"SKRUNNING" - EPIC RUN III - A NEW WINTER SPORT IS BORN! (2.7K 60FPS)

We’ll be back soon with regular outdoor adventure trips and vlogs, but we wanted to share what we’ve been doing for fun during our winters - this was actually filmed a year ago (just haven’t been able to edit it until more recently)… when we decided to try filming another epic running video on the downhill ski runs at Tremblant in the snow. To our surprise, it turned out to be wildly fun and incredibly exhilarating running through the moguls! I tend to get a lot of questions about my gear when I make these running videos and I wanted to mention that no drones or motorized vehicles were used in the filming - just me awkwardly running up the hill next to Julia, with a Hero4 Black Edition on a 3-axis gimbal at the end of a long counterweighted pole, which took lots of practice to hold smoothly at the balance point while running, and then skiing down beside her. Afterwards, the shots were warp-stabilized in After Effects, where I painstakingly rotoscoped 10,000+ individual frames of video at 60fps (more if you count the shots that didn’t end up in the video), to remove the tracking points on Julia and other foreground elements, so I could get the absolute smoothest track possible on the background. Yeah, kinda crazy, lol… but I wanted viewers to think they were smooth drone shots right next to her. The clips were then round-tripped back into FCPX where I did a lot of rotational keyframing to either hold the horizon level or smooth the roll axis even more. (Technically) Nicely done.. 👍🏼 Here's some food for thought though.. I have just finished rendering a (lousy, compared to yours) video in 25 fps because I noticed Sir Neistat now renders his in 24. And as it seems.. Filming in these rates seem to positively affect my experience of viewing moving objects. But frankly, I can't see (too) much of a difference of moving objects in 25 fps and 60 fps.. However (as I am watching the internet on a 4K monitor), I *do* spot the difference between (HD) 1080p on the one side, and (SHD) 1440p or 2160p on the other. So to make a long story short.. it's (now) my experience that _a great looking video has nothing to do with frame rate_ but it has *everything* to do with the SHD/UHD format/dimensions the film was shot in. Despite of moving objects in the video.. The only time I would probably consider shooting/filming in a higher frame rate is to afterwards render to slow motion scenes.

Hey Rudy, thanks for your thoughts. I tend to shoot native 24p when I'm storytelling or vlogging, though I shot and delivered this piece in 60p for a lot of specific technical reasons. Filming in 60p effectively reduces the amount of camera movement between individual frames of video, and also increases the shutter speed, both of which result in more clearly defined image detail, giving me more accurate tracking information to work with per second, and a cleaner track in After Effect's warp stabilizer (the raw clips straight out of the camera are actually a little jittery / shaky because I'm running so fast with it over uneven terrain). Early 24p test shots stabilized in AE resulted in smeary looking edges, and more wobbly results in the image, so 60p was definitely the way to go for this project. Most pro cameras that shoot 60p allow you to adjust your shutter speed accordingly to account for your use in post whether it be realtime playback or conformed to slow-motion... however, because the GoPro's shutter automatically speeds up to account for the higher frame rate (particularly on a bright sunny day with changing light which makes it difficult to use an ND filter), converting those frames with really high shutter speed into realtime 24p afterwards gives it a really harsh "staccato" look, that looks unnatural, almost as if it's flickering or stuttering when there's a lot of subject motion. It would be different of course if I was conforming the 60p to 24p for creating slow motion, but my goal was to make these shots look as smooth or "drone-like" as possible using lots of detailed stabilization in post, and my eye could see a huge difference between exporting in 24p and 60p. Long story short, it really depends on your camera and how you intend to use it in post :)

Thanks for answering.. 👍🏼 I guess I forgot the wobbly effect of (software) stabilisation.. I am still trying to learn how to deal with that.. It's probably best to have a good hardware stabiliser but that's still too much €/$ for me, for now.. Decreasing this effect by pumping up the fps sounds smart as you have effectively more frames to work with / ignore in post.. But apart from software stabilisation I guess I will stick to my previously comments.. 😋

Thanks so much Magnus! lol, it was actually an old broom pole that I taped the handle of the gimbal to, and then I taped a few objects to the opposite end until I had just the right amount of weight to balance it in the middle. There's a shot of us skiing at the end where I'm holding it in the other hand (...though the counterweight might not be visible). I found the best shots came when I held it loosely and let the camera follow its own momentum :)
