Broken Hill is nowhere near australias oldest mining town, as SKY says. It is an historical error that The ABC would never make. The Nsw and victorian goldfiels, coal in newcastle, the cornish in SA are far older. Get some real journos on SKY.

Grateful and proud to have been bron and brwd in this town and the childhood and freedom i had as a kid .. i would never want to have grown up anywhere else in the country other than this town! And yes ibe lived in so called beach paradise. We left broken jill and moved to the Whitsunday Islands lol. Still wouldnt change a thing!

WW2, fearing an invasion by the Japanese, all of Australia's gold reserves were delivered to Broken Hill by train from Sydney, collected at the station by Chas Chapple, with his freight cart, pulled by 2 horses, and delivered to the Broken Hill Gaol, where it was housed for the duration of the war. 😮

Actually its a 11/2 Hr whistle stop Where for $24 bucks you can get a fancy coach tour around the tiny and unique town of Broken Hill while the driver gives you a dialogue about what buildings form part of the town's history and how the town was once a huge mining town with a disproportionate number of hotels (pubs). Or can do a self-town walk (Free) and visit the famous Palace Hotel and see Mario's copy of Botticelli's Venus on the ceiling.

@@carmelcream7662 A Journey on either the Indian Pacific or the Ghan should be on every Australian's bucket list Like you I treasure the trips on both these great Trains as a highlight of my many holidays over the years since retirement A Ghan trip allows you to experience both trains as it terminates in Adelaide Of the two the Ghan is the better trip for the scenery and tour highlights
