Sky Glass TV Review | One Month Later...

Reviewing Sky Glass after a month of testing this smart QLED TV, the successor to Sky Q and possibly the ultimate streaming telly in 2021. With this television, you no longer need a dish nailed to your house to enjoy those many, many channels. Instead, Sky Glass can stream all of your shows, movies and sports over the internet. Setup is simple, taking only a few minutes, while the Stream Puck can be used to beam content to your other televisions.
Sky Glass' QLED panel isn't as bright and doesn't boast as strong contrast as rivals from Sony and LG, while PS5 and Xbox Series X fans miss out on 4K at 120Hz. However, the audio output is sublime, removing the need for soundbars and surround sound systems.
One big deciding factor in the Sky Glass vs Sky Q argument however is the use of playlists instead of local recording. No longer can you store TV shows and other bits on a box, instead it's all done via the cloud. Bums.
That's my thoughts on this Sky TV after one month of full time use, but what do you reckon? Let me know your thoughts below!

You don't need to record! It has the search and save to cloud feature. You will never need to record.

The + is the record button basically. It’s just displayed differently. I’ve Had mine a few weeks and no complaints. Sounds awesome. Bit fidgety at first to get used to but all good now 👍🏼

Thank you for your overview. I recently migrated to Sky for TV and was sent a puck and the remote you feature. I agree the voice command feature is impressive. However, within two days the remote started playing up, the buttons, sporadically, didn’t “light up” and pressing buttons failed to get a reaction on the TV. A day later and the remote packed up completely. I rang Sky and was told that the remote would need to be replaced as it was defective. Obviously, without the remote the puck is useless and the TV cannot be watched. The lack of a recording facility means I can’t even watch a “downloaded” series whilst waiting for the replacement remote. I then learned from Sky that this is now a common issue and that there is now a two-week backlog on sending out a replacement remote. So much for watching the World Cup! With best wishes.

Could possibly be an option instead of multiroom? Saves having wires going all around the house and also having to hide cables from the 2nd box etc. If you are an existing customer, and you wanted this as a 2nd device, would you need to pay for multi room ? Or just pay for the TV plus your standard subscription?

had mine for around 6 months now and apart from the odd glitch im more than happy the picture quality and sound are more than adequate and just the fact that for the first time in years i havent got a mass of cables and extension leads behind my tv is a huge plus. so overall im very happy with what i have and never struggle for something to watch as i have loads to watch if im at a lose end due to the shows i have saved in my favourites.

I don't think the lack of recording is a problem... add series to Play list and the prog stays there and adds new episodes of the series as they appear. I've done this with the soaps, with any series I fancy watching and it's not a problem for me that some of the things on the play list opens up the relevant TV app as it usually only adds a couple of seconds onto the time. The most annoying thing for me is the facts that the TV turns off automatically if it detects that you're no longer in the room... sometimes I nip to the loo or to the kitchen to make a coffee and it turns off while I'm out of the room

In Australia, it's called Hubbl Glass. They do require you (here) to accept all software updates and keep it connected to the internet. It's not a set up once and plug in a firestick sort of thing.

Whether or not the missing channels are important to you or not is a moot point. I think an ordinary consumer would expect Sky Glass to have the same channel line up as normal Sky, and that's something worth mentioning in a review!!

The biggest problem for us is that ITV is not over reliable. 1. we cannot get the ITV regional news for where we live (Somerset). instead we get Central. Not a lot of help. 2. Itv keeps feezing and the only way we can get it back is by switching to another channel and back again. This isn't a problem with our broadband, we have FTTP and download speeds of circa 120mbs. In addition, I agree with your comments about the playlist. If you add an episode of a serial, it adds the whole series, both ones you have already seen and future ones. But you cannot delete a single episode , you can only delete the series, including the ones you haven't seen yet!!

I was thinking of getting this, but I record stuff and use Sky through my hifi system. No soundboard can compare to the sound I get, but no ability to record is the real killer for me. I can't understand why they haven't included storage. There looks to be room for a 2T hard-drive and it wouldn't have cost much more. As a long time Sky customer I feel they've made a huge mistake. I 'll stick with my system until they get the thing sorted for serious users. Good review by the way. It answered all the questions I asked. Unlike Sky which failed to mention its limitations.

And since more and more devices kept getting more and more efficient they kept adding pluses to the top A rating, which started to look dumb. So they reset. I don't know if they only changed the letters or if they also changed the power usage numbers they refer to.

