I lock maps with glass panes to make custom maps for mini-games. For example, say you're making a haunted mansion and you want maps of each level. First build your house, then create a blueprint of the first floor in the sky directly above, lock that map, then do the next floor, etc. Now you have multiple custom maps that actually track player positions.

One tip, when making a secret room behind a map wall, i recommend having at least a 3x3 map wall and only make a 2X1 entrance somewhere along the middle row of maps That way to get in you have to jump to get in, so its hard to stumble across on accident.

If any official Minecraft coders see this (unlikely) You should be able to put a map inside of a book and quill. You have to have the item in your inventory, and open the book. The book and quill will now have the layout of the bedrock version, but it also will have a new button at the bottom. It will be an "insert item" button. You click it, and your inventory will pop up. There, you can put an item from your inventory into the book. Up to 6 items can be put into the book. I'd really like to see this in the game!

fun fact you don't even have to use a whole chuck up to make these map patterns there's actually a website that allows you just to completely replace the map texture for specific numbered map so that it has that design that way you don't use up space in your world, at least i think thats what happens but it could just replace the chuck with whats in the map

@Tom4704 yes, if you dont have op you would have to do it the vanilla way, although you can save a worldedit schematic of the mapart in a world of your own then give the file to an operator in the server, then they paste the schematic. You just need to make sure they paste it in a spot where you can see the whole map art in the map
