz in his songs.

Yes I have the video. Devil Got My Woman: Blues at Newport 1966. Howlin' Wolf, Reverend Pearly Brown, Bukka White, Son House were all present. It's Son House rubbing his hands and clapping at the end of the song. (The video is cut short so the clapping is not presented)
