incorrect, Russian economy is being falsely supported by a "war economy" propelled by government spending and which now accounts for 30% of the entire GDP. This can't be sustained. According to Ukrainian sources, Russia's fighting forces in Ukraine numbered 670K at the start of 2024. Now they estimate them at 700K. Despite taking heavy losses, they are replacing their troops faster than the Ukrainians can kill them. Michael Clarke's analysis of the three potential scenarios is thought-provoking, but I wonder if we're overlooking a fourth possibility: a 'frozen conflict' similar to Korea. Under this scenario, we might see a heavily fortified DMZ, but without international peacekeepers - just a mutual deterrence situation. The key difference from his second scenario would be self-enforcement rather than third-party guarantees. This has worked (albeit imperfectly) in Korea for decades. Would love to hear others' thoughts on whether this model could work in Ukraine, considering the different geopolitical contexts. What factors might make it more or less viable than the Korean precedent?
@joephillipson910517 күн бұрын
I don't think this is a possible scenario: russia far outpowers a ukraine (especially a demobillized ukraine), leaving any 'frozen' conflict a easy Russian win to then reheat

Professor Clarke said Ukraine could win, but he has to rely on the Russian economy failing. I comment on that below in my critique of Professor Clarke's summary: Professor Clarke made sure he got in the Russian put downs: they have shown that they can't be trusted and that Ukraine is part of Russian imperial designs etc. No mention, of course, as to why Russia is holding out for no NATO for Ukraine, ever. The head of the Ukrainian military says the situation is tense - which is a euphemism, but apparently according to Professor Clarke Ukraine can still win because Russia's economy might break; one is tempted to say if it was going to break it would have done so by now. No mention of the new missile used once by Russia, the oreshnik, which demonstrated superior Russian missile technology. The North Korean presence was referred to as horizontal escalation although as yet not a single North Korean soldier has been presented to the cameras by the Ukrainian authorities. When talking about horizontal escalation the professor seems to ignore the presence of NATO personnel coming from many countries and "fighting" in one form or another in Ukraine/Kursk. A more forthright discussion might have mentioned Russia's negotiating position, instead, to be provocative, the professor preferred to discuss other regions the Russians might by eyeing up. No proper mention of the Russian view of ATACMS/Stormshadow and Scalp attacks in pre-2014 Russia and the potential dangers they pose. Professor Clarke seems to think that we are no closer to a nuclear war now than we were in 2022; we might have Donald Trump to thank for that. My experience has been that all too often professor Clarke's statements do not stand the test of time.
