Best pundit in football - Jamie Carragher. He really is. I don't know any other pundit who so consistently produces very commonsensical interpretations of events on the pitch, and puts himself actually in the boots of the player instead of judging everything with the benefit of hindsight like we see so often from other pundits, and fans especially. The rule makers of the game have got themselves tied up in knots as far as I'm concerned. Not too long ago they spoke about 'natural silhouette' in relation to handball. They were on to something there, and they almost got it right. For players simply standing there, we all know what the 'natural silhouette' is - hands down by the side... not tight against their body or anything, but reasonably close to the body. _Reasonably._ There's the key word, and it's something that jives with common sense. So when you apply this to other aspects of the game (because obviously players don't simply stand there most of the time) you get other 'natural silhouettes'. Okay, it's not as straight-forward as with someone standing there where hands by the side is almost universally recognised as _the_ way people naturally hold themselves, but what Lindelof is doing while conceding that penalty is _a_ 'natural silhouette' of someone running - arms swaying back and forth... that's just how people run. So why are these cases penalised when the ball hits the arm, while, at the same time, when the ball strikes the arm of someone who is positionined in the 'natural silhouette' for someone standing there it isn't penalised?! How can they expect players to not run like people naturally run?! To not jump how people naturally jump?! While they're at it, why not penalise players when they kick the ball and their leg hits on onrushing defender while the leg pulls back to swing at the ball (back lift). It's the same thing - that's just how people kick things. What they are demanding of players now in the highlighted situations is like demanding that they never have any back lift while taking a shot.

For me only tottenham one was not the penalty. To me its all about circumstances. Ayew tries tolob de gea, and lindelof handballs it. I dont care if it is natural position, i dont care if it is too close, lindelof is impeding with potentional goal. Now it is up to referee to decide if the goal was likely. Example. Imagine corner being taken, and defender is on the goal line, ball drops in 5 yard box and striker smashes it. Now, defender has his arms in natural position, it is too close, but mate if you touch the ball with your hand it is a penalty, cuz I dont care that it was natural position cuz my shot would 100 percent go in if your arm was not there. To me goal takes precedent to everything. And also, Jamie says on Everton penalty that defender has to crouch an put his arms that way so it cant be a penalty, well then I can say the same thing for strikers, if striker is in his stride and he tries to chest the ball down, it is only natural for him to extend his arm so he can leverage the chest position. But then the ball will likely hit his biceps, and thats always been a handball, so it dont really matzer that you "have to position yourself" that way.

@@joeygarcia6810 He agrees that it's not a penalty. His point is that he didn't just choose to carelessly extend his arm for no reason. If he had then it might've been a penalty. But he was pushed in the back from the defender and that's what caused his arm to extend out, like you allude to when you say "have you ever defended a corner and got pushed?" Yes, he knows what happens - your body will react to the push, and one of the ways it will react is with the arms moving back (and outward and upward) because your body has been pushed forward. He didn't decide to extend his arm. Penalising him would be like penalising a player who took out an opponent after being pushed by a defender. You wouldn't call that a bad tackle, you would just say he his momentum carried him into the other player because the defender pushed him. Similarly, you could say Dier's body movement was caused by the momentum of the defender pushing him. Very harsh and completely unfair on him. I think we all agree on that. I think Keane is just mistaken in thinking Dier's arm movement is something he chose to do when it really wasn't.

Can we not just have a simple rule of “if it’s a deliberate handball, it’s a penalty.” This is the easiest way of dealing with this issue. Refs are incompetent which makes this difficult because it requires a little bit of human common knowledge which is severely lacking from officials in England.

That is what the rule used to be back in the day. I do think with the help of VAR the ref should be able to get most decisions correct that way. It is mostly easy to see if it was an accident or not.

yeah it's just really hard to tell what is "deliberate," in a subjective position. Not all the refs are incompetent, they are forced to make a ruling based on what the VAR analysis yeilds. It should ultimately be in the main referee's judgement to decide whether or not it's a deliberate hand ball, the way it's always been.

But that allows players to spread like a starfish, maybe with their back to the ball as they jump, and you can't say it was deliberate hand ball if they aren't even facing it. So I think there also has to be some consideration for 'arms not in a natural position'

The rule states ”the player has to be aware” I’m not sure how anyone with out 360 degree peripheral vision is aware of another player behind them heading the football on to their arm. Carra is spot on. Newcastle haven't even created a chance there but they've been awarded a penalty. It makes no sense for it to be very difficult to score from open play but a loop hole in kicking a ball at a defender's hand means you get a free shot on goal from 12 yards. Utter madness. I feel for Mourinho and Spurs, who have dominated a game beyond belief and dropped 2 points to a joke of rule.

Solution: indirect free kick from a corner of the box, in case of accidental handball. So the attacking side gets at least something every time in case of a handball. Easier to ref. Before it used to be 9 of 10 no pen, then 1 pen out of the blue. I remember Skrtl getting penalized for a similar to Dier's hand.

Another issue when it comes to judging the 'unnatural position" of hand is that there are different variables in that equation. People slightly differ in the ways they jump. How we position our arms and legs while doing it varies from person to person. Plus when the ball is whipped into the box with a lot of moving bodies, the outstretched arms serve multiple purposes like body checks, feeling the presence of attackers on the blind side etc. It's all sudden movements and defending set pieces are hard as it is. Defenders deserve more respect. Don't make them scapegoats to make the scoreboard look colourful.

