Especially good considering it was quite windy. You can even hear the passengers gasp a few times on approach, as we dropped.

A nice catch of the UPS 747 a few thousand feet below you at 01:18 and the contrail of another westbound flight nearby and just above. Busy airspace! Sounds like the nursery came to life at 5:13.... I've never flown on an A-330 but I'm impressed with how quiet it is.
@sla31 Жыл бұрын
I can't remember what was going on. Maybe it was the flight attendants picking up trash from the meal service, but whatever it was, I'd stopped recoding for just a second. Turned back to the window and that 747 was right there. It's too bad I didn't get the whole thing. And as for the nursery, it always seems to happen on approach after a long flight. Maybe it's the pressure changing, or just the decrease in white noise. Whatever the cause, you can almost always count on children crying during the approach on a long flight. Anyway, thanks for watching my friend!

ahhh, nice landing in Ogg...I was curious, do you have a "milk" run for Hawaiian islands in your collection?
@sla31 Жыл бұрын
Well, there really isn't a "milk run" type flight throughout Hawaii. Between Hawaiian, Southwest, and Mokulele, the inter-island markets are pretty much all hub and spoke at this point. With Honolulu being the hub and the rest being the spokes. There isn't really any flights that run from, say, ITO-KOA-OGG-HNL or anything like that. What there is though, is United's Pacific Island Hopper. It's the milk run of the Pacific, and it starts in Honolulu, and ends in the US territory of Guam. It stops 5 times along the way. Twice in The Marshall Islands, and three times in The Federated States of Micronesia. I took this flight early last year. And you can find it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2jUmamug5yniM0

Yes, I feel jet lagged from watching this video. Looks like you did this the day before DST ended so this means that you gained 3 hours and then, the next day, you lost one of those hours. Whew! I'm feeling even MORE jet lagged now! Back in 2006, my GF and I flew from Halifax, NS to Seattle, gaining 4 hours and 2 hours later, the cocks went back to DST and we gained a FIFTH hour, added to our jet lag. When you fly out of LAX over to The Asian Pacific countries, you go along the entire CA coastline before you head out over the Pacific. Anyhow, great views of the CA coastline and yes, I did indeed follow all instructions given by the flight crew and filled out the proper forms before entering HI.

Great fly! What's the worst airline in 2022 that you experienced?
@sla31 Жыл бұрын
American 😂. And I flew frontier in 2022, so that’s saying something. Under Doug Parker American really became a ship without a compass and sadly none of their employees knew what the airline was supposed to be. On one hand they were adding first class amenities and trying to pursue the business travelers, but on the other hand they were trying to squeeze as many seats in their planes as physically possible. They can’t be Delta and Spirit at the same time. There’s a reason I’m dripping from Platinum Pro to Gold this year on American. I just genuinely don’t enjoy flying on American anymore.
@amberhall1119 Жыл бұрын
The views during both the take off and landing are gorgeous! I've noticed on a few of the flight videos I've watched that sometimes the flight crew will ask for the window shades to be lowered/raised. I've never experienced being asked to do that before. Do you by chance know why they do that? I can't imagine it's to check blind spots like I do in my car. Lol
@sla31 Жыл бұрын
It varies by airline, but generally there's two reasons. One for why they request you open them and one for when they request you close them. When they request them be open it's for safety reasons, but as you said, not to check for blind spots haha. The reason is the same reason why they turn off the cabin lights for departure or arrival when it's dark outside. In the event of an emergency, where everyone needs to evacuate the plane, it's best for the cabin lighting to be as close to the outside lighting as possible. This means everyone's eyesight is already adjusted to what the conditions are like outside. So, when they ask for them to be open for takeoff or landing, it's so the cabin will be close to the outside conditions, so people aren't stumbling while exiting because they're being blinded by the sunlight, or they can't see because it's pitch black. Not every airline does this though. Some only require those seated in the exit rows to keep them open for takeoff and landing. Now, when they ask to keep them closed, it's generally because (and this sounds kind of bad), but it's really the only reasons... People tend to sleep when the cabin is dark. And airlines, especially Hawaiian Airlines, are known to bug people to close their windows to "enhance the onboard experience for everyone." Which in reality just means that more people are going to sleep, and they have to spend less $$$ on amenities and food and drinks...
@amberhall1119 Жыл бұрын
@@sla31, this is so interesting! Thank you for taking the time to explain. That last part does sound about right unfortunately. 😅 I would have never thought about needing to acclimate a person’s eyes to certain conditions. As I’m learning more about aviation and the safety practices of the industry I’m absolutely in awe of what they’ve thought about!

