After her showing in the 2020 primaries i can't understand how she was even a candidate.

It had to do with campaign finances. Once a sitting president receives the nomination he can only pass the funds raised for his reelection campaign to his running mate, as they are seen as a package deal one can argue the funds were purposed to get them reelected as well. Had Biden stepped out of the race and the DNC (Democratic National Convention) chosen anyone other than Harris the DNC would have been force to refund all the donations they had received for Biden's campaign to the respective donors. Harris was pretty much their default option, they knew they would never be able to rebuild the democrat war-chest in time to field another candidate. My thought is that an alternate reason was that little hands had dipped into the funds as well and having to return the funds shy a few million would have caused a bit of a sandal that the DNC would rather have avoided as well. I have no proof of that, but as an American I know that the only thing dirtier than a politician are the people and financiers that work to get them elected. These campaigns rake in BILLIONS, and no one ever really questions where all that money goes until the election rules say it must be accounted for in a situation like the candidate dropping out.

Sad thing is both Hawaii AND the liberal Ashville area of North Carolina still voted overwhelmingly democrat, even after the Biden administration's utter abandonment of them.
