Global IT 'disaster' affects airlines, banks and broadcasters across the world

A global IT outage is affecting major services including airlines, banks, healthcare and broadcasters across the world.
It is believed the meltdown is related to an issue at the software company Microsoft and global cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike - although it is unknown if it is the same problem is affecting airports and train services across the globe.
Here's the latest update:
- A global IT outage has caused massive disruption to various services
- IT security firm CrowdStrike says it has identified the issue and deployed a fix
- This is not a security incident or cyber attack, according to the firm
- Microsoft says a resolution for Windows devices is "forthcoming" and blames a third party after it issued an update
- The UK government says its COBRA emergency team is responding to the outage

I've been using exclusively Linux for a while now & love it. Not a lot of people know much about Linux, but it's honestly ready for mass corporate adoption in critical infrastructure. The open source element makes it extremely secure because of the amount of eyes on the code. It's a lot harder for bad actors to succeed and for bugs to exist when more people are looking at the code.

It's time for companies to switch to Unix/Linux based servers. The fact that Windows is such a poorly designed operating system that it requires a third party driver to protect it, makes it an undesirable platform. CrowdStrike couldn't have tested their roll out, so they are directly to blame. The fact that Windows allowed CrowdStrike to install a defective driver is Microsoft's fault. The lawyers and courts will have to sort out what the damage $ are. I switched to Linux over 15 years ago. Switching has proven to have been a great move on my part.

How come that vital systems at airports or even more so at hospitals are getting updated without proper verification. A controlled system update is the responsibility of industrial consumers. Very irresponsible and amateurish behaviour. Most financial institutions e.g. verify each update before rolling out to individual workstations, but then there is money at risk and not lives as in case of hospitals

These hospitals still use windows 7. Maybe a place like a hospital although not perfect maybe run on their own OS like a custom Unix OS. Planes in the sky are not using XP or windows, they use a customized Unix or Linux computer OS.

​@@Whitemike63 AFAIK, no Windows 7 computers are affected by Crowdstrike update crash. And neither does Windows 8/8.1. Both versions ended support 1.5 years ago and both no longer received updates since then.

@@r.a.6459 Yea I know Windows 7 for example has no updates for a long time. I do see some clinics and not too long ago Im sure I saw a Windows 7 setup still going at a hospital. The original poster is right about testing the updates first with a virtual machine but also the IT guys hired for these businesses are to blame as some of it is human error. Virtual machines or the program that needed that update would be safer on a Unix setup which can be customized. Most the internet runs on Linux/unix servers and if what happened yesterday hit Linux too, then the internet would be blacked out with everything offline. I hope the power companies or other important places are using good IT practices. 1 guy said using sandboxing would have prevented lots of damage also using limited privilege accounts over the default admin is much safer.
