Since the fist time I saw this item in the game, I was waiting for someone to do this. And not just a fake cosplay prop but an actual playable instrument. So happy to finally see it happen. I also love the fact that most of it was done with hand tools. Truly an awesome build!

I would reccomend tuning it G D A F C E as that is the traditional 6 course lute tuning (though of course traditional lutes have courses). Tuning it thusly would be more representative of Skyrims era. It would be interesting if you strung it with gut strings, that may effect the loudness. This has been a really cool build, and I'd love you to make it again and try to tweak Skyrims design into something more practical.

I would recommend a piezoelectric disc mounted under the bridge with a plug and a preamp coming out of the soundhole, that way it wouldnt be intrusive for looks because almost all the guts could be removed easily and you could record the instrument easier. Also ditch the titebond 3 it may be water resistant but it leaves a nasty gray glue line, titebond 2 FTW, good job Btw i look for ward to more of your projects.

This looks like an insanely daunting build! I'd love to have a playable version for a costume but it seems pretty unreasonable as I've only ever made a hot plate in grade 4 woodworking and I can't fathom using any other material... but if I'm even able to make a prop I can use your build for reference of scale and possibly similar techniques. This was very fun to watch and it looks perfect
@alexdiamond39876 жыл бұрын
Can you let malukah borrow that for one of her songs?
@TomChiiron2 жыл бұрын
YES as long as she only uses it as a prop and not actually records on it (it’s sounds baaad :/ )

What a great and intoxicating work! Look, this guy showed how to make a musical instrument so complex shapes without the rigmarole of a type of milling cutter, spray gun and band saw machine. Such hard work is worthy of the best praise. P.S: Each, on fact, you very helped me with building my own guitar. Having seen this trick with a hacksaw and curved forms with the help of cuts I realized how I can cope with the task performed either for days with a jig saw in your hands, or with a hand milling cutter. Good luck in the development of the channel and all the best, bard-carpenter! May the blessing of Talos come with you. I can't believe such a man has so few subscribers. P.S.S: Viarmo appreciated your work and is ready to accept you to the bard College.

There is actually 8 strings on a lute in skyrim.
@TomChiiron2 жыл бұрын
Haha, you’re right! I can’t make or play anything else then a 6 string guitar or 4 string bass. And I tried to work around this by the theory I talked about at the end of the video (sorry if I was unclear): In the quest where you search for “Finns lute” they say that he actually created the 8 string lute. So there could be version before that, and they could have 6 strings. Hope this clears it up!

Very Interesting, and Thank You for Making this Wonderful Piece. Glad to fine this video, I was wondering if anyone had actually made the instrument. It seems your the only one, thank you. Is there any lore-based reason for making the strings sound a certain way? Do we know of the original lute/harp/guitar that may have been used as a facade in the audio?
@TomChiiron2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! Hmm.. I’m a little confused as to what audio you mean, so I’m giving a few answers, tell me if they’re not the ones! -the lute sound from Skyrim is actually played on a regular acoustic guitar -the background music during the build in my videos is also made with a acoustic guitar. -and the Dragonborn comes song at the end of this video is recorded with the lute I built (as you can tell by the horrible sound, hahah).

I thought the Skyrim lute has eight strings
@TomChiiron2 жыл бұрын
Correct! I chose to only have 6 because that’s what I know how to make and play. I talked about it in the end, but I’m the quest for searching for “Finns lute” they say that Finn was the inventor of the 8 string. Therefor my theory is that there might be version before that, and one might have 6 strings.
@captaincrab28626 жыл бұрын
Only complaint the one in skyrim is eight stringed not 6 but besides that NOICE!!!
@TomChiiron2 жыл бұрын
Hahah, yes sorry about it being 6 strings. I explained it in the end (altho maybe a little unclear) that I have a theory: in the quest to find “Finns Lute” they say that Finn created the 8 string lute. Therefore it could be version before that have 6 strings. So, cause I can’t make or play anything else, I chose to make it have 6 strings. ASLO THANK YOU!

@xezerik622 жыл бұрын
Its supposed to have 8 strings
@TomChiiron2 жыл бұрын
Yes, completely correct! Sorry if I was unclear with my thoughts at the end, but I talked about the quest line where you search for “Finns lute”. They say that Finn was the creator of the “8 string lute”, which could mean that there was version before that, and one of them might have had 6 strings. Combine that theory with the fact that I can’t play or make an 8 string instrument. I choose to make it have 6 strings and tune it to a regular classic acoustic guitar. Hope this cleared it up!
@xezerik622 жыл бұрын
@@TomChiiron but they make 8 string guitars you could have based it off of something like that or made it more like a mandolin
@TomChiiron2 жыл бұрын
@@xezerik62 Absolutely! But, I can’t play a mandolin and the extra two strings on a guitar I would have no idea what to do with. And also, a 6 string guitar is something I know how to build. Having to build an instrument I’ve never built before and at the same time building something that there is no blue prints on, yet exists, would have resulted in the end product being worse then what it actually is. Yes, I can gain new knowledge, learn better skills and buy more tools. But I also have to know my limits at times.
@treyhughes32833 жыл бұрын
But the skyrim lute is 8 strings
@TomChiiron2 жыл бұрын
Yeah! I talk about that in the end, sorry if I was unclear! The quest line that makes you search for “Finns lute” says that Finn created the first 8 string lute. That implies that there might be versions before that, and they might have 6 strings. I choose to go with this theory backseat I can’t play or make an 8 string instrument (that is why it’s also tuned as a classical guitar!)
