Just watched this video since I still relate to this issue & I got to say bro, everything you said was straight. up. facts. I've been trying to for a while to get out of this cycle of mind of making music that I'm not that passionate about thinking it would help expand my sound but In reality it's been a watse of my own time due to slowly starting to fit in with those "niche" genres in order to "sound good" like how the underground artists are doing with stuff like Opium, Hyperpop, Digicore, Etc. So I've been wanting to go back to making more Nerdcore music/anime rap music & other music that falls under that umbrella since its my bread & butter, plus the overall topics I have at my disposal to talk about is more relatable to me, but I'm just lost on how I should tackle making music that's good enough as my other peers that do this music since they show authenticity & quality in their stuff that I notice but can't do on the same level as them. My fault for the long read but I just wanted to vent a little bit since I'm looking to hear your thoughts on this as well. (*btw my main style I've accepted works for me is doing both lyrical rap & melodic rap at the same time*)

the long read is fine but the part that you need to really look at is the "making music as good as my peers" because if they have fans etc or have stuff working for them is prolly things outside of just the music because personality, relatability , and aesthetic plays into it just as well as the branding etc... you just have to look at your music and see what could be tweaked to increase quality if you need to up the quality. then far as being authentic just be yourself and i know everyone says that but it tends to take time to show people our "real" selves because we're programmed to think we have to fit an image. you have personal experiences and feelings and perspectives that you could voice and that could connect with fans in your "niche" that's looking for someone to be a voice for me or someone that speaks into what they're going through etc. just gotta be able to express yourself through the music the way you need to vs what others do. Drake is perfect example of how being vulnerable in the music can make you very relatable because his early music was him expressing feelings. and far as doing stuff on the same level as others, you can only play the level of the game you're at right now. I was always taught that you can't compare someone's year 5 to your year 1. then far as others you never know if or who is working with them behind the scenes because the rapper persona is to claim to have done everything by themselves and that's never the case in the music business.
