This morning in my hometown I saw a young lad riding a chromoly Mongoose bmx with yellow tuff wheels! Was definitely and older bmx but looked frikkin awesome. Good to see the younger generation getting into it.

I had the opposite happen. I got a generic bmx bike for x-mas 1980 from, I think, Montgomery Ward. Or a similar dept. store. It was stolen while parked in front of my house in 8th or 9th grade. My dad was pissed at me for leaving it out unlocked. But that opened the door to my finally getting a Mongoose, with Tuffs from a kid in the neighborhood, for only 50 bucks. And my dad was pissed he had to shell out even that much! That goose had seen better days, the kid that had owned it was a big fat fucker. But I finally had a Mongoose, with tuff wheels.

Yellow Skyway Mags were great on a ROSS bmx bike I had in 1981 and the heavy duty inner tubes lasted longer and took the bumps real well. (GOOD WORK SKYWAY MAG COMPANY)

A friend of mine, in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, was one of the first kids in our neighborhood to get a Chromoly Mongoose with blue Tuff wheels, had to be late ‘81-‘82, it really was a major breakthrough with bicycle technology. It was $350 (~$1200 now) at the time, which was, as Jeff Spicoli put it, “righteous bucks”, especially for a bike for a 13 year old kid. Certainly kicked the crap out of the “pot metal”, “boat anchor” weight Ross Apollo bike I got a few years earlier for $78.00

in 86 or 87 I had enough money for a the GT Pro World Tour in chrome....it was 10.490ats (austrian Schillings). around 8.000 came from me. Then my mother brought me a yellow pro performer with blue tuffs. I was angry for years. Today I would apprecaite this bike, but still not more than the chromed Pro World Tour....the World Tours were just so beautiful.

I loved the original black tuffs with the gold anodized hubs, they were cool looking. Didn't like to ride tuffs tho because they were too heavy. I did/do like the pedals tho. I still have an old Skyway i just tuned up for my 10 year old. He has one of the new skate park type bikes that are way nicer, better quality, better geometry and better materials etc… but for some reason he likes the old skyway. in his defense It is cool

the black with the gold metal insert were the graphite-tuffs.....oder model, twice as expensive

The graphite Tuff Wheels where it. The Z rims sucked, they would bend and flex back but your spokes were metal and did not have that capability, I know cuz I had them.
