You do the setup the same way that I've been doing it since almost when I started to use and love Floyd Rose systems (licence, special, etc.). There are a few points/tips that I have to mention: · All the setups that I do, even tho it's a little bit, just a little bit more difficult, I do it in playing position. I've noticed that gravity and neck-rest thingy affects the intonation, string height and pickup height. You to the setup in certain position but when you sit or stand up and put your guitar in playing position, it changes. · The wood block can be customize with any piece of wood, a saw and some sandpaper. I have one for two guitars that I have (sand paper two faces of the block). · Before intonation, by the way you did a fantastic job mention how to do it properly and with the correct tools,I advise to first take the old strings, clean the guitar, put the new strings, tune it to pitch, check the relief of the neck, check the pickups height and then the intonation. · When putting new strings, release the springs just a little bit, lock the bridge by putting some thin enough pieces of wood underneath the base plate of the bridge but just to lock the strings and putting some tension on them, because it is a struggle to move the bridge with the tremolo bar every time you put and string and lock it due springs tension, specially for beginners on this. Everything else, OH MAN! You are on point :) Greetings from Mexico.

Spring tension is the simplest part. I've had my first floyd guitar for a week and I've got it down, tune to whatever you play in after you have your action intonation amd neck relief set then tighten or loosen the springs to where the bridge is parallel to the body while being in tune. It's really simple guys.
@Hypersp4ce
@Hypersp4ce Ай бұрын
@@Ayyem93 You do neck relief first, then the action. But I'd set up the springs before intonating. You don't want to have the bridge at a different angle or height before finishing the intonation, That's just how I'd do it but your method would end up working too. I really agree with you about the spring tension being quite simple. I'm pretty sure I figured it out on my own like 20 years ago when I barely knew what I was doing haha

If you are tuning the guitar laying flat, it is going to be out of tune when you have it in playing position due to gravity.

I bought a new Ibanez with a double locking trem, followed your instructions (with my own makeshift block) and got it set up perfectly. Thanks!! I'll be buying a proper block for my guitool box. Well glad to have you back on the dark side, I feel the pain but I never sold my guitar, my jem jr is now 8 months old I started playing 10 months ago. After buying my jem jr it’s been a massive pain in the ass. It’s been “professionally set up” twice. After the last time a few days ago I thought everything was good, it wasn’t until the next day the intonation was off again. Replaced the strings, adjusted the truss rod, adjusted pickup height and action height of the strings and had to take apart the internals and found springs stuck under the pickups not even on the screw posts to raise the pickups. The pickups aren’t level still, can’t tell if the guitar needs a little chipping away in that specific cavity or if it’s caused by the faceplate. What I do Know is that with them basically all flat against the guitar it’s fixed a lot of shitty sounds like the G string sounding like a damn banjo. Idk why or how I’ve put up with this when I’ve got 2 guitars that are way brighter quality but just suck to play because they don’t feel good in my hands. The schecter is close to my Ibanez but the neck is slightly thicker, but the main issue is that I drop tuned it and all the songs the app uses are drop d or eb. Probably for the best. It’s way easier coming up with Melodie’s and rhythm with my drop tuned guitar. Just feels so natural, my gretsch just weighs a lot and makes me not wanna touch it either. My fender acoustic I only use for recording specific parts but I hate that fender or any fender for that matter. Every fender thing I own is broken except the acoustic. But I just don’t enjoy acoustic playing. The sounds are lovely but it lacks everything I enjoy about guitar.

I don't even bother blocking up my Floyd Rose when tuning. I just put the strings on and tighten them to similar tension until the Floyd Rose is parallel with the body, which is where it should be if setup properly. Start tuning: some strings will be sharp, others flat...just do a "slop" tune to get them close. If the tension on your claw is correct, you should now be fairly close on the tuning....this will avoid that never ending see saw you speak of. Now you can fin tune it like you would any guitar. Of course as the strings stretch and snug up around the tuning machines, you'll have to do this a couple times...but that's the same with any guitar.

