It frustrates me when people make that argument as the officials are an integral part of the VAR process. If the officials were really good then perhaps nobody would have called for VAR in the first place. VAR simply exposes how bad the officials really are.

I think, especially with the speed at which football is played at at the top level these days, if you have one foot onside, you're onside. At minimum you shouldn't be given offside for a body part that you can't even legally score with like you said but one foot onside, you're onside, I think it would be a lot less controversial aswell, English refs are terrible and always have been.

Changing to feet doesn't change the fact that people would be debating over drawn lines and a matter of millimetres. Just get rid of the lines altogether. Yes, review the clip but use human sight to determine whether its offside or not. If you can't tell from looking at it, then stick with the ref's decision. Simple.

Go back to the idea on which VAR was sold in the first place - correct clear and obvious errors only. As soon as you need to draw a line to work out whether the linesman got it right just let his decision stand (not that linesmen are even allowed to call offside at the minute - which seems like a massive waste of time them even being at the match to me).

@ComradeOgilvy1984
@ComradeOgilvy1984 3 жыл бұрын
Gary is right, it was always about ridiculous fine margins. The ARs did their best, and almost always got it right within 5 cm, but at the finer margins they were simply guessing one way or another. What has changed with VAR is the emotional journey around offsides is the worse. We were used to suffering occasional injustices about the flag going up or not, but once the decision was made there was no appealing and the game immediately went on from there, one way or another. As a Liverpool fan, I actually have no problem with the call on Salah. But fans who say the game is less enjoyable for them are making an important point.

The problem with this debate which I haven't yet seen articulated properly by broadcasters is this: the FA have made a mistake by introducing technology AND rule changes at the same time. Because of this, people are struggling to realise if they are upset with VAR or if they are upset with the rule itself. Gary is bang on - decisions made by VAR will always be on very, very fine margins, regardless of the rule, because those instances are exactly what it is there to do. If it's a clear decision, referees can and always have made the right call (overwhelming majority of the time). When you see an offside given because someone's finger is offside, ask yourself: am I annoyed because VAR caught that, or am I annoyed because the rule currently dictates that someone's finger can mean they are offside? Currently, VAR is getting the decision right - the real question is if we want that to be the correct decision.

idk if it was true or not but on twitter I saw a post describing how the Dutch league uses VAR for offsides. They use the same blue and red lines as the prem and each line is 5 cm wide I think, but if they two lines are touching then the call will not be overturned. I quite like that rule because it will prevent the stupid calls being overturned where even if you look at the image for 5 minutes you can't see how the player has been ruled offsides

Football has always been an exciting special beautiful game, I’d rather have the wrong decision given than have to wait for VAR.. (once upon a time this was normal btw!) football now is not the game I fell in love with, it was at its peak of the 90s in my opinion and I wasn’t even born then but it just got taken over by money

.Stake was high,is high and will always be high.Just bcoz u are wealthy club doesn't mean u dont care about money or wont be affected if u lose money.What about the fans,the people working in the club.Not everything is about money but we have to understand that 1 mistake or flaw could be the reason a club wins a league or not,will be relegated or not,will play in Europe or not.Its not always about money.
@ashwilliams4959
@ashwilliams4959 3 жыл бұрын
@@ashminrai7481 for the owners it's only about money to them it's a business and when your spending millions a week on wages and are losing out on Europe spots, finals, relegation, it's not just an on pitch decision being affected you could be losing an entire franchise. Look at pompey, Bolton, Blackburn, Boro, Charlton, all ex prem teams that disappeared because of relegation
@jonathant4201
@jonathant4201 3 жыл бұрын
@@ashminrai7481 That was always the case though. My point is that clubs can survive now with the wealth. Yes relegation will cost but it’s relative. Wrong decisions have always had an effect and that’s just how it is. Rich or not rich. Ultimately the best team wins the league and the worst go down. It’s flawed and great because of that. It was an accessible sport because of it (unlike Cricket, Tennis etc that are too singular and close off to the masses).

@@RubyRose-tu1px i would change some things but doesn’t have to do with VAR it’d other rules. Var works in so many other countries but ours, that’s not because of the system it’s because of the people behind it. The handball rule is dumb but again i don’t care if a players is offside by an inch or a cm offside is offside. If the player is offside then it means they had an unfair advantage

It is better used in different leagues which is proof it can work but they’re over analysing every offside and to say offside is offside is stupid, if 2 players feet are in the same position but the attackers hand or armpit is ahead that shouldn’t be offside. Needs changing clearly

The biggest problem is its inconsistency ,Bamford was caught offside for pointing where he wants the ball and was classed as offside then a game a week or so later the same thing happened and the player was onside 🤔 Bamford against Everton actually started pointing in the wrong direction in code for the right direction so his arm is not offsidr and keeping his other flat to his body as he runs . Its ridiculous. Inconsistency and stupid rules with it are the problem.
