When this footage was taken in the Summer of '77, there was NO ONE that could match the intensity of this band. I remember this time oh so well. Watching the guitar soloing between Allen and Steve, then later with Gary, brings a chill up my spine and a tear to my eyes. Ronnie Van Zant was an American Icon- one of the best frontmen to have ever graced a stage- bare feet and all. No one can replace him or these musicians. Those who play as a tribute band today using their name are but a shadow of the real thing. Rock on proud bird!

It's 2024...I think they we're hitting a huge peak is style music lyrics and just powerful killer solos... This song has it all... Unbelievable what happened to these band members... I heard they ran out of fuel? How does that happen? Check the damn gauges and make sure it's full .. The pilot must have been stoned or whoever he trusted was stoned and didn't do it.. It could have been a huge miscommunication... Cost lives and tragedy and put every band member on another trajectory cut everyone's life short.

@CoalMiner3794 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more, he is the one the molded that southern rock solo sound long before anyone ever thought of it. Gary is a guitar God in my opinion, if met him several times through meet and greets and hes the exact same man everytime, so humble and appreciative of his fans and never goes without mentioning how he wouldnt be who he is or where he is had it not been for his fallen freebird brothers and sisters. It's truly a shame people bash Gary for keeping on touring when he has all rights to do so, he was a original founding member and his never left the band so he should have all the right in the world to keep his and his brothers music alive until hes ready to retire. Gary Rossington is the main reason I picked up a guitar and learned to play. Which I'm nowhere near close to as good as Gary but I give it my all lol. I know that know one will believe this, but this intro was a question in a classroom one morning. It was a fill in the blank verbally asked and open to the whole class. . Whiskey bottles and brand new cars _____________? Everyone just had a blank look on their face.. .....me somewhat hung over, after a pause of silence said: ..oak tree, you're in my way. Everyone except the teacher was even more dumb founded. He said; John gets a Gold Star for that one today... Still, everyone else was speechless and dumb founded...?? Now you're likely wondering; What subject of class would this be..?? ...Sunday school. Even I don't know how it fit in other to say that it just happen to be a flash back in the teacher's mind.. Or maybe the Spirit was calling me out for having been partying into the early morning hours not so many hours prior..??

This song has a lot of meaning for me... Especially the line "oak tree you're in my way...." In a chemical haze I nodded out and hit a tree head on... Luckily I'm alive to tell the story but I shattered my leg in a hundred pieces. I've had multiple surgeries and I'm still healing after 4 months. Thankfully I didn't hurt anyone else. If anyone is listening - please Don't drink or do drugs and drive. You might get away with it for a while but eventually it will catch up with you.

I love how Gary leads off the song by first lead, then as the next lead comes he backs up looks towards Steve, and apparently gives Steve the nod to go ahead to take the lead, such beautiful cooperation they head as three lead guitar players, no jealousy, or hostile competician just pure smooth easy unity with the three of them loving and respecting each others talent and place in the band, such a great view of talent.

The addition of Stevie Gaines to the band meant the band was about to explode. Three different lead guitars with complementary styles. Ronnie was just the genius to meld them together into that great final album. The plane crash was the worst news in the history of rock and roll. There is no comparison.

The irony - the song was about the only one original member who is still alive (as of 2019). And thankfully so. We are watching people perform who have only 3 more months to live having no idea the legacy they would leave in terms of music, family, and fans. They created something truly unique before some of them even knew how to play their instruments. This video shows the power of friendship, love, and dedication to your craft. Oh.....and Jim Beam. :)
