Sky Hunters: Ukrainian Border Guards Gun Down Iranian-Made Drones

Ukrainian soldiers have been honing their skills to shoot down Iranian-made drones with machine guns. Russian forces have been using the drones to launch attacks across Ukraine. The Ukrainian military says it is having success gunning down the drones, even as Russia continues to change tactics.

They're also being trained by the UK and other NATO countries. Like 20,000 Ukrainians have completed training in the UK so far. There are also an unknown amount of Ukrianian soldiers being trained in combined arms tactics in Germany, basically being taught how to use Western MBTs, Western IFVs and infantry all together in concert. I can't wait to see Leopard 2 tanks and Bradley IFVs operating together alongside British-trained infantry, all using NATO combined arms strategy together in the next counter-offensive. With Western tanks, IFVs and training, the Ukrainian army is going to steamroll through Russia's lines.

yeah, sanctions are just an arms race. country forms new shell company or any other sanction busting tactic and then the sanctioning country applies sanctions to that new entity, repeat ad infinitum. sanctions aren’t really meant to stop supply of things but make it really hard and expensive to get them.

Shotgun won't do much against a drone though, even with slugs, due to lack of range. I might buy that you can shoot down a big and slow drone like a Shaheed with rifle vollies.

They're using the same stuff just a different manufacturer. Machine guns though have much shorter range. What is more critical is identifying and targeting. Guns are useless if you just learn to pray and spray at moving targets.

They have been given a lot of M2s and sighting equipment, and Soviet-style machine guns with retrofitted sights made from thermal gun sights or surveillance cameras, as well Avenger combined Stinger and M2 platform. But it's hard to cover a country as huge as Ukraine with machine gun fire.

Do you know back here in United States guys use shotguns that are specifically made for high altitude shooting for geese I think if you with modern load I think you guys would have good success with that I would use double lot buck and there’s no 3 1/2 inch magnum it has a real high potter charge behind it I think those drones would have some problems. It would be neat if there was some sort of Lead computing gunsite to show how much forward of the drone to shoot. I remember back in the 1950's US F-86 jets had lead computing gunsite...PUt the pipper on the target and shoot. Hit every time..

B-17 gunners had something similar but not nearly as good and the B-29 had a very high tech sighting computer at the time. Modern processors should be able to predict where to aim so you get on target with the first rounds. I imagine the recoil is going to screw the aiming up a tad though.

Or make a lead computer with a laser that points where the guns should be shooting instead of pointing at the drone - then you can have accurate volley fire without needing sights on every gun.

The US does have similar gunsights (rather scopes). They have a dot that rangefinds and corrects for environmental conditions so the dot shows exactly where the round will land. They are issuing them in the US military along with the new battle rifle and conversion kits for the M249 using the new .277 Fury rounds. One would think if it's already rangefinding and considering environmental that it would be relatively trivial to add a velocity correction for shooting drones to the code.

Shotgun is efficient at max 40-50 meters on a soft target. He mentioned distances of 200 - 300 meter 😉
