The Australian's Gerard Henderson says for a decade there has been a "media pile on led by the ABC" against the exonerated Cardinal George Pell.
Mr Henderson spoke of the Jury trial which convicted Cardinal Pell on sexual abuse charges, and said in such a circumstance where the media pile on skewed in one such way it was "very difficult to imagine how anyone would have got a fair trial".
"Led by Victoria Police, in cooperation with the ABC, the whole web of media pile on against George Pell went on for years".
Mr Henderson told Sky News host Andrew Bolt, at every path where it got to the end, the ABC's pile on and arguments against Pell, "either the DPP in has withdrawn it, her magistrate has not proceeded with it, or the High Court overturned it".
Mr Bolt proceeded to call out all the media personalities who were "really dominant on the Pell pile on," including but not exclusively those from ABC who as the national broadcaster have "acted absolutely shamefully on this," he said.

The fact Pell was initially tried, convicted and appealed in Victoria was probably significant. He was exonerated unanimously the moment the case went outside.

@ yeah. It's amazing how polarised the world has become. Either you're a leftist trans-loving snowflake or on the right side. How about a logical person who knows how to read and think for themselves? Both sides think they know my entire philosophical and political mind based on 20 word comments. The fact that people genuinely think they know how you feel about the entire world based on a single "discussion" is a very worrying sign to me. That story about the details of abuse came out and l was furious that a priest's lawyer could somehow justify sexual abuse on a sliding scale. "But your honour, my client merely placed his penis in the vicinity of the plaintiff's tonsils. It's hardly a good buggering..."

Not a catholic, not religious at all and my personal view is that the Catholic Church is likely guilty of many such cases but I cannot for the life of me understand how he was ever convicted in the first place. If anyone took the time to read the AVAILABLE details on this case you could NEVER arrive at a guilty verdict.

There have been numerous Australian priests who have been convicted of sex crimes with minors. But no empirical data exists that suggests that Catholic clerics sexually abuse minors at a level higher than clerics from other religious traditions or from other groups of men who have ready access and power over children (e.g., school teachers, coaches). www.psychologytoday.com/ca/blog/do-the-right-thing/201808/separating-facts-about-clergy-abuse-fiction When a priest confesses to underage offences, the media will call for more 'victims' and even suggest rewards of compensation. There are generally a number of substance abusers who are prepared to jump-on-the-compensation-bandwagon. When fake victims come forward, the MSM supports these false accusers wholeheartedly. With no apologies given when if the fakes are exposed. So why is the MSM so against the Catholic Church? View the video, *'HOW THE MEDIA FAKES THE NEWS' - www.realjewnews.com/?p=1239

@@theknowall2232 "other groups of men who have ready access and power over children (e.g., school teachers, coaches)" < actually the difference is insane. If you look at US dept of education statistics the avg. yearly abuse by the public school employees is almost 30,000 meanwhile with the Catholic priests it's less than 250. That's the difference, tens of thousands, it's not even in the same league, yet we only hear about one in the media and not even the greater one. @@ecclesiaxxi6210 Yes, when the media owners have a political aim to target a well known individual they have much weaponry. The alleged abuse victim accusing Pell is after money. He claimed the old, _"... so I turned to substance abuse"_ routine as part of his victim impact statement to get more compensation. In fact this accuser knew how to play the system. He is *primarily* a substance abuser. Many substance abusers learn to make child abuse claims in order to jump the queue into free government rehab programs. Counsellors always ask the substance abuser to think about why they initially started their drug/alcohol abuse. (Statistically the most common reason is boredom). The substance abuser is then asked to write down their ideas about this. Boredom is not a good excuse to give a counsellor. So the substance abuser needs a false excuse for starting their drug/alcohol habit. Abuse is an excellent excuse and they learn this from each other. AND YES, government counsellors ask the so-called 'abuse victim' to keep a diary on their thoughts as part of the process. So the only 'diary writing' happens in rehab. After decades of substance abuse (and *diary writing* in rehab) false victims have varying levels of cognitive impairment, some lose touch with reality and start to believe their own lies of child abuse. The compensation lawyers know all about it. The elites who own the controlled mainstream media can use these drug addicts as part of their agenda. They know how it works, call for more 'victims' in the news and many come forward. Sometimes hundreds, they weed out the ridiculous, people who never met or even know the accused, and settle for one or two that actually have circumstances where they attended the same church as the accused.

