As some people have already pointed out… the intensity and proficiency of the musicians, especially the drummer, bass player and keyboarder/pianist, the incredible emotional integrity of Mark Hollis’s unique vocals. Then there’s the depth of compositions and arrangements. The way they combined electronic elements with synths and organic instruments in such an intelligent and satisfying landscape of sounds. The whole thing even in 2023 is just WOW!!! I was extremely fortunate to have seen them in Hamburg on that tour, something I will always treasure. It’s been said many times but those of us who witnessed the eighties were unbelievably lucky. Truly great times:)

@Rid-iculo-us Жыл бұрын
@@magicjuand how do you define "their best"?
@magicjuand Жыл бұрын
@@Rid-iculo-us well as far as reaching the culmination of musical innovation, Laughing Stock is really it. It's the meticulous, rich, immersive sound that they had been moving toward since breaking away from pop music and you can hear the new pathways that they opened for bands that came after. Their early and mid 80s material is very good but also very much of its time. By the 90s they had become timeless.
@Rid-iculo-us Жыл бұрын
@@magicjuand it's purely a matterof taste and interpretation though. Who is to say that sounding meticulous, rich or immersive (which btw I think their 80ties stuff does just as much) is "better"? Despite, my comment was geared towards the performance in the 80ties. It's gotten a lot easier to sound good since then. And just because something is or was POPular doesn't mean it's pop-music. I never considered them that.

@@KingElectric I write from Spain. In my country young people barely knows Talk Talk, regardless it had its impact in the music panorama in its time, but it has fallen into a relative forgetfulness now, not like Queen or others 80ths classics, which is unfair and a shame considering the quality and beautifullness of a lot of their songs, in my opinion. I'm 40 years now, I just discovered this band last year. I can not believe I didn't hear of them earlier. As one of their songs says, it's such a same.
@timsalabim5224 Жыл бұрын
@@KingElectric I understand what you mean and also what Steven means. It is not a criticism that there is no appreciation. It's that Talk Talk is something unimaginably special. I knew maybe 4 songs and since a few days everything else from them. I have been depressed for several decades, sometimes severely, and the music has given me so much happiness and love in the last few days. Emotions that I couldn't feel again for ages. And that's what Talk Talk has achieved. Brilliant. that it is possible to hit the heart so precisely. Everyone in the band is on point and full of life. And at the same time I also recognise the potential that has been completely removed from the music in recent years. Bands like in the past don't exist anymore. Because it doesn't fit the agenda. There is no joy in music today. Especially not love. What is promoted is just primitive destructive crap that is sold to us as a normal range of emotions. As Mark Hollis sings, joy is written on the earth. For this reason, from the bottom of my heart, thank you Talk Talk And all the best to you :)

What a privilege it would have been to witness this live. Unfortunately I never saw Talk Talk live, but it's testament to their phenomenal talent and creative integrity that they could reproduce or even improve upon the amazing music they produced in the studio. Fucking awesome band, one of my all time favourites. Obvious to me that bands of this calibre rarely receive the accolades they deserve. Isn't that what makes them so special, and why "special people" are the ones who truly appreciate them. Let's face it, most mainstream rock music sucks, even Bowie"s number 1 hits were few and far between. Realise guys, we are the privileged minority who understand and appreciate this beautiful music and pay it the respect it deserves!!

The passion on display is just so infectious. What a great gig! I loved them in the 80's as a teenager and had a couple of albums on cassette but it's only in recent years that I've bought the vinyls. They've really stood the test of time, unlike many other 80s bands. One of the best, along with The Sound, another criminally overlooked band who were fantastic. There's a great new documentary called In a Silent Way, focusing mostly on the last two avant garde albums but if you're a fan, you'll enjoy it.

Despite Hollis's absence from the public eye, he (as well as Talk Talk) continue to be mentioned in the press, inside Britain and outside, often as an example of an artist who refused to sacrifice his artistic ambition to commercial success and as a yardstick for current artists.
