EVIL UBUNTU I don't get what you mean? According to Jacobites.net, "The lyrics were written by Sir Harold Boulton, Bart. (1859 - 1935), to an air collected by Miss Annie MacLeod (Lady Wilson) in the 1870s. The song was first published in "Songs of the North" by Boulton and MacLeod, London, 1884, a book that went into at least fourteen editions."

Being a fourth generation Scottish-American all those years ago, it is most likely that his ancestors settled in the US before the song was written in the late 19th century. It's a bit of late Victorian romanticised whimsy (written by Sir Harold Boulton, an English Baronet from Kent) and published in 1884. It's interesting to see how many people have been taken in by this ... 😀

@@garinleloherain333 Ah, makes sense now. I would say it is likely due to the Gaelic influence on Canada given that the Skye Boat song remained popular (particularly in Scotland) among oarsmen and folk musicians. There are also different lyrics for the song and even the tune is from another piece (I think Cuckoo something, can't remember atm) and has just been popularized in the Skye Boat song. So perhaps they're either playing the other tune or it is from the gaelic influence. Either way, I don't think it is disrespectful but thank you for informing me.

Yes this is a beautiful version. By the way, don’t get confused by the horrible situation regarding historical accuracy in the world of mass media: the version of The Skye Boat Song used in Outlander was NOT created for the Outlander serie. It’s a variant of the original song written by the famous writer Robert Louis Stevenson. The man was clearly emotionally involved with the Jacobite lore, and he wrote the song you can hear in Outlander imagining it’s an answer by Charles Edward Stuart himself to the original song. Outlander “stole” the song from Stevenson and changed the person who sings from male to female.

iona Courtenay This is the original writen by Sir Robert Boulton to ancient music discovered by Annie Macleod in 1800’s There is another version of it by Robert Louis Stevenson but although I am a fan of his I prefer the original. Few people know that Flora MacDonald exiled herself to the North American colony of North Carolina in Anson County, where she settled with other Jacobite exiles. Strangely enough, they fought for King George in 1775 during the Revolution, fighting at Moore’s Creek with targe and claymore against the musket carrying Patriot militia, and again were defeated. Flora lost her NC estates and returned to Scotland.

I know multiple people with the last name Campbell, Stewart/Stuart and O Neill. One of our counties is literally called "Scotland County," and there is a huge Scottish flag raised when you enter the county line on the highway. On the mural above the folk in the water, are the lyric's: "Closer to Skye, who's friend or foe, Who here might take him in, Gunshot's ring out, On they must go, Turn to the sea again". Does anyone know where these lyrics come from?

We learned this in choir at school. When the choir master told us the story behind it we were like "what? They wanted to kill a baby!" Still, its a beautiful song.

As someone with scottish blood also,,,,,Is it just me or doesn't this songs story seem about a cowardly act by the Prince instead of a heroic act? Honor for Scotts i supposed was about a warrior spirit and fighting to the death on the battlefield not running away. Think about the Spartans for example at Thermopylae even though greatly out numbered,,, it was honor to die fighting and never retreat or surrender. I don't know perhaps the scotts fighting style was more guerilla tactics...this is the best version of this song though. Thanks for the upload.

My Jacobite ancestors were banished to Canada and later found their way to the USA. Awful shame to see what has become of Scotland. And now this new First Minister, I understand why the Scottish government refused to consider my repeated inquiries requesting blood line dual citizenship for Diaspora Scots: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clan_MacMillan

Point well-made but I wager the mission to restore his father inevitably morphed into his lost claim to the throne as he was the one who actually undertook the effort.

It's about Bonnie Prince Charlie's escape to the Isle of Skye. His grandfather King James II had been chased off the throne in 1688 when a rebellious parliament paid his army to abandon him on the battle field. His son Prince James (who was by right King James III) tried to reclaim the throne in 1715 but failed. In 1745 Prince Charles (who was by right King Charles III) tried again to reclaim the throne from his distant German cousins who had usurped it. He took the whole of Scotland and some of England's north. If memory serves me rightly he was only around 140 miles from London (but check that). Then his generals advised him to fall back and consolidate but a trap had been set for them at Culloden. His men were slaughtered and he had to flee. Eventually he made it to Scotland's north but enemy soldiers were looking for him with orders to bring him to London for execution. A young lass named Flora tricked the soldiers into letting her travel to the Isle of Skye at night with her "maid", only she didn't really have a maid. The "maid" was the Prince in disguise. Thus she saved his life.
