Skyway TA BMX - Back to the 80's with this old school BMX plus a few memories

Back in the 80's I loved BMX's but never owned one of the iconic bikes. Skip to the 2000's and I restored a few and have kept hold of my Skyway TA. In this video I think back to the good old days and have a detailed look at my TA. Enjoy!

Crazy how much these bikes are selling for right now! Happy I still have my skyway TA from back then. Got it for my 6th bday I think, my mom got it from someone for $50! Rode that thing everyday for years

I love skyway always wanted one I did get the tough wheel too though on my hutch ProStar freestyle bright and still have it do it in like 83 51 now oh how time flies those are some good old days everybody was happy

In the 80’s I had a Chrome GT Pro Series XL BMX Bike with Chrome 180-mm Redline 3 Piece 401 Flight Cranks with Sealed Bottom Bracket.

I got a chrome Skyway T/A XL frame for Christmas in 1985 or 6. Used my paper route $ to build my custom dream bike piece by piece. Set it up for freestyle. It got stolen a few years later. I still miss that thing!

My Mongoose was nickel plated. I didn't understand it at the time but to my dismay no matter what I did, I couldn't get it to shine like chrome!

I have noticed the modern remakes of this frame have V Brake`s and a 1 .1/8 inch Head tube and the Skyway Tuff Wheels do not bare the Void your warranty sticker on the inside of the rim if you use the wrong brake blocks.When the commentator mentioned Raleigh Burners i always remember the early 1980`s everybody used to swap their Yellow Tuff Wheels for the lighter Araya`s so you would often see mismatched bikes with tuff wheels with Black tide marks on the rim surface because of the rush to swap with the myth that if you Buckled your tuff wheel you could straighten it by putting it in the fridge ? Raleigh later on brought out replacement hubs for Tuff`s because of implosion issues but that joy was latter marred by the uneducated grinding of the wrong side of the hub rivets.

Nice job 👍 When Matt Hoffman rode for skyway he could have picked any of their fancy new freestyle frames but he chose to ride an old TA frame. I think he really liked the geometry and how light and strong it was. Just another reason that frame is such an iconic piece of BMX history.

That's almost the last BMX bike I had in the 80s. Mine was chrome with red accents. CW bars, Redline neck, 1 pc Takagi cranks (180s), red Kashimax on a GT laidback seat post. Never had the Star rims thought, always spoked. Probably should have, I went through a few sets of rims.

Great video....I had a GT pro performer in chrome with black tough 2’s think it was 83/84 we had some great bikes back then...lad next door had a Haro sport lad up the road a quadangle...I had a Dyno plate gt bars and seat post....panaracer freestyle tyres graphite peddles and diacomp brakes.....I think the crank was a gt one not the racing inspired flight crank....brilliant times

Thanks Alastair, you mentioning the Dyno plate made me think of the Zeronine plates - remember them. There were so many cool bikes and brands around then. ProPerformers were brilliant bikes and a couple of mates had a Haro and a Quadangle with Landing gear forks. They were brilliant times.

Nice video, back in High school everyone wanted a Supa-Roo, Skyway, Redline or Diamondback. Wow if only we had kept them all. I seen a crusty old Supa-Roo not long ago in a 2nd hand junk shop. The Kangaroo cut out near the head tube gave it away

Nice ride. This is one of the best looking frame and forks ever made. Looks extra sick in chrome. Skyway also made handlebars with a double crossbar, I broke them in a week. :-D

For an original Redline Serie 3 500a, you're talking, in mint condition ( as mine was ) £3500 - £5000 Sterling! I had the only Redline 500a in the whole Manchester UK area at the time ( early to mid 90's) These bikes were rare even then, nevermind nowadays! Just a superb piece of kit all round! I've even gone as far as to consider now I have the skillset, to remanufacture a Redline to the exact specs of my '84 model. All the parts are still available for it from the Ukai rims to the SR stem and pedals with Dia Compe brakes!

My first bmx was a Hawk Scorcher too after that I was lucky and had a Torker 280x which I adored, a gt performer and a haro sport. So many fond memories of that period loved those days

1979 SE racing team used the Skyway forks before they made the Landing gear.and Perry Kramer used Skyway mags for his 1979 Championship #1 plate.

I was an 80's kid. Yes indeed, we grew up when helmets weren't common, but the injuries were. I have been riding all my life. Skyway, Redline, Auburn, Dyno, GT, Hutch, Haro, and one of my favorites was my Kuwahara RF. I was told it was only one of fifty produced. It was a quad tube frame. 2 bars on the top and 2 tapered bars from the neck to the crank housing. Kinda like the Skyway frame tapered tube geometry. From starting with Schwinn, Huffy, Murray, Mongoose, Diamond Back, and more, I have had fun on a lot of those bikes over the years. I love biking!! My modern day urban shredder is a 2010 Trek Gary Marlin Fisher 29'r single speed with disk brakes. It's like riding a better fitting BMX. No shifting, no chain slinging, no complications. The large wheel diameter allows for riding curbs and stairs much easier. I'm getting too old to bunny hop a curb when moving fast. Not too old to hang on the back of a scooter and slingshot down a hill at 45+ MPH.

I got a ta in 84 for my 12th birthday I loved it. Went to see bmx bandits at the cinema that day too. Great video I used to have 2 finger brake grips, cw handlebars chrome frame, I heard they re did the frame in 20 and 24 somewhere about 2005 to 2008 for £479 approx it sold like hotcakes. Just had a white hoodie custom designed with huge skyway ta logo on front and skyway recreation on the back with the racing red stripe and skyway going down the arm (just like their skyway team racing ones) it looks really good and he did it for 26 quid on ebay he can do any size upto 5xl I'm well chuffed with it as it brings back memories of 84 to 87.

I still have my 84 skyway TA. In white with white Haro Vector bars. Single pinch redline 401’s in 85mm. Pro class wheels with sealed GT hubs. GT seat and GT laid back seat post. MX 1000 and terry cable. ✌🏼 Nice bike you got there 👍🏼

Brilliant...69 born me.. lived the seventies eighties buddy..I was the same I didn't have money for a good one I ended up with a resprayed burnt red Raleigh burner yellow mags chrome everything..all my pocket money went on it...fast forward I'm 52...I've just found a old original Diamondback really good nick ..in a charity shop..in jersey the channel Islands.. mental had to buy it £45...omg. The Skyway TA tubing was not Tru Temper it was Ishawata sourced from Japan. Frames were actually built using Japanese tube sets and initial production started in Japan before US production got started.
