Hell, look at the son--same picture, but even worse because he's still open to a relationship with the man. The daughter's wiser than anybody else, but at least the mom eventually wised up too, and hopefully found herself an actual good man. Her kids deserve a good stepfather.

I don't think a lot of people realize how being in a long term abusive relationship can really mess with your common sense. It's easy to call her naive or too trusting, but abuse can errode your ability to trust your own gut. Denial is a common coping mechanism. Accepting that the person you love the most is attempting to harm you can be difficult even if you aren't being gaslit by the abuser.

My abusive ex husband tried to kill me three times (plus traps to injure me). Twice to make it look like an accident and the third to look like suicide after he set up with mental health services that I was suicidal. Listening to this case has made me realize that he tired a 4th time with our gas stove and was actually the first time. It was in perfect working condition but one night it had a random "leak" and knocked me on my butt when I tried to light it for dinner bruising my chest. It was inspected and there was no leak and no issue. Now 6+ years later I realize that he asked for dinner but didn't get up to watch like he usually did. He had his "stare straight ahead and barely speak" moment he had the other 3 times. The knobs on the stove were removable allowing you to turn them, remove them and place them back in the off position. He had wanted my house and cars but to replace me with a new woman. Leaving would have meant him moving back to his mothers losing everything. Because I escaped all of the times with only minor injuries the police never cared. I spent 3 years locked in my bedroom hiding from him trying again, only coming out when he left home. He taunted me with questions about disposing of bodies and trips to remote areas. I escaped him when I found CSAM on his computer and told everyone who would listen what was happening so he would be first suspect. I never thought he would go that far. It's hard to accept as it's a feeling that Ive never experienced before. Far different to close brushes with death. Someone trying to murder you especially your partner, is something else that stays with you forever. It has changed how I see the world considerably.

I know you all cannot fathom how this woman defended his actions but believe me, if you are married and being manipulated without realizing it, many things are happening all at once that are not easily identifiable. There is love bombing, trauma bonding, triangulation, deflecting, gaslighting, emotional abuse etc. it is extremely difficult to figure out up from down until you are completely out of the situation and can process it all. This usually takes a year or more to come to terms of what was happening. I totally understand what she was thinking and feeling. I’m glad she survived and was able to heal from the entire ordeal.

I can understand how this woman couldn't fathom what he had done, because I've been there too. While I waited down on the street for a taxi to take my ex husband to a clinic for his frightening behavior, he was upstairs in our apartment poisoning my fruit juice. After I told this to the psychiatrist, the cops took him out of clinic and put him straight into jail. And yes, I visited him in prison. It's very hard to believe this all happens with someone who acted like they loved you. It takes a long time to put the pieces together. The person who charmed you and made you fall in love is not the whole person. It's called "The mask of sanity" -- The most shocking part is how they turn against you. You clearly have never been in a long-term relationship with an abusive narcissist. Stockholm syndrome is not "selfish," it's an involuntary psychological response to survive in situations where you're mentally and/or physically captive. My ex threw my then-toddler and nearly killed me (caused brain damage) and I was afraid to come home from the hospital because I felt I did something wrong by SOMEONE ELSE calling the police, and getting medical attention. That kind of abuse, subtle abuse that makes you think you're crazy and question everything you do and think and say, it's crippling. I feel for her. It's hard to get your mind around it when you realize that the other person was empty inside the whole time you thought you were helping them, and were living in two different relationships. There's cognitive dissonance. It can be too much for the mind to take, once you have become vulnerable to that person and depend on them in some way. It's earth-shattering. And hurts.

I immediately rang Carly and told her what happened. She just replied ah hes up to his usual tricks, just ignore him. She'd already told me they were swingers and that she'd caught him having various affairs including one with her cousin, I told her many times to leave him but she seemed to be under his spell.
