Cold water shipwrecks are, quite often, some of the best preserved out there. You see this in the Great Lakes, you see it in the Arctic, and you see it in the Antarctic. Although that last one hasn't been well documented, for understandable reasons.
However, we do have one notable wreck. Endurance, the mothership of the Shackleton Expedition. A wreck discovered only two years ago, as of this upload. And a wreck that is in amazing condition, after a century underwater.
...aside from the damage caused by the ice, that is.
Still, Endurance is a time capsule. Not as easy to dive as Erebus or Terror, so one that is less well documented. But certainly still worth looking at, even if we'll probably never see the interior.

Endurance's wreck somehow feels more peaceful, for lack of a better word, than Erebus or Terror. Possibly because her crew all survived despite the loss of the ship.

Yeah I think youre right, I agree that at least part of that peacefulness is knowing that the Endurance crew didn't slowly die off and have to resort to cannibalism. The Franklin expedition has been a fascination of mine since I was a kid. I was super excited when they found Erebus and Terror.

When things get rough for me, I remember Shackleton and the crew of the Endurance. If they can make it, so can we. Thanks for showing us the Endurance. What a noble ship.

I think Endurance holds a special place as a ship. She got her crew where they needed, gave them shelter and held on as long as she could until the ice became to much. Now under the sea, she continues her mission of discovery to today with her current state. She's so well preserved I'd almost call it a shame not to attempt a rasing on her. Although I'm sure the structure would fracture under the strain

That's amazing. The 12 minute mark is truly amazing. The size and thickness of the internal hull planking. For comparison look at the rigging blocks and portholes. I would say the internal planks are 3 to 4 inches thick. The detail is mind blowing even the wood grain can be seen. Today just finding the wood (trees) needed to build such a ship might very well be impossible

Can you imagine being stranded on sea ice in Antarctica, watching your ship get slowly crushed and destroyed? That has to have been a lonely feeling. BTW, the chain on the wheel would be the steering linkage.

Mr Schackleton's leadership is a real and powerful inspiration for me, his determination and resiliency were incredible. I read his books and others about him, he was an amazing leader and had the ability to choose his crew men knowing that he needed tough and proven individuals such as Frank Wild and Tom Crean, and even the Endurance expedition fail it goals Mr. Shackleton returned with the complete crew after a incredible journey.

IMO, the story of the crew of Endurance was one of survival. The real heroes of the Shackleton expedition were the two men that took supplies from the other side of Antarctica to staging points so that Shackleton would survive the planned journey across the continent. With temperatures abnormally low, they knowingly risked - and lost - their lives after successfully delivering the supplies, not knowing that Shackleton never started the Trans-Antarctic journey.

5:26 "Not one man was lost during this expedition." The correct statement is, "Not one member of the crew of the Endurance was lost." There were two units in Shackleton's expedition, those on the Endurance and those who waited for Shackleton at McMurdo Sound, which was his destination. The McMurdo men suffered horribly and several died. Read "Shackleton's Forgotten Men".

@@haywoodjay385 It's a factual error rather than a way of talking. Men were lost during the expedition, just not from Endurance's crew.

Why wasn’t he told there was a war on post (8.16.14) and ordered back home?
@Klyis
@Klyis 3 ай бұрын
He was aware of the war but the British Admiralty gave him the go ahead to continue the mission. At the time most people believed the war would be over by late 1914 or early 1915 so halting a small expedition to Antarctica probably didn't seem like a big deal. And at the very least a successful mission would be a good morale boost for Britain.

The rest of the crew died and they cannibalized each other and I remember this specific fact wasn‘t told in britain after the news came up. Was the ship called Erebus?
