So if someone has just invented fighting game, and I were to do the same, just with different characters in it, you cannot sue me for infringement, because the concept "fighting verse game" cannot be copyrighted, it's an archetype. "Fire ball", "dive kick", and "dragon punch" are concepts. Back to the case of K9999, it gets sue not because of the moveset itself, it gets sue for its look. Also, Japan is actually quite lenient about derivative work (you probably heard the word, Doujin/Doujinshi, before), so homage and even direct reference itself are considered shinkokuzai under Japanese copyright law. That is, unless stated (like in K9999's case, the creator sued) derivative work is prohibited, they usually just let it slide, because derivative works help the original work grows too.

Everything on PC.

There are a ton of Gear references in Skullgirls. Just looking at palates alone: Fillia has two inspired by Millia, and a third (I think) inspired by Ramlethal. Cerebella has a Potemkin palate, Valentine has Baiken. Big Band has ANOTHER Potemkin as well as a Robo-Ky. Both Fukua and Robo-Fortune have Robo-Ky as well. Eliza has an I-No palate, and then Annie obviously has Sol/Ky. Frankly, I'm just sad there's no Faust alt for Valentine.

Don't get me wrong, Xrd REV-2 is a wonderful looking game. But when I say that Skullgirls animates better, I really mean it. Notice how in Xrd some moves look stiff and awkward in motion. Annie replicates the same moves while fixing the shortcomings of the "2D but actually 3D" animation of Xrd.
