Ah very cool. The loud whine as he boards is from the ASU or Air Start Unit. Hence why they start an engine sitting at the gate.

It's definitely interesting that the flaps came down before the aircraft pushed back at all. Also love the 757 alot and glad to see them still flying.

Funny you mention the flaps as I have never seen that before on a Boeing aircraft, however I do notice that some regional carriers like SkyWest put the flaps down right when pushback starts but I can never understand why they do it.

@@JungleJetAviation06 They did an air cart start. Which means the APU (auxiliary power unit), which supplies AC power and high pressure ("bleed") air, the latter of which is used for powering the air conditioning, and the air turbine starter, which spins the engine core (N2) for engine start, was inoperative. That loud high pitch whine you hear during boarding and before/during start is the air cart. The air cart is pulled up to the aircraft on the ground by the ground crew. It supplies the bleed air to start the engines when the APU cannot. Although hydraulic system 3 should be up prior to start (another high pitch whine, albeit not as loud and transient), you need hydraulic system(s) 1 and/or 2 to deploy the flaps, which systems are powered by the engines. I would guess the flap extension is part of the Delta After Start checklist, which in this case would be done at the gate, but normally after pushback and start. Now, as far as SkyWest, I am a former SkyWest pilot, having flown the EMB-120 Brasilia, CRJ-200/700/900, and ERJ-175. The flaps on the CRJs and ERJ are electric not hydraulic, and as such can be extended anytime between pushback initiation and conduction of the After Start checklist. Personally, I never liked extending them prior to the captain calling for the After Start checklist, as no other operator to my knowledge does this, and it's completely unnecessary, but some captains would actually reach over and extend them if I did not. Hope you find this of some interest.

Glad you enjoyed it it my friend! The L1011 was, sadly, an aircraft I never got to fly on. At least that I can remember. I flew a lot as a kid with my parents and who knows what most of those were. Thanks for watching!

Good ole Air start (APU INOP). One of the most dangerous parts of being a ramper. It sucks unless you're 6'5 trying to plug in the ground power as the 57 stands pretty tall. Great video
@sla31
@sla31 Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah. Back when I used to work on the ramp for an airline (haven't for years now), we had a giant air compressor start cart. Not one of the fancy ones they have today. It was literally a GIANT air compressor on wheels. It took 3 hours for it to charge, and you got 1 shot once it was hooked up. It had a pressure release valve and it would start to bleed off air immediately if the pilots didn't have the valve into the engine open. I'd go up into the cockpit before we started and tell them... "If you guys don't want to be stuck here for 3 hours waiting for that ancient thing to charge again, you better take the air as soon as you say you're ready. As the supervisor, I'd stand in front of the plane with the headset one. As soon as the pilots said the valve was open, I'd give the signal to one of my co-workers to let er rip! And the hose was only about 20 feet long, so you had to get pretty close to some pretty nasty areas once the engine was on. I always worried about people when they went to unhook the hose... That car had like 450psi in it and it would use 3/4th of it start one engine. So they always had to do a cross bleed for the second engine. One time, when my guy at the back released the pressure, the hose got twisted and it blew the entire hose out before the pressure release even kicked in. It when flying everywhere and blew him on his butt. It was whipping around like an uncontrolled fire hydrant hose until I ran back and hit the emergency shut off. He was fine, thankfully. The large metal connector stayed on the plane and it was just a heavy hose whipping around. That plane didn't leave that day, as we didn't have another air start. Anyway, we always hated when the printer went off with the dreaded APU INOP message. I hope you enjoyed the video my friend!

I am just excited that in a little over a week I get to fly from Midway to Boise via Denver. I hope Southwest is back to mormal by then. Thanks my friend. I'm glad you enjoy the videos so much! I hope you have a great trip. I am lucky to do this, but like I've always said... I'm lucky to be able to do this, and travel as much as I do. It would be selfish of me to keep it all to myself. And that's why I post it all here. There are many people who long to travel and fly and don't get the chance. At least they can watch here and see what I see. There's a lot of people who travel a lot, but there aren't many people who take everyone else along the way. So thanks for watching and for your support. It's because you and everyone else support the channel by watching that I'm able to keep doing it.

Hey Skylite. Thanks for another great video. I was surprised to hear, or not hear the magnificent whine of the RB211 spool up. It's my second favorite engine; the GE90-115b in first place. As it turns out, this 757 has the PW PW2037 (formerly known as the PW JT10D prior to December 1980). I've seen comments about the great sounds of the PW2037. In this video, I didn't hear anything particularly distinctive, but I'd like to know if you did. I read your reply to my comments in another video, and I read that you got my email. No rush getting back to me-whenever you can. I know you're busy. So, take care and stay safe my friend. Be well, hopefully in less pain.

I did get your email my friend. It's flagged so I won't forget, but I haven't had time to sit down and reply. I had a busy week with doctor appointments. Sadly, with no new answers. But, I'll get to all of that when I write back. Anyway, these PW engines are at their best when you're in front of them. So, my seat position is what lets them down here. Great Boeing 757 video as always - APU must have been IN OP because they air started the engines at the gate which was interesting. Also sounded like they delayed shutting down the engines at the arrival gate until the GPU & Air Cart where hooked up.
@sla31

You are correct. We had to use a jet start at the gate due to a inoperable APU.

First time I have seen flaps lowered before pushback
@sla31
@sla31 Жыл бұрын
The reason why that was done here was because the APU (auxiliary power unit) was inoperable and the engines had to be started at the gate. The APU is the small jet engine in the tail of the plane, used to start the main engines. When it's inoperable, the engines have to be started using an air cart at the gate. The loud noise you can hear when boarding and before the flaps lower is that air cart. When the engines are started at the gate, the flaps and slats are usually lowered there two, as the pilots are just going through their normal checklists, and those always follow engine starts.

Yeah, 1h 27m. A lot of that thanks to the air start that we required at the gate, thanks to the AUP being inoperable. I list times as the full time I'm on the plane, from the time the door is closed until it's opened again. Not just the time we spent in the air. The actual air time was probably closer to 45m to 1h.