I got Sky glass and it seems ok. Mounted it on the wall and the sound really is good. The disappointment for me is the picture. When I see that a tv is 4K I expect to see the ‘nearly real’ quality on my screen but to then find out that it doesn’t support a higher frame per second I was a bit gutted. The picture seems no different to my old HD tv. Never the less, I’ve got it now and the deal I got was cheaper per month than what I was paying for SkyQ so that’s good in these expensive times.

All depends on the source. And the picture will be compressed even 4k... If its busy the speed will drop. You don't get any of this with satellite.

Not sure what it is like in the UK, but here in The Netherlands, 4K delivery through cable is still incredibly limited if not impossible due to bandwidth restrictions, some broadcasting unions have only reasonably recently switched over to 1920x1080 compared to how long the standard has already been around. Internet distribution is also problematic because as people already mentioned: compression is a thing, fast movement can make a blockfest out of the image.

The ability to have Sky without a dish outside the property would be one reason they made this alternative. I'm not sure if they really had to create a TV to achieve this, but I guess it's one way to do it. A lot of home renters have landlords who forbid satellite dishes without any explicit reason other than a general "it just kinda looks scruffy really" excuse, and the tenant can't really argue it. This would help those people.

Having read a lot of initial reviews and the launch show, I bought a 65inch version: Pros: No dish Less clutter (wires, home cinema etc) Built in soundbar Cons: Poor picture compared to an OLED TV (you can get an LG/Sony OLED version for an extra £100-£200, its a huge upgrade in quality) UHD and Dolby sound package has no noticeable impact Not being able to record is very frustrating I returned the TV last week to Sky (collection and delivery was well managed by Sky). It seems a big pull with the soundbar, no dish, less wires etc...but the picture quality is not close to what you can get for a little extra. Overall, I think you are better off with Sky Q and a OLED TV.

@@kanyewest2729 the fact you cannot record a single thing is a big put off for everyone, plus live TV like the football or Formula 1 is essentially a stream, which will be a minute or 2 behind, if i wanted that, I’d just watch a dodgy stream form HesGoal, i wouldn’t pay £100 or so pounds for the privilege. The only thing this set up is good for is people who live in high flats who can’t get a Sky dish installed or someone very rural who stays deep inside the amazon where a sky dish is blocked by every tree. At first when it was announced i liked the sound of it, but the fact Sky hardly mention you cannot record live TV tells you everything you need to know.

Thanks for the review. I recently helped a friend install this TV as it came as part of a cheaper sky subscription so he went for it. He had it 4 days before returning and buying a Samsung oled, cheaper and more stable than this nonsense. First off even if you're a full sky customer this thing is a cut down a lot compared to the Q box. It has half the channels and no recording deeming it pretty rubbish for previous sky users who are used to the full shebang of sky services. Pretty much a downgrade from a q box if youre happy to spend the cash you would over time on an actual normal TV which gives you full function of a telly without any added gimmicks or taking anything away from the usual viewing experience. Outputs are hidden and with no way to add a sound system, this made for a quick cold shoulder from my friend who has a 3k linn system with floor standers which would be amazing for games and movies had sky given that option. That or even just Bluetooth so we could buy an adapter, but no. Sky being their arrogant, obnoxious selves as per usual, basically giving no choice as if their built in Atmos sound is going to compare to a 3 thousand pounds stereo system!!. On top of that, we put an Xbox one through the thing and it at first did not want to display but with further investigation we eventually (several hours later) got it going only to wirness a terrible amount of flickering, screen tearing, missing textures, broken sound, the TV changing source by itself and only, laggy, unbuffered and pretty much attrocious to play. This TV should be recalled until they have dedicated it to everybody, not just sky users. Obviously it's a sky TV and naturally you wouldn't have the telly without that subscription but this is where they get you. It's only food for sky streaming and not much else. It's huge, abnoxious and feels like even after a full purchase (which my friend had done) it still belongs to sky as does the user. My advice? Don't fall for it unless sky is all you want on your TV. My friends new Samsung oled 75" beast cost £29 less than this and to be honest the difference was immediate. Picture quality, user friendliness and actual actions of a TV with a source button on the remote and ample means to link a TV to an older sound system unlike the nonsense we had just experienced. Samsung took 2 hours tops to set up. That included setting up a pc, a sound system and a console all working fantastically. The sky glass however took a full day of sighing scratching heads and figuring out we had been had, with nothing connecting or acting as it should. The thing is literally a gimmick for existing sky customers!! It's an insult that a better all round TV actually worked out cheaper than this junk. Also Sky pretending to be eco friendly with their cardboard packaging backfires when you have at least 3 full bins of cardboard to get rid of and every time they send you a new product with it comes a new plastic and metal built router, half the parts non recyclable!! Why? Just why? If you wanna go down the eco friendly road that's fantastic but don't try and full the general public into believing that's what's going on when in reality most of your "old" tech probably goes straight to landfill anyway!!. I'd score this TV less than 2 out of 10 compared to just about every other current set out there at the moment. I'd never ever ever buy this.

