You a very lucky to see Montezuma Quail!!! I lived in Arizona my whole life and traveled all over the American southwest, but I have never seen Montezuma Quail! They are very elusive creatures. The male is stunning! BTW - As for my hobbies, I am a nature generalist and I have studied animals and plants around the world in my free time.

With one set of guests we saw like 20 of the juveniles fly off from the grasses right here on the property, and then I also saw scaled quail. I initially thought the latter were juvenile Montezuma's because I'd never seen them before, but looked them up and figured out it was a 3rd quail species for the property! You can see vids of these on the @sky.island.adventures Instagram account, by the way. I've just started to edit bird photos and am beginning to post them there on a fairly regular basis. Thanks for commenting, Phil, and after moving here from Portland, OR in May of 2020, I've definitely be enjoying all the new sights and sounds here in SE AZ!

Have you ever found Eleodes eschscholtzii eschscholtzii? Males can be identified by their long elytral cauda and bent metatibias. They don't seem to be very common, but there is a good population of them where I live.

I'd love to see you come across some Dynastes Granti out there. Not sure if you're in the right region, though.

Closest turn off to collect that species is 8 minutes from the property. I have their host plant in the yard and sort of dream of seeing them in the yard at some point. I see lots of Chrysina gloriosa here on property, as well as two species of Strategus, among other rhino beetles. We produced hundreds of D. granti eggs this past fall that are juuuust starting to hatch!

Hey Peter does the stuff in the fly culture ever go bad?? The food at the bottom I mean.
@bugsincyberspace
@bugsincyberspace Жыл бұрын
Absolutely it does after 4 to 12 weeks, and depending on a variety of factors like temp, how many flies are left in it, how frequently the media is moistened, etc.
@danebeee1

@@bugsincyberspace ok yeah i think it may have went bad becasue it is really watery and I haven’t put water in it in forever and there was like 100 flys in there (I added some form the store to it) and they are all dead. Not sure what happened.
@bugsincyberspace
@bugsincyberspace Жыл бұрын
@@danebeee1 It's always hard to read the outcome and troubleshoot the steps along the way, unfortunately. In a perfect scenario the media is eventually consumed by by all the larvae and then when they run out of the media to eat, the culture dies out.

@@bugsincyberspace ok when the culture goes bad does it become toxic or bad for the flys/mantis?? Also my mantis has not molted yet and I have had him since like jan 15th. Is that normal?? Seems like a long time.