Isn't that basic standard string changing procedure? Do one at a time, tune to pitch, stretch it and retune till it stays in, then move on to the next string
@ivankrushensky
@ivankrushensky 4 жыл бұрын
@@stilllifewithguitar184 Most people's problem with the Floyd Rose is that they have to tune, retune, retune again...forever until the bridge is balanced. And I don't even do one string at a time. I take them all off at once and put all of the new ones on. The tricky part (if you haven't used a Floyd Rose) is that you have to tighten all of the strings evenly until the bridge is floating parallel to the body BEFORE you bother tuning it, to avoid that never ending tuning cycle. Also, if you change tuning or string gauge, you will also need to adjust the claw. Which should be true for any tremolo, but the outcome is much more severe if you don't adjust the claw in a Floyd Rose. None of this applies to a stop tail piece. So I would say no, it is not that same as any string changing procedure. Which is why most people get fed up and think their Floyd Rose is broken or crappy...which it is not. It is by far the most reliable tremolo I have ever used, when used properly.

@@ivankrushensky you are completely wrong. You didn't watch the video did you? You are doing it extremely inefficiently. Tuning string "close" to balance the trem is the whole problem. 1. Block the trem. 2. Replace and Tune all 6 to pitch. 3. Stretch strings. 4. Tune all 6 again. 5. Lock both ends, bridge and nut. 6. Un-block the trem. 7. Screw claw in until tuning comes back to pitch. 8. DONE. Any other way is less efficient. And guessing.

I must give you higher marks for depth of instruction and production value of your video. Besides being mesmerized by that cool tuner, why did you tune/intonate with the old strings, get rid of them, then start again with new strings?
@SkyscraperGuitars

I always "rough in" the setup with old strings if I can. That way I know if everything works before I blow a new set of strings. Also, I can play the guitar after the adjustments and see if there is a high fret or something else that will need repair. If I changed the strings first, then I'd have to throw them away if I had to take them off for a fret repair... I usually rough in, then change strings, then let the guitar sit for a day or two, then go back through everything and make sure it's still happy. I hope that answers your question!

Depending on the string set, there is a bit of a tilt from bass to treble to get the correct string action. It's usually a pretty small amount. If you set the bass E to 5/64" above the 12th fret and the treble E to 4/64", your bridge will be slightly out of level, but not much... As for the trem setter, I don't have a bunch of experience with those. I try to keep the guitars as stock as possible.

@SkyscraperGuitars
@SkyscraperGuitars Жыл бұрын
If your bridge is returning flat or sharp, there are a few things that can cause it. The most common is a knife edge or post that has a burr. The metal on both pieces should be VERY smooth. A lot of the licensed Floyds use posts and knife edges that are not hardened. They can develop burrs through normal use or if you raise/lower the bridge with string or spring tension present. The second most popular reason is springs that are worn out or that aren't seated well. Lastly, old strings can cause this issue. There are other small things that can be a culprit, but are pretty rare. Burrs on the saddles, locking nut wear and loose / wiggly claw screws.

Twist is a BOOGER to deal with. Most guys will replace twisted necks. Randy Shartiger and Dave's World of Fun Stuff both have videos on taking out twist. I use a heating blanket and it's 50/50 at best... Probably more like 20/80 if I'm being honest.

Protip for tuning floyd rose guitars so that you don't have to re-tune your entire stringset every damn string: Tune in this order: String 3 - 4 - 2 - 5 - 1 - 6 where 1 is the high string and 6 the low string. (while stringing indeed block and tune up) Legit I bought a "the key" while waiting on my new guitar with floyd. Thinking OMG IT'S GONNA SAVE MY LIFE. I tried it once, decided it's easier to just detune the string, move the saddle and re-tune. Also, the screw in my ibanez rg320 just came out because that DID strip the wood (someone put a stupid strong spring in I noticed after, was trying to set up the bridge....) Edit: You mean people cut guitar strings that are still tuned? 👀 dafuq. My guitars are out of their cases too btw. I always start on my les paul and swap to my setius after half an hour.

