Loved the park ranger sharing that as a kid he and others just got dropped off and spent the days there. This brought visions of long days filled with all kinds of matches and contests among the kids who went home tired and to rest ready to do it again the next day. It's clear that kids today are able to do the same. Awesome!

Without Buhl Farm course, I would have never had the opportunity to discover golf. As a working class kid, I taught myself to play at Buhl (or Dumb Dumb, as it's known by locals) with a 5 dollar make shift "set" of clubs that I bought from the local Goodwill. I live in Pittsburgh now, but I still play Buhl everytime I come home to visit family - my all-time favorite golf course!

The atmosphere of this club reminds of learning to play in Scotland as a pre-teen in the 1960's. Public Courses were not free but extremely cheap (I still feel guilty paying more than £1 per hole even now; more money than sense). Family groups were in the majority on the weekend and everyone was tolerant of kids with more enthusiasm than ability. After 15 minutes of a 7 year old kid trying to advance his ball, his father would wave the group behind through. Miss that atmosphere.

In 2013 I played a few rounds of golf at the Gate Ranch golf course in Washington, just southwest of Olympia. It was operated by two brothers, Jim and Bill Dunson. After reading an article, I discovered that they have both passed away, and the fate of the free-to-play 9 hole course is unfortunately up in the air. I also found out Mike Rowe did an episode in "Returning the Favor" highlighting this course and its owners. A great watch for anybody into a feel good story and golf.
