“The exception that proves the rule” is a phrase for when there’s only ever been one example outside of the rule. If all that anyone can ever point to is this one example, then that by itself proves the rule because it’s only happened once. For example, if there’s only been one pink orange in all of history, that’s the exception that proves the rule. If there is more than one exception, then that calls the rule into question.

How does an exception prove the rule, though? An exception implies that it is exempt from the rule. An exception would disprove the rule that all oranges are orange. If pink orange is an exception, then the rule can't be that there is one pink orange. If you said that the rule is not all oranges are orange, a pink orange wouldn't be an exception because it is already a part of the rule! I think you have the saying right but it is bad phrasing. It only makes sense if you said "pink orange is the exception that DISPROVES the rule".

If something has only ever had one exception, then the rule holds because you can reasonably expect there to never be another. If only one pink orange has been found in all of human history, compared to millions or even billions of orange oranges, then the exception proves the rule. “All oranges are orange, barring this one very bizarre exception.” It’s stupid to instead say that not all oranges are orange simply because one orange was pink, because to say that implies that there can be blue or red or green or brown oranges as well as that one pink orange, which we’ve already agreed is not the case. It’s the same thing, for example, if I say that gravity means things fall down when dropped. If a freak accident of quantum physics suddenly makes a dropped ball rocket Bethesda-style into the sky, you don’t amend your statement that “Sometimes things fall when they’re dropped.” You say that things fall when they’re dropped, barring a one-in-a-quadrillion freak chance.

Inigo didn't set off the bear trap because he has the Sneak perk that prevents setting off traps (Light Step or Light Foot or whatever it is in Skyrim).

"The exception proves the rule" is based on an archaic meaning of prove closer to test. A Bullet Proofed suit of armor was a suit of armor that had the mark of being shot with bullet to show it could survive

I remember discussing this "exception proves the rule" stuff with a mate a while ago, and we came to the conclusion that explicit exceptions prove implicit rules, for example if you are told that you don't need to wear a tie at your workplace on fridays, then it implies that you have to on all other days

Dear Skyrim mod makers: Make a mod that kicks off with a courier needing to deliver something to the player. Courier comes dressed in a strange skin tight blue suit with a strange device attached to his left arm and a giant yellow "21" on the back to deliver a message to the player. Player can choose to kill the courier if they feel like being evil and this is where the mod REALLY kicks in. Player turns around and bumps into another courier in a skin tight blue suit with a letter and gold for the player- the previous courier left inheritance to the player. Player gets annoyed and kills the 2nd courier. Player goes to leave and is greeted by ANOTHER courier in a skin tight blue suit with a letter and some gold. The previous courier left inheritance to the player. This continues for a set amount time, depleting the player's arrow and soul gem supply recharging their weapons if left to continue for a long enough time. There may, or may not, be a bounty on the player's head for all the bodies that are piled up on the ground. Have the mod have a menu to set the amount of time the player keeps running into couriers

One of the weird things about autism is that you'll notice obvious signs of autistic behaviour and traits in others, even though you're often unaware when you show them yourself. Having only one exception reinforces the idea that a rule is in place. And no, my brain won't accept that answer either. But hey.

It works better the other way around. "As a rule, this is what you can expect from X. But be aware that there will be one/some exceptions to this." For example: As a rule all pistols fire bullets. However, the Gyrojet and tranquilizer pistols that fire darts are excetions to this rule.

I no longer remember the source, but I was taught in English Language at school that “The exception that proves the rule.” is a mistranslation of a Latin saying into english. The Romans used to say “The exception that TESTS the rule.” The implication being that no Rule is absolute/ perfect and will always be tested by exceptions. But it was mistranslated, and people who understood the original meaning by word of mouth mostly died, and consequently the argument we have just witnessed has been going on for 100’s of years 😂

While it seems books are very cheap in skyrim for some reason arguably the most valuable things in that fort would be the books in real life. Books were fucking expensive. A bandit would want to sell them not burn them and thats exactly what they did in real life.

I think hagravens are ugly because of a blessing from one of their pantheon's gods. Now not all Reachmen worship the same beings the same way, but some of the clans around Markarth do have a sort of give and take relationship with Daedra. One of the Daedra they deal with is Namira. Namira likes making things ugly. So if you make a deal with Namiria to become powerful, the downside is you're now an ugly bird woman. Trying to change that would break the contract with Namira. Not all the Reachwomen are making deals with Namira to become hagravens. In fact some of them are even actively working against Namira by making things look pretty. Planting flowers, new trees over fallen ones, and even kidnapping the sybil of Dibella, goddess of beauty, to possibly try and gain her favor. Her sybil is an ethnic Reachgirl after all.
