This is flight 6 of 13 from my recent journey around the world. In September/October, I set out to circumnavigating the Earth, and after 9 days, 8 airlines, 13 flights, and over 24,000 miles, I eventually landed back in Kansas City after visiting San Francisco, Los Angeles, Honolulu, Tokyo, Osaka, Bangkok, Doha, London, Dublin, Munich and Newark. Over the next 4 weeks I'll be posting these flights in order, so you too can take this incredible journey with me! If the video doesn't have this bit at the top of the description, and in the pinned comment, it is not part of the around the world flights. Excellent filming sir. I used to live in Osaka and know ITM well. The terminal is fascinating since the renovation in 2021...the original building was a mixed domestic/int'l facility from the early 1970s, and became domestic only when KIX opened. They tried to increase the space inside as much as possible during the Covid renovation but it's funny now because some parts still have the original very low ceilings while other parts are light and airy. The roof deck is very nice, glad you found it! Lots of other little quirks...the full length of 32L is never used, and at 20:30 you had only a partial view of a park that has a map of Japan in its pond made of small islands, meant to be seen from the air. You also caught a glimpse of Mt. Fuji at 38:50. Also you'll always have a lot of bumps landing on rwys 34L or 22 at HND, because the older part of the airfield landfill has been settling and the runways have needed a lot of patching. Come back to HND soon!

Views have been up since this trip started. And more importantly, they've been up on the longer videos. I'm getting tons of views on Shorts, but I get like .00001 cent per view on those, so they don't make me any money. It's the views on long form videos that pay the bills haha.

And... he's off, fully in tune with his Inner Phl Koeghan. I admit that I was looking for Rodan flying around. Or Mothra. In War of The Gargantuas (1966), the green creature walks on the tarmac of HND, terrorizing everyone. I love how Japanese cities are laid out. They could teach us a few things about good urban planning and effective land management. They're not into the urban sprawl like we are. We're very bad about this here in WA State. Good view of the cumulus clouds. Anyhow, we're going to get hit with one of our November storms this evening, so batten down the hatches, secure the lines.

It's too late for America, the whole growth model is sprawl. Also Americans would never tolerate apartment sizes like those in Japan, a 'big' place for a single person in Tokyo or Osaka is 375 sq ft.

Can't tell you how many of your videos I have watched and learned something. I had no idea ANA flew props (Dash-8's).....saw 2 of them on your outbound taxi. On your last video (the late night departure from NRT) there was a WestJet 787 parked at one of the gates (had no idea they flew to Japan). Any preference ----B789 or A359?
@sla31
@sla31 Жыл бұрын
I'm glad you are enjoying them, and learning new things my friend! As for presence... I, 100% and all of the time, would prefer A350's over 787's. In fact, the 787 is probably my least favorite plane to fly on. And it's for a reason that probably doesn't affect many people. I absolutely despise the windows on 787's. I do not like those "dimmable" windows. It's like filming with a lens filter on all the time. They never get 100% clear, there's always some distortion of the actual colors, they also never get completely dark, and the biggest issue is... The crew can control them all. So, if you get a crew that just wants the cabin to be dark.... Bam, they auto darken all the windows, and then lock the controls. So, for me, as someone who needs to film the flight, this is like nightmare fuel haha. I have been on 787 flights before where the crew locked the windows and ruined the filming of an entire flight. And for that reason, I avoid 787's like the plague haha.

Hey Skylite. Thanks for this beautiful video. Loved the great view of the RR Trent XWB. Based on your last email, I have to wonder. You're traveling within Japan, so customs isn't an issue. But, you do have to go through security. Does that reawaken the "contraband" concerns? Anyway, take care my friend. Be well. Talk to you soon.

Why a big wide body on a short flight..good vid.
@haroldlipschitz9301
@haroldlipschitz9301 Жыл бұрын
Why? Look at a map of Japan. 35 million people in greater Tokyo and 19 million in greater Osaka, and they're about 300 mi apart. The bullet train moves a lot of people for domestic travel in Japan but flights do too. ITM is also very capacity limited, and widebodies have been used there for decades.
@sla31
@sla31 Жыл бұрын
As Harold has already mentioned, Japan has very densely populated cities, and the country as a whole has more total population than like 190 other countries. All with less land area than the state of California. Because of this, wide bodies have been used for domestic service for years and years in Japan. There are a lot of people that need moving in a small area. ANA even had specially designed 747-400D's sole for domestic use. I think they had well over 500 seats, and many of them were painted in Pokemon liveries. Those are gone now, but ANA still routinely uses 767's, and 787's for domestic flights. Japan Airlines uses 767's, 787's, and A350's. Japan's domestic air network is super interesting to study! Thanks for watching my friend!

Seems unusual to use an ultra long-haul plane like the a350 for a short domestic route.
@sla31
@sla31 Жыл бұрын
Japan has a long history of using very large planes domestically. Think about it like this. Japan has 125 million people living there. In an area smaller than the state of California. That's A LOT of people. A lot of people needing to travel to Tokyo every day. Of the 125 million people, 40 million live in/around Tokyo alone. That's more people, just around Tokyo, That means Tokyo alone has more people living there than 160 of the worlds countries. Japan has incredible dense domestic markets, and because of that they can easily ill very large planes on these short domestic routes. Right now, Japan Airlines uses 767's, 787's, and A350's for domestic flights. They just retired their last 777-200 that was also configured for domestic flights, and ANA uses 787's, and 767's as well. ANA used to have 747-400D's that were specifically designed 747-400's with over 500 seats. These were all used exclusively on domestic routes. Anyway, using large planes domestically is actually the opposite of unusual in Japan, it's kind of the norm. Thanks for watching my friend!
@fortythreenorth2518
@fortythreenorth2518 Жыл бұрын
@@sla31 I suppose they can't rely solely on their bullet trains especially if you're travelling from another island. I was just thinking of the a350 as being most notably a long haul aircraft but is also wide bodied and you can pack in quite a few passengers for a short flight. The ferry system there is supposed to be very good I you are not pressed for time.

Interesting how you took four flights in japan, but you spent everyday of it flying instead of sight-seeing the places. I mean Tokyo must have a lot.
@sla31
@sla31 10 ай бұрын
Well, I do enjoy traveling and seeing new places and experiencing new cultures, and occasionally I do spend some extra time at certain destinations, but to be fair I run this channel like a business. I carefully keep track of all expenses to make sure I can continue to create new content. And my biggest expense every year outside of the actual airline tickets, is hotels. And every night I stay on the road, the more expenses I have. So, when I do trips like this for the channel, it's not that I don't want to go out and sightsee. But, that's time I could be flying, getting more content. So, I generally try to separate trips that I take for the channel vs. vacation or actual travel, for that exact reason. Every once in awhile I'll spend some extra time somewhere. I've done that in Alaska before, Singapore, I'll be spending a full extra day in Amsterdam soon during a channel trip. In the end though, I have to keep my expenses to a minimum or the channel wouldn't be able to continue. Contrary to what some people in the comments think, I'm am not rich or loaded with cash haha. I do everything for the channel on strict budget. Believe me, if money were no option, I'd be doing all kinds of long haul international stuff every week haha.