After a 3 weeks I've gone back to sky q, had enough of the sky glass freezing, loss of sound and having to change channels and back to continue thank goodness I kept the sky Q equipment. My Internet connection is 72mb and 60mb at worst, I have been able to keep the TV as it is exerlent with the quality of picture and sound quality.

@@semiblindbritguy2268 I’ve just ordered sky Glass today, I asked the guy about recording programs he said you can record they’re kept in the cloud. They also demonstrated the sound. A sound bar is incorporated within the tv. I would suggest talking to the staff in a sky shop you get way better information and they can demonstrate the tv too. There are hdmi sockets too. Plus as I was in store and already a sky customer he tested my broadband to check I had adequate speed.

We have to remember the energy rating is high because of the inbuilt soundsytem it has so if you had a separate soundbar on another TV both those energy ratings would match this TV combined.

That energy rating is pretty average tbh. It's not high at all. Energy ratings were changed back in March 2021. So any A rated panel would now be rated G. So F is actually not bad.

Had mine for 2 weeks now. Its a great concept for those like that want sky but can't put a dish up but also want a good TV without paying full price upfront. I now have a 55 inch UHD TV with lots of content in one convinient place and so far only paid 52 quid. Now it's not the best TV panel around for sure, it's gotta be affordable after all. So I won't compare it to the dedicated Samsung, LG, Sony, and even TCL. The quality if viewing at an extreme angle is not the best, but straight on as you normally would be watching TV the quality is great, very crisp. I suggest you put it in movie mode and turn off the auto backlight for the best results. Don't tweak too much. The sound is awesome, its incredible on dolby content. It's not as powerful as a dedicated theatre sound system with subwoofer, but that's the same for other TVs. This TV has one of the best out of the box audio experiences. Yes the recording things will and has pissed alot of traditional Sky users off. If you are used to that style of recording do stay with Sky Q it's more superior in that sense. Sky are not leaving Q, Glass is just another product for a different demographic. I personally don't record, I like to watch live and then scrub on demand. Its cool that one can install get access to the library of episodes in all the streaming services in one place. There are a few annoying bugs so far. Good thing is that they seem to be software based so an update can fix them. One really frustrating bug is the HDMI CEC feature which allows you compatible devices to be controlled by your TV and vice versa. Unfortunately it screws up with Glass auto wake feature to the point that it has to be unplugged at the main to wake it up. Once I turned it off on my Xbox, Glass was waking up alright. As a long term early adopter of many gadgets I'm not surprised by the version one bugs, so I know how to adapt. In conclusion, it's a great concept that makes UHD TVs even more affordable and the Sky service more appealing. There are many great TV panels on the market and I suggest you shop around before you settle for this, but Glass is a nice all in one deal. The bugs and feature limitations will bother some, so I suggest you wait a year or at least 6 months for the major issues to be ironed out. If you are on Sky Q, do not change, just go buy a new TV if that what you're looking for.

I used to record EVERYTHING and was constantly watching repeats of shows I'd watched over and over. Was a big decision to move to sky glass but so glad i did. Yes there were teething troubles at first but now i wouldn't be without it and as I have nothing recorded it's opened me up to shows i would never have watched and i now do and LOVE as no planner to fall back on. Just got sky glass this week. Searching a programme tricky as you can’t see the fast forward. Sky Q was much easier for this. Tv good we went 55. Teething issues such as lost pic on prime, but had sound. Had to log out of app and switch tv off and then re-booted. Then worked. Sky Q also added wider Wi-Fi coverage so it’s likely we need at least two new booster hubs to make up for sky Q loss, a main box and mini box. So some of the house lacking as puck and main tv have no Wi-Fi element at all. We have until 4 Dec with our 14 day trial , so gonna be interesting as two others in house after two days not happy and miss Q product. I think we need to be patient but certainly Q worked especially with recording the crap and being able to watch. New product and will give it a week before we decide. Sound excellent. Great review, thank you. The elephant in the room for me is broadband speed. We can only get 18mb max which is not enough to watch uhd content on more than one tv and be doing other things with the internet around the house. That’s why a satellite service is essential for us. Also I note there were no program up/down buttons on the remote so how can you slump on the sofa and just lazily go through the channels until you find something vaguely interesting? Plus of course not being able to record is a massive failure in my opinion.