I agree that we must respect the court decision. But Bolt and Henderson are wrong when they say that Pell is innocent, because thats not what the High Court said. The jury should have considered that based on some of the testimony presented that he MAY have been innocent. The bar for conviction and meeting the beyond reasonable doubt is very high, and in cases of historical sexual abuse is almost impossible to meet. Why? Because its a personal crime with no witnesses and is about power and control. Figures show that less than 1% of cases result in a conviction. Dont forget that Pell's appeal was on leagl proceedural grounds, not on his innocence or guilt. Then you have to consider all of the other alleged victims that have come forward. By my count there are 16. Thats 16 different people from different places all with stories that show a similar pattern of offending. At what number do you start to think that there might be something going on? 2? 5? 10? 16? Just how many does it take? And dont forget the final royal commission reports, which are not opinions, but findings of fact. At present most of the ones about Pell are redacted but there was a part of the Ballarat one that was not. It states that the consulters of Bishop Mulkerans knew of and covered up the offences to protect the reputation of the church. Pell was one of those, and was in charge of the catholic education for the diocese, which covers nearly half the state. That means that not only did he know of the offending, he knew who the offenders were, he helped move the offenders to other parishes, he never notitifed police (and it was always a crime to rape a child), he never informed parents and he never helped the children. To make matters worse, he knew many of the families because he grew up with them, and they attended mass with him celebrating it. What sort of a person knows that children are being raped, yet his only action is to protect the offenders? And to think that he was a priest who was telling others the moral code to follow. Only 2 people know what happened , Pell and Victim J. I have no idea, and I accept the High Court decision that the prosecution did nto meet the required proof. But based on the royal commission finding as well as all of those others who have come forward, on the balance of probabilities, I think that Pell is not the upstanding person that Bolt and others think he is. I think he may well have abused children as well as protected others who did the same. Now dont get me wrong, he is a man who has done some great things, but that doesnt mean that he also cant do bad things. Plenty of good people can do bad things. Bolt is also wrong when he speaks of false memories and people looking for money. The royal commission dealt with both of these myths.Victims know who abused them. The false memory thing was disproved years ago and doesn not happen. And false claims are extremely rare. The money is pathetic and takes years to claim, and you would need to show a history of effects from mental health professionals etc. Far easier to fall over in a supermarket and get 20 times more! The other victims had cases that werent as strong because of the effects that the abuse has had on their lives. Most are broken, with a history of mental health issues, broken relationships, even trouble with authority. Sadly these are all common with child sex abuse victims, but in court the victims are effectively put of trail, and their past compared to the offenders. In a he said, she said situation, power and staus always win. Then there is the thing that everyone forgets. There are estimates I have heard that Pell spent between 6 and 10 million dollars on legal fees. There is no possible way that came from donations. I think that the Vatican had a lot to lose if he stayed in jail. It would have shown that the child sex abuse scandel went right to the top, and they would have had to take action. Nobody else in the nation could have afforded to pay fees like this. Its a lot easier to find a legal proceedure that wanst right when you have the best legal minds in the country working on it.

I was working, nursing, at St.John of God Hospital in Brighton in the early 1990's when my young, male colleague took a relative,Gerald Ridsdale, to court re allegations of childhood sexual abuse. Pell,a long-time family friend, pressured my colleague not to do this and tried everything to hush it up. He accompanied Ridsdale to court and publically supported him in every way. Anyways, the rest is history; the infamous Ridsdale went to jail and my colleague had a "nervous breakdown". Fortunately he was ok in the long-term and went on to expose many of the widespread cover-ups so rampant in the hierarchy of the Catholic Church for many years. I'm a Catholic and to see a man of Pell's stature and power knowingly participate in this heinous suppression of the truth was absolutely shocking to me. I'm not sure about his guilt or innocence of the recent charges levelled against him but the memory of Pell's appalling behaviour back in the day has never left me; and never will.

Who says hes innocent??? Just because hes been let go, doesn't mean he didn't do it. Think about the life sentence his victims are living. No one accuses someone high up, puts themselves through the hell of embarrassment and scrutiny for years, if it was a lie. Have you forgotten the victim who suicided? How do you think it was for these victims who displayed so much courage even speaking out about it, let alone putting themselves through the whole journey of police and courts. Especially, back in the era that this occurred-people just didn't speak out, because they weren't believed. Who would do such a thing right??? A high up person in religion or whatever their position of power, think they can get away with it. Well... he has. This is a sad and disappointing day for these victims and many others, fighting to be heard and believed. This is very sad. To those victims, stay strong, it could only be a matter of time, before someone else is brave enough, or angry enough to come forward. I personally, do not believe that this didn't happen. Think of the victims people-what do they have to gain holding onto a lie all these years? Come on.

May be the Church or Pell could file a case for Wrongful imprisonment. If the Government is hot on prosecuting the Church then the Church shoul return the favor and also file case. The Government will think twice in doing the same sloppy investigative work. This shouldn’t have gone to trial back in the beginning.

I don't think Pell or the Catholic Church will sue. For all of the mistakes the Church may be guilty of the upper echelon including Pell are above that. I am not sure about the law in this regard, but the High Court should if it could, put all costs to the prosecution. Cleary this man was not guilty, and the charges should never have been laid. Why should a clearly innocent man, have to talk out millions if dollars to defend himself against frivolous charges? There was never enough evidence. And if we look. elsewhere, we can see that there was an understanding by the family of witness J, that J was indeed assaulted by a priest elsewhere, before any of this came about. A priest that left Australia to return to his home country and has since died. Now if THAT is true, that should be thouroghly examined also because if it is true, then this whole thing has been a disgraceful conspiracy. IF it is true. I have heard it from three different people during interviews. Apparently upstanding and they only said it to try and make some logical sense about how this MAY happened. It probably won't be investigated along the lines that the victim, may be put under even more stress and hurt. If he is a victim. Before I heard any of that, it has been clear to me that this man must have been assaulted by someone somewhere, at some time. Easy to plant ideas into such a person. He could at least get some form of peace and justice from it.

I'm sure he's guilty of a lot of other things, but the evidence against Pell in this case was ludicrously tenuous. How can you mount a prosecution case on the basis of that evidence I don't know, but the fact that Pell was convicted as a symbol and as a reflection of the times completely goes against the idea of justice, of evidence beyond reasonable doubt, and moreover, of an individual's innocence until proven guilty.
