12:10 FYI, The Mike is the non Dline defensive player that the Oline is responsible for. Most fronts are 3 or 4 down Dline, and in those cases, the 5 Oline are responsible for blocking at least 1 more defender. 98% of the time it is a LB, but sometimes a walked-up safety/corner. In simple terms, you are going to choose mike based on who you want your Oline to move towards to block. If correctly called, the frontside Oline (usually guard/center, or outside plays might be tackle/guard) will start with a double team or chip block on the frontside down lineman, then work up to the Mike after the backside Oline overtakes the Dlineman. This makes a hole (the double team displaces the Dline) for the HB to run through. For inside runs, this means that you want your play side, inside linebacker, or who would be the first to fill the hole, to be Mike. For outside runs this means you want to have the frontside outside backer, or who would set the edge outside of a DE (or a walked up player on the frontside edge), to be the Mike. This is a really easy call for even #’s of backers (3-4, 4-2, etc) as they typically will have frontside and backside backs that are not stacked such as in a odd # of backers (3-3, 4-3, etc). For odd #’s and particularly the annoying 3-3 stack, you will sometimes need to call the middle backer as mike, but even on inside runs, there are times were the frontside OLB is the mike (mostly b/c the defense has shown that they are cheating coverage to that side, indicating blitz frontside). In conclusion, stop the primary non Dline run threat by using the Mike on rushing plays. For passing plays, things are a bit easier. First, if you have a back staying in to block, the mike is the LB on the opposite side of the back. This will tell the Oline to pick the frontside blitzing mike up, so the back can more easily protect the backside of the play if multiple threats blitz (it means the HB doesnt need to cross over the front of the QB, potentially getting caught up, missing the block). If in empty or no backs are staying in to block, then we would call the blindside of the QB (i.e. Left backer if QB is RH, and vice versa) the mike. The idea being, that the Oline can pick up the blindside pressure better, and the QB can see the blitzing LB who might not be picked up. IDK how well this translates to ingame though. Complications happen with PA and roll outs, but it would depend on what you want to protect more. In my case we blocked our PA like a run play, so our Mike matched our run play calling scheme. For roll-out/boot plays, we would call the mike as the furthest most defensive player in the box opposite side of the boot, so we would have our Oline moving away from the boot and our back would try to block/distract the boot-side edge-keeper, allowing the QB to roll out. Source: I played college football as a center, and it was my job to call mike…
@thatoneguy97303 ай бұрын
Pretty cool they included that on the game. I thought the mike was the middle linebacker, what does it mean then?
@hihilow563 ай бұрын
@thatoneguy9730 I believe you're correct when talking from a defensive standpoint. Mike is the middle backer(s), Sam is strong side backer, and the will is the weak side. I was specifically speaking from an offensive perspective, which is the one in which you declare the "mike" using the hotroute menu. It is probably 80-90% of the time going to be one of the middle backers, but there are commonly times a non-MLB will be Mike. Like I said, it's the 5th hat that the Oline is responsible for blocking. Because in most defensive fronts, there are 3 or 4 down D lineman (as in, they are on the line of scrimmage), the 5 O linemen need to block at least 1 more player, hence that 1st of the extra players is the Mike. As an example, for outside runs, the middle backer is going to flow over top the play, while the OLB will try to fill/set the edge...therfore the OLB would be the 5th the Oline needs to block since they are the primary run threat outside of the down Dlinemen. To complicate things more, we can have a safety walk up outside of the DE. For that same outside run, the safety is now the primary run threat, therefore is the 'mike'.

@hihilow562 ай бұрын
@@peterbentin1395not a problem! This is the spark notes version of things, it absolutely gets more complicated as defensive schemes fk everything up with different shades of the D line and line backers doing straight up tomfoolery to try to disguise a blitz or coverage... I'm a huge fan of the KISS method (Keep It Simple, Stupid) which helped me get it right most of the time (easier to remember 12 "weird" scenarios vs. Memorizing the opponents playbook each week lmao)

On the play actions where you know what direction you are moving, set your linemen up to block that way, I bet it will give you more time in the pocket... well most of the time. Also whilst doing that look at how many players on the defense are line up on the side you want protected, If theres 7 on the right and 6 on the left you should block right and vice versa. The only time that idea fails you is when they are covering a blitz and unless you can get the tells from the defenders (By faking out the defense in a fake hike) then thats all you get.
