I'm a newbie in my 60's and this video & book has got me into the hobby. Suits me as its quick to set up & play & even my Wife has played a few times. I've used ACW units on a Goblin battle mat using adaptation of rules. Its got me reading more about the hobby & historical military books. Thanks, Mike

Yes these are skirmish but we've played quite big Starship Troopers games with 4-5 players each handling an infantry squad and the bug players get allocated bugs to control as they start to swarm. We modified the rules so that ALL the bugs move once at the start of their go and then any subsequent movement is based on their action card. We also introduced a house rule where if any bug moves within six inches of a squad they get an immediate reaction shot. Just one card against the bug's one card. It doesn't kill but it will stop the bug and drive it back one base depth.

Have never had a chance to actually *run* a game from One-House Skirmish Wargames, but I do love the thought taken in the design of them! It's a welcome book in my gaming library.

Excellent review gentleman. I agree with all the points you raised and the way you qualified them. This is a perfect game for quick pickup game, where your gaming friends have not had the opportunity to organise a 'bigger' more in depth game, modern deal live can all too often disrupt that! Perfect, as you mentioned, for gaming through those more minor actions of a campaign. These rules, like others of this level and complexity, lend themselves to artistic, inventive, narrative orientated scenarios. Where the fun is found in playing out the scenario objective/s. All too many sets of rules over emphasise fancy, complicated rules mechanics, turning the games played into more like a chess match! I love this game for what fun it provides me and others who I game with. I very much enjoyed your review and thank you for posting. Liked and subscribed accordingly.😉

Looks like Fun, what we used to call a "Beer and Pretzels" game. I'll be looking for it, I have all these figures hanging about.

I just discovered "One-Hour Wargames" that I use for my ACW and 1870 6mm miniatures (and certainly 10mm fantasy figures quite soon), and I'm going to buy the Skirmish version, for my 1870 1/72 figures, Vietnam figures and Sci-fi. I was looking for this sort of games because I lack time to play more complex rules and I lack space too. So, thanks a lot for the review.

In my oppinion combat resolution is not so positiv. With cards you create dependend events that shouldn't be dependend on each other.If you for example draw all kings for charakter A and B for defence, character C can't get it on his shooting.

I think this is a fair review. I spent a bunch of time playing and reviewing this when it came out, and JL was kind enough to weigh in with some clarifications. I will disagree with your "three pros" on the rulebook. It is conversational, yes, but it is confusing, with essential rules scattered around in sections 20 pages away. It desperately needs a "bullet point" at the top, with the chattiness afterwards. It is a very simple game, but you can tell from the errors people make playing it early on that the rulebook is only going to work for a diligent and careful reader at first. Secondly, I think that while you correctly emphasize the game as a true skirmish game of 5-10 figs per side [up to 15 with experience] you don't emphasize enough that card draws can be extremely unfair and result in one side "not having fun" periodically. So anytime that one pulls this game out, one has to accept that the RAW allows this. With simple modifications, nearly any of the game's limits can be 'shaped' to taste, but people of a fragile emotional disposition may grow to hate the game. Finally, a point that deserves considerable emphasis - while the rules are very simple, winning with the game regularly is a bit tricky [so it rewards a thoughtful player] yet new players [which the hobby DESPERATELY needs] can throw down and start playing quickly. Because the mechanics are not complex, winning tactics become apparent to an experienced gamer in 1-2 sessions, and a true newbie may start figuring them out right away with a bit of help. A revolutionary game system!

Yes, thumbs up from the UK, excellent review. Just ordered my copy, arriving in the first week of January. I do play with friends but health and age are reducing 'play time' so these look good for easily adapting to solo play on a smaller table.

Thank you for sharing your videos and for introducing and reviewing the One Hour Skirmish Wargaming rule set. Not to put you on the spot, but since you gentlemen have more experience with the rule set, how do you resolve infantry close combat attacks on vehicles (Tanks). The rules warn against letting infantry get super close to vehicles, but I am not seeing a process to resolve an infantry attack at Armor Piercing value of 1. Thank you for your help.

I'm wondering how these rules handle cover, range or any other standard modifiers for the opposed card draw. If you are in a "hard cover" building, do you get to draw more than one card? Or if the shooter has a special skill or weapon - does he get more cards or other modifiers? Interested to know - thanks for the review.

There’s soft cover (draw 2) and hard (draw 3). And yeah, there’s tons of customization for special units.

The presentation looks like the 1970's Featherstone books - not a negative. Still will stick with 'Arc of Fire' for anything 1890ish-present.

Did you ever adapt the game for Star Wars? I had that in mind before getting the book and then your video sold me on the idea. Just curious if you had any specific adaptations. Thanks! The review was great.

Pretty good review! I think this kind of simple games are really needed. As for "skirmish": "a game of individual figures" is probably one of the defining aspects of skirmish games. Though it's a grey area, and it's also about the "scale" of the engagement: for example Ambush Alley doesn't allow you to command individual figures, yet I'd still rate it as a skirmish game. Most "Big Brand" wargames are skirmish games too, in my opinion, in the sense that if they were real they'd be reported in the news as "a skirmish between loyalist and chaos forces", not enough figures or room for anything else!

It's a pretty random-style game, with no rhyme or reason why one side is rockin', while the other side sits and acts like a rock (though good for beginners).

Nice review video. Thorough without being too long with fair/objective discussion/evaluation. The only questions I have after watching are - with combat, does the card mechanic factor in cover at all? And you talked a bit about some optional rules to build in some era-specific tweaks. Do those bog the game down? Are they easy to implement? Do they make the game feel more tailored/less generic?
@StatsScott
@StatsScott Жыл бұрын
@@sturat5166 Thanks. In retrospect this was clearer once I watched the game playthrough; wound up just watching the rules overview first. That aspect was a nice mechanic of reflecting harder to hit in cover without totally re-doing a separate mechanic to the main card approach.