My dean requires three but in straight-line not V formation with the middle one not doing anything. I tried using two on my Dean and it didn't like it but my Strat loves two and my Wolfgang loves having just two, Eddie understood this I didn't have to remove the center spring because Eddie didn't put a center spring in but he did use the V formation

Lmao, thank you man. I bought the tool months ago when I started playing, I watched a video but forgot everything. I was trying to figure it out last night and I gave up xD. I spent 5 hours fixing every issue after paying a professional to set up the guitar twice. It’s a jem jr yes I know it’s not a true jem but it feels perfect and now that I’ve sank my time into fixing it properly it’s sounding so much more proper. The only issue I’m currently having since I knocked everything else off the list was intonation, it’s a bit flat on the bottom and a bit sharp at the top. I started playing for the love of god by Steve vai and I noticed that my sound was pretty far off from what it should be. I raised the action a little more and had to put all the pickups down flat. It’s the only way, the guitar is definitely a bit fucked but over the past 8 months she’s almost fully fixed. I wouldn’t suggest a jem jr unless your willing to take on a heavy task that may or may not be done when you get the guitar. I know it’s not the guitar tech being a moron, he set up my schecter diamond series hellraiser c-1 fr and it’s all proper and perfect. The pickups in my jem had springs for the screws not even attached, just held to the underside of the pickup by the magnet. The pickups were also angled forward and backwards and the tech never fixed it. All I can say is if you have the time do it yourself, take your time. Doesn’t matter if you know anything about it or not. Watch videos as your doing one specific thing and maybe 5 hours maybe less or more and you’ll have it set up. Also for the springs, it depends on the player and the guitar. Sometimes you need a bit more tension in the middle rather than the sides. My schecter needed them slanted and only 2. The third one was causing an issue and 2 let it return back to neutral where before it would stay sharp or flat depending on which way you pressed the whammy bar. I went and just watched a 40 minute video of Steve vais guitar tech to get the setup close to his so I could make adjustments as needed. Made all the difference.

Cool video, but you never measure neck relief with the neck in a cradle. I mean, you demonstrated how much the neck moves just pushing down in the headstock. Same principle applies. The neck will bow slightly when the neck is in a cradle. Always measure neck relief with the guitar in playing position!!

@@SkyscraperGuitars Thanks for replying man. I have been working on an album and have been having such horrible tuning issues...originally i played with a 10-52 set and had problems with the top 3 strings especially the g not wanting to ever sound or stay in tune so I switched to a 56-44-32 -22p-15-11 set and they stay in tune better but now i am having problems with the bottom 3 strings. I know how to set up a guitar or at least have a fair understanding on the subject. I have the relief set and the action exactly where i like it but i am still having issues. I am not able to get the saddle back far enough on the 56 so it shows up slightly sharp at the 12th. According to my tuner everything else is intonated but seems like it either falls back out of tune after 2 minutes or its just not in tune with its self. When i go to play say a d5 at the 5th and 7th frets it never sounds in tune but shows that the strings are indeed in tune at the open and the 12th. I even have the floyd perfectly balanced but there is still something going on. I have been using a snark is it just not accurate enough?

@@andrewsanchez4988 I've got a few thoughts for you... First, I would highly recommend getting a Peterson stroboplus. They are about $130. They have sweetened tuning settings for 7 string. If you are heavy handed like me, your low notes will always be sharp at attack, then flatten out. This is WAY worse on open strings than fretted notes. Sometimes you just have to drop a few cents (3-10 depending on how hard you hit.). If you drop the tuning a bit, you need to be quick on your muting... Its a compromise, but that's just how it works. When I talked to Frampton's tech last summer he showed me his list of tuning offsets for open note songs, so even the big boys do this. For the saddle that won't go far enough back... You may have to file where the string sits or file the back of the saddle to allow more clearance. You've got to have good intonation at 1 and 12. Worst case, you may have to move the bridge posts back... That's a ton of work, but you need to have the intonation set right or it will drive you nuts. Lastly, just hitting the lowest strings can pull the whole guitar slightly sharp because the FR floats. A light touch will go a long way. If you play hard and light isn't an option, you can put 5 springs on the Trem. Since springs are more stretchy in the middle of their travel, they are actually stiffer right as they start through their range of motion. If you put 5 springs on, your claw will have to be adjusted WAY out. This will keep your trem stiffer when at rest. That will help the whole guitar play in tune. Not by much, but it may be enough to get you sounding right. If I had your guitar on my bench, I would be swapping a handful of parts out to see what combination plays the best. There's no magic answer, just a handful of things that you can try to make everything a bit sweeter. Lastly, you might try a few different brands of strings. I have had bad luck with a few manufacturers on FR guitars. I won't put slinkys on a floating trem. I love them on hard tails though. You might call string joy and tell them what is going on. They may be able to put a custom set together for you. A wound vs unwound 3rd might be a game changer... I don't know. Good luck!!! -Greg