It’s hard to really structure the handball rule so that it is consistent and everybody agrees on whether it’s a handball or not, in my opinion it should be up to the experienced officials to judge based off these 2 things: 1) Distance from the ball to the player 2) Position of the arm (consideration for jumping, running, falling etc) The officials should then judge based of THEIR OPINION, replays should be watched in real time and not slow motion.

I remember 15 years ago I was playing in an under 16s friendly match in school. The ball trickles into the box, bouncing in irregular directions: terrible playing conditions. I went to clear the ball but instead the ball rolls up my leg and hits my hand - no pressure from a striker, I was just trying to get rid. Penalty given. I remember been outraged, team mates shocked and the opposition didn’t exactly get it. Guess the decision makes sense now...?

Why is it when ever some thing is done to improve a thing it F..ks it up, royally. I thought VAR was just for goal line incidents not stopping a game 5 mins later because some ones boot lace touched a player, or the ball was blasted from 2ft away into some ones arm. it will end up killing the flow of a game and become all about the shirt behind the desk looking at it. I think this rule needs clarity. Rule should be different for if your hand hits the ball vs. If the ball hits your hand. If the ball hits your hand, which is placed in non natural position and the player is not in motion (jumping, running, turning)... hand ball If your hand hits the ball and the player isn’t using it to balance or prevent collision or a fall... handball

*Handball in the box should usually be a Peno* - but if your elbows are relatively relaxed by your sides (as if you were doing a bicep curl), then it's ball to hand. Other than that, keep your arms in so that your arms aren't blocking the ball. *Otherwise, you're risking it and it's at the discretion of the Referee. That's my opinion.* The time of the ball In the air and reaction time matters too. If an attacker strikes a screamer, defenders often don't have time to even see or react to the shot. *Again, it's best left to the Referees discretion of whether it was an intentional or game-changing handball - in the same way that it's up to the Referees discretion to determine whether Fouls are deliberate and/or gamechanging or not* - then to hand out the Free Kick, Yellow, or Red Card respectively.

It’s not about punishing defenders, the problem is at both ends of the pitch. There was Dier defending for Spurs vs Newcastle this weekend where we dropped 2 points; couple months ago Moura actaully gets fouled in Spurs vs Sheffield Utd, has the ball kicked at him when he’s try not to face plant after being scissored/sandwiched, resulting in Kane’s goal being later disallowed. Ok we lost 3-1. But if that’s 2-1 or even 1-1 score line with Kane’s goal as it was at the time, that’s a material farce

One more thing we need to consider is players who swarm to the referee straight after seeing the opponent player either deliberately or not deliberately touching the ball to win a penalty. Honestly most of the time when 3-4 players are doing that to the referees, they'd usually consider to give it a check and potentials of getting a card/pen/offside is very high due to this aspect too.

First time I saw this was Spurs v Liverpool Champions League final last year. The ball was played deliberately against Sissoko from no distance at all.

This rule was implemented last season in the top european leagues, needless to say handballs statistics and penalties skyrocketed. Same will happen in the EPL this season, welcome to the new normal.

I don't see why this has to be made so complicated, the handball rule should just be a player can't move his arm towards the ball when defending, end of story. As long as VAR shows a player didn't deliberately advance his arm towards the ball to change the trajectory of it, no foul. A player is entitled to use his arms as leverage to jump, just not move it deliberately in the ball's course.

Go back to old school refereeing for the love of football. If a referee makes to many mistakes give new refs a chance. You can’t tell me the ones we keep seeing are the best of the best. We’re all seeing the same game and instinctively know when it’s offside, handball, or a foul. If we’re gonna use VAR, replay the actual game footage at regular speed twice from two angles and keep it moving.

It's simple. If defenders are forced to keep their arms at their sides when jumping and defending then strikers need to also be forced to keep their arms at their sides when shooting and jumping. Any shot taken with arms out should be deemed illegal. Level the playing field for all then. Might as well turn football into a game of riverdancing with the ball.

The rule should be this.. If the ball hits a hand go to var everytime and if its deliberate or can be avoided by the player then give the penalty.. If its accidental... Don't give the penalty

Attacking players have often exploited the handball rule by purposely kicking the ball toward the defenders hand/arm. I recall a few times sly Sterling did so last year. He lifted the ball to get the defender to make contact with his hand and drew a PK. It wil be even more exploited now with this new rule. I think they need to define the rule by natural position/movement vs unnatural/purposeful movement. It needs to change.

Basically any incident in which the ball hits a defending player's arm away from their body will now be given as a penalty, no subjectivity.

For me they have to change the rule. If it hits the arm then it shouldn't be handball. It should be considered a handball unless it really hits the hand. Frontside or backside. Or if they will continue with it then they have to adjust the law. If it hits the arm and your inside the penalty box then it should be a indirect freekick. If it hits the hand clearly then it's a penalty. The interpretation of the law is also unfair for the defender when your inside the box. Defensive players needs to balance there body and the arms is an essential part of that. This for me is an alternative solution.

The referees seem to air on the side of "Its a penalty" instead of actually trying to analyze the footage which they have on the spot access to. It doesnt take a genius to spot the difference between a handball where a player intentionally uses his arm or prevent a goal or a goal scoring opportunity and a handball where a defender arm was out of position for a split second and a striker kicked the ball at it making contact.
