it isnt clear from your playthru or site how you get coal? would you mind telling it?

Smelting Logs in a cobblestone furnace. Keep in mind that using the dirt/terracotta furnace gives you only charcoal pieces. If you're using the charcoal kiln you can even get 3 charcoal per log.