@@SkyscraperGuitars Thanks dude i really appreciate it....i think its just time to get something new... Ive been really really wanting one of Ola Englands solar guitars wheb ever i can afford the 800 bux lol.. I think i have grown out of the floyd rose phase tho I got this guitar as a graduation present over 10 years ago and back then i had such a hard on for floyd rose equipped guitars and players like Synyster gates and Dimebag. I have only used it once on this album for some cool effects on a song. I really do play with a heavy hand though because the emgh4s i have just beg to be played hard cause they really get that tight bite that i havent been able to find with other passive pickups without just being flooded with low end. I will have to look into a stroboplus. In the mean time do you think blocking the bridge would help? I just finished guitars and drums for another song today only to find out while laying down bass tracks that everything is about 3 cents sharp. Again tho dude i really appreciate the help if you have a patreon i would love to become a patron.

Hey, I have a question for you, I bought a used floyd that was previously tuned to e flat but had obviously not been tuned in a while and the frets were buzzing but with the amp it was fine so i figured it would be a minor adjustment/tune it. I got it home and got it all tuned up (properly) and it is still buzzing on all of the frets and all of the strings. It looks to have enough relief and the bridge is level. I have not replaced the strings. Is it the truss rod, the nut, or the bridge that is causing this ? Sorry for all the detail

@metalheadmusician6941 5 жыл бұрын
I also tuned it back to e flat, the previous tuning, by the way
@SkyscraperGuitars
@SkyscraperGuitars 5 жыл бұрын
It could be all of the above. I ALWAYS start with the truss rod adjustment. Small adjustments there can make a big difference. .010" is about as low as I go for neck relief, I like .012-.014. Then string height plays a big part. 5/64" on the bass side and 3-4/64 on the treble. Also, site down the neck. Is there a big swoop somewhere? Sometimes you get a couple high frets that cause all kinds of trouble. If the issue is in frets 1-9, you may need more relief. If its in 10-24 you might have a hump at the body or a couple high frets. A fret rocker can sort out if and where you have high frets. A string height gauge is essential to tell if you have a string height issue... Also, look at the nut relief. Sometimes the locking nut gets worn down. You should have a minimum of .018" at the first fret. If its lower than that, you can shim the nut up. That mainly helps with open strings, but it can also cause intonation issues. Lastly, tuning from Eb to E should create more string tension and allow for more neck relief. Typically tuning UP will not cause a buzz unless its pulling your bridge out of level. -Greg

I don't understand why they do this v-shaped spring thing and put the spring in the middle cuz the springing the middle isn't doing anything except vibrating and making noise. best way to do is put them all straight and then they pull evenly most guitars only need two and then you can put it in a V formation

That's a nifty intonation tool. But I stopped using feeler gauges years ago. It's much quicker to just use two fingers one at each end of the fretboard and you could see the relief. I don't you string height measurements either. I lower the action until it buzzes. Then I bring it up until it stops buzzing. That's the maximum lowest action. I call that the Billy Sheehan method, he made it popular .

The diagonal set-up of the tremolo springs, in this video allows them to maintain a higher tension of the outside springs, preventing the need to tighten the screws excessively or adding a fourth spring. Why do you intonate with the guitar laying flat instead of in a playing position? I was taught from luthiers the most accurate and proper way to do intonation is in the playing position. Also, setup intonation with a fresh of new set of strings not with old already on the guitar.

it's not wise to string with ball ends at the tuners. cut the ball ends off and put a couple wraps around tuner posts. this way if you break a string it's usually at the saddle, you can unclamp nut and unwind the string to re-clamp the saddle. by string with ball end at tuner if you break a string you have to replace with a new string.