I don't get this flight path at all -- takeoff heading west out into the Pacific; turn north, then east going inland? How do you wind up in Maui? Was there some massive weather to go around?
@sla31 Жыл бұрын
There wasn't any weather, but what was there were incredibly strong headwinds. The winds were very strong farther south, so we flew north towards San Francisco before heading out over the Pacific. Doing so may seem like a bad idea, but the winds were so much calmer up north that we arrived sooner than we would have if we'd just flown straight out from LA.

Nice video I live on the Big Island and usually avoid OGG as that short runway normally inv9ves screeching stops and I have been on two missed approaches!What is your feeling about OGG runway length?
@sla31 Жыл бұрын
Well, this is an interesting one. At 6,998 feet, OGG is short considering it regularly see’s wide body traffic from the mainland. But I have landed on much shorter runways before. Including the worlds shortest commercial airport runway, which is only 1,300 feet. Only a few hundred feet longer than the flight deck of the USS Enterprise. My home airport in Joplin Missouri has a 6,500 feet long runway. Another comparison, Sint Maarten (SXM), which is the Caribbean airport nitrous for its “short” runway, clocks in at 7,546 feet. Although SXM has a mountain obstructing the end of the runway which adds a whole separate level of difficulty. In reality 7,000 feet is plenty for all of today’s aircraft to stop on. What adds to the challenge on Maui is the wind. The wind that is often funneled and magnified thanks to the valley that the airport sits in. I’d bet your missed approaches had more to do with the wind than the runway length. Personally, I don’t have any reservations when flying into OGG, but it sure isn’t the 11,000 feet long runway that Kona has haha.

I miss that the A330 is not being used on many of the mainland flights now that the A321neo took over. I would say it is a better replacement for the 717 for the inter-island flights as I always feel like the A330 is a better fit for those transcontinental flights.

What time did you get to the airport? Did you have to check a bag? How long did that take? Did your seats come with a tv where you at the seat next to you could pick you media? Thanks, I have a flight around same time next week.
@sla31 Жыл бұрын
I never check bags. I also have TSA PreCheck, so I arrive at the airport 1 hour before boarding. Doesn't matter what airport, doesn't matter how big or small. I get through security in under 10 minutes every time. So, I'm not sure how much help that will be for you. The seat does have a PTV in the armrest that can be used after takeoff. And yes you can pick whatever you want to watch. Hope that helps.

Cam mounted onto the window? Suction cup mount thing?
@sla31 Жыл бұрын
No, I hold the camera by hand. Even on the longer flights, and no, I'm not joking. I film with iPhones, which have amazing cameras, but they aren't designed to be action cameras. If you stick them to the window with a suction cup, the vibrations from the engines get transferred into the lens of the camera and it causes the footage to have ripples going through it. It's all warped and distorted. Holding the camera by hand is the only way to get rid of this problem because you can isolate the camera away from the aircraft completely.

Great video! Over the years I have been favoring airbus over boeing. Whats your take on it? Also, do you think the A321XLR is going to be a sufficient replacement for the 757? I've always viewed the 321 as a replacement.
@sandyhanson6082 Жыл бұрын
As the saying goes..."If it ain't Boeing I ain't going"😉!
@sla31 Жыл бұрын
Well, I obviously fly a lot. And as an aviation enthusiast I'll fly on anything. Even a CRJ-200 haha. That said, as passenger who does notice things that make flights more comfortable. I have to say that I pretty much find myself leaning towards Airbus on pretty much every size of aircraft. Their A320 series is always more comfortable than the equivalent 737, and I find all of their wide bodies to be more comfortable than Boeing wide bodies too. So, I'd have to agree with you, that I tent to favor Airbus for passenger comfort. As for the 757 A321 debate. The A321 was always.... Kind of a 757 replacement. But, it never really lived up to the 757 in terms of range. When American retired their 757's and put regal A321's on their LAX-Hawaii flights, they frequently had weight problems. I.e., they couldn't fly the route fully loaded because their range was being pushed to the limit. Meanwhile, United was running 757 flights from Denver to Hawaii. The A321XLR, I think, is the first true A321 that can truly be a 757 replacement. The A321NEO was a huge step towards that, but the XLR will really match what the 757 could do.

Do you think it is a good thing that Hawaiian chose the 787 instead of the A330neo ?
@sla31 Жыл бұрын
No, but that's because I don't like the 787 and their "crew controllable" dimable windows. Otherwise, they're going to be quite nice haha. Hawaiian is notorious for their crews asking everyone to close their window shades, which of course, I can't do or I wouldn't be bale to film. My worry is that Hawaiian is going to allow their crews to just auto lock out all windows on the 787.
