Exactly understanding the goals, even with the explanations on the sheet, is somewhat frustrating. I wish there was a video explaining just the goals.

I agree! This happens to be one of those games where, to simplify the presentation of the game board, they have created a huge number of symbols. Those symbols are not the most intuitive when you first learn the game. It reminds me very much of 7 wonders in that way. The good news is that with only a couple of plays of the game you will be able to decipher them much easier.
