Have you ever wondered why Chinese strokes are important? Chinese strokes help us write the characters faster and easier. The shape and movement of the pen can also help you read someone else’s handwriting.
There are three main reasons why Chinese strokes are important:
1) It helps you remember the characters
2) It helps reduce errors
3) It builds muscle memory
In general, in Chinese, we write characters in the following way:
-From top to bottom and left to right
-Horizontal before vertical
-Diagonals right-to-left before diagonals left-to-right
-Enclosures before content
As you are considering why Chinese strokes are important, you might feel like you are conforming but you could always add your personal style without you having to compromise on the structure.
There will be some exceptions where natives write using a different stroke order than the dictionary recommends. See more about those and what to do in the video above.

I find that knowing the stroke order also makes it much easier to decipher Chinese people's handwriting, especially when they write in a more cursive style and all the strokes start blending together. Knowing the stroke order, you can easily 'reconstruct' the character.

Very nice. I got into Chinese characters in a strange way, by learning brush calligraphy, as part of a class on Chinese brush painting. That’s an excellent way to appreciate the beauty and balance of the characters.

I dunno about the rest of it, but it definitely helps stop your Chinese teachers from complaining. I remember attending a summer program and the teacher would always have me demonstrate the correct stroke order when one of the other students messed it up. Thanks Skritter?

Inspiring and encouraging. Happy to start learning charactetrs with Skritter. Interesting fact - the commonly used handwriting recognition software like Sogou does recognize the character more likely with the proper stroke order (even when it looks quite sloppy on the screen). So Fiona isn`t a native bilingual speaker of Chinese? When did she started to learn Mandarin then?

As a left handed person I find writing the stroke from left to right (横) very unnatural and difficult. Horizontal strokes in any language we usually write from right to left. If you are right handed, try to write horizontal stroke from right to left and you'll see what I mean.

Proper stroke order is IMPORTANT , because it will improve your 行書 and your ability to read the 行書 from others... Not only this, it will give you a sense of the right proportions of the strokes in every 漢字 and you will learn to balance the widths, the lengths and the right angles so that the harmony of the character will shine by itself and your calligraphy will let connoisseurs gasp ..... You will find better the 漢字 you are looking for in many types of dictionaries.... You can't emphasize enough the importance of stroke order. ... Soooooo: practice and write , write, write, write all day long as much as you can and you will see the fruits.....

skritter using the chinese stroke order for traditional characters makes not much sense unfortunately when there's a taiwanese standard, where they are actually used :(

Many of our characters allow for different stroke orders, and the overlap is pretty big so it's not too big an issue to study Traditional characters with Skritter. Are there any characters in particular that you find don't work?