I spoke to one of the SKY sales guys in a shopping centre and although we get about 28mbps as its on a 4G connection they said they wouldn't sell Sky Glass to me as it wouldn't work, due to the speed and the 4G as they stated we would break the fair usage policy even though we have an unlimited 4G broadband contract with Three.

My brother in law and his wife has the 65" they hate it, the picture constantly freezes, the colours seem faded, and most content they watched on there sky q isn't available on the sky glass and both there pucks stopped working with in 2 weeks, sky told them they will have to pay £50 each to have them replaced, there gutted as they gave away there 65" LG wich was a much better TV.

Just thought I’d put an honest review on here having nothing but issues with mine, had it almost a month, first tv I received had to be replaced kept switching itself off, second tv not much better, puck doesn’t work keeps crashing, no picture no sound sometimes both tv still randomly switches off having to reset almost daily, I have fast internet before anyone recommends looking into it, I would avoid for a while until they get rid of the multiple bugs in it.

Would recommend switching TV off at socket at night (or day if shift worker). Switch on ten minutes before viewing to allow channel rebuild.

We went for it as the cost for the 55" was exactly the same as our current basic Sky package plus our Netflix sub. Yes you can use without a sky subscription and it has freeview built in. Have to say I'm loving it and the no record is not the issue I thought it might be, you just effectively stream on demand. The only thing to be aware of is how long the show you want to watch is available for. I feel this may end up being like a phone contract where you reach the end (TV paid off after 4 years) and are offered an upgrade for a similar ongoing price.

I have Sky Q and when my internet goes down, I still have Sky Q. Do you see the problem? The longest I’ve ever lost the Sky signal for, is a couple of minutes, but as we all know, your broadband can go down for hours, or days if you’re really unlucky and that means “No Sky TV”. Yes, it’s a fantastic idea in theory, but the frustration factor would be too much for me personally. Great video👍

It does have a built in Freeview tuner, so if you have an aerial connection, you can watch some channels, although not dedicated Sky ones. My internet has not gone down in the last five years - maybe just lucky.

@@systemsbuster9539 Too early to launch with so many glitches. Have to rely on iPlayer, more 4, ITV hub etc for playlist. Some programs don’t show up when added. Tv turns off sometimes. Biggest issue is your programs in the playlist only stay there for a short while, depending on the apps, so have to watch them quickly before they get removed. Had two pucks that would occasionally switch off. Just not running properly. Even the guy from Sky said he would wait a year before he got one. A lot are being returned. TV had an OK picture, sound isn’t too bad, but the hype isn’t justified. Nice to not have cables, but there’s not enough plus points for me to keep it. Over 100 channels not on Sky Glass that can be found on Sky + HD and Sky Q. No shopping channels and less movies. Not paying for a full package to have less channels. No freeview and what happens after two years when the warranty runs out? It’s a big expensive box that is useless without Sky, so what would you do with it if you want to upgrade?

I assume Sky got its name because of the original concept of the picture coming from the satellite. Now they are trying to push people to get their stuff via broadband. I know satellite is only for standard reception and broadband is needed for all the add ons etc, but are they planning to pull the plug on satellite reception eventually. It's ok saying a clunky satellite on the roof but those clunky satellites are far more reliable then some people's clunky broadband. More chance of losing the pictures through internet failure then there is from the clunky dish.

You add them to a play list. So you never have to worry about space. In addition it gives you all episodes available so if you've missed an episode or come late to a show previous seasons are there. I'll admit at first its frustrating but you get used to it. And it does have a continue option so you dont have to hunt for the next episode in the list of episodes available

If I could make my own TV, I would call it SmartVision. It would: - have Freeview and Freesat built in - come with onboard storage and allow you to record, as well as pause and rewind live TV - let you add shows to a list, from either Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV or live broadcasts, even let you download iTunes-bought movies, TV shows and music videos - let you build your own channel list, consisting of channels from both Freeview and Freesat, so you don’t have to hop between the two for channels on one service that aren’t on the other - be modular, so you can replace a broken screen, add another HDMI port, expand onboard storage, maybe even add composite AV ports for connecting older devices - have a 120hz screen, maybe upgrade to 240hz later on - be available in many sizes, from 24 inches to 75 inches - be available in full HD, 4K and 8K - have 50 built in Sega Master System games, playable either with the remote or Bluetooth Sega controllers (sold separately)

The most disappointing thing about sky glass for me isn’t the lack of recording but in fact that it replaces your sky q whether you want to or not. I just wanted a small affordable tv with sky built in, to make a sleek wall mounted option in my extension. I don’t want to touch my sky q set up as it works well, even if I have router or WiFi issues. If I go down sky glass route I have to do away with my sky q and install pucks which places the sky reliance on a tv the other end of the house and increased reliance on my broadband and WiFi. I would have thought an integrated sky q mini would have been a good option.

I havent had Sky in about 4 years but kind of miss it. I'm very much used to only being able to use iPlayer, ITV Hub etc. So to me, I think this is a good purchase and a step up. For someone like my boomer mum who's only ever had Sky, Sky HD and Sky Q - she would hate this and wouldn't be able to get on with it and I wouldn't blame her. Was originally estimated 30.000 would pre register the actual figure was over 80.000 back in early November 2021 when I received my 55" Sky Glass TV and Puck Unlike the Sky Q minibox the Puck will stream in UHD HDR to a UHD HDR compatible TV like ny LG 65" Nano UHD HDR Tv I have all the Sky channels except sky sports but I do get Sky sports news/mix & racing. I also have Disney + ,Netflix & Amazon Prime I connected my 4K disk media player via HDMI and connected my 12 TB external hard drive to the 4K media player allowing me to view its contents on the Sky Glass TV

Think this is only worth it for people that can't have a sky dish outside. I tested one of these in a sky booth and the picture of course is no way as good as an OLED tv, so would just be a downgrade. The recording function is also a big let down, ive got loads of films etc saved on my box.

This tv seems to be a solution in search of a problem. It has a built in sky app seems to be the selling point but they could have released such an app for any modern tv therefore allowing them to sell their services to owners of quality TV sets that don’t want a dish but will pay for sky. Then ignoring the app itself you’re left with a mid range lcd television that’s presenting itself as high end. It’s not high end though, anyone who has got used to an oled set will be disappointed with the lcd screen and anyone with a new ps5 or xbox will wonder why their new tv doesn’t work with the best features of their new console

After my old Sky+ HD box died I have just opted for SkyQ, slightly cheaper than my old deal and I miss some of the features of the old menu system. If they offered it I would go for SkyQ but streamed over the internet, so I could do away with the wok at the bottom of my garden, if only! Dishless Sky with a record facility and my Panasonic Plasma, that would make a fat man very happy!

Great review and a real eye opener. I was pretty much sold on the whole thing having been a Sky fanboy for years but like some of the other comments below, the whole watch list vs recording might actually put me off. If onw day they provided the option to plug your own portable HDD in to the back and format it appropriately then that would work for me. You could at least take your recordings from TV to TV unlike the current Sky box scenario.

I fundemantally disagree with it being just a streaming TV as 1: you are always reliant upon a stable internet connection which isn't always possible when Openreach are in your area; 2: if you particularly want to keep something for posterity then you are reliant upon the programme always being availabe to stream and as highlighted by the video, this can change. My point was that consumers should have the option. It would not be hard to code, the Sky software could recognise a USB storage device or SSD, format it as needed and then you have external storage. When selecting a programme you could choose whether to stream or download just like you do on Sky Go or Netflix on tablets - which is another supposedly streaming only service yet they have found a way to do what I am suggesting.

isn't it basic common sense that you shouldn't buy a streaming TV, unless you: 1. Prefer streaming your content 2. Have ultra fast broadband? Stick with Sky Q. Problem solved. They're not getting rid of it. But lots of Sky's customers only watch streamed content, never record anything, and consider 500mb/ps internet to be the norm. I have Sky Q. I never watch live TV on it. Or record anything. It's only there because it came free with my broadband.
