Well, my own view is, and despite these other comments, I thought it was a good film about a nice place and community, and I'd like to go there and I'd probably stay cos I'd feel at home. I'm a million miles away, an Englishman living in England, where it's cold, cloudy and dark, I'm lonely and miserable and have no life. Slab city is warm and sunny and interesting, that's how it looks to me, I envy those Slabbers their life there and reckon I'd be a happy Slabber myself. One day, when it's just too bad to bear here, I'll make for Slab city. Thanks for this film, I loved seeing it. Alan, UK.

If you’re lonely in a place as crowded as England why do you think that would suddenly change in a squatter camp in the Commiefornia desert? I’m sure you have more in common with your neighbors than you realize and they would love to be your friends.

Youre just watching a short 10 minute video. its like a family picture where everyone smiles and looks happy but its just one picture not their actual life. Sometimes things can seem so great on the outside until you really get a real good look at what its really like on the inside. Think about this place in actuality where do they get all of their food and water and other things that you need to survive? Do they all have generators for electric? etc etc

Well, Dave, that's because we have 320 million people living here. There was a time when you could find places to live where no one would bother you... but not in your lifetime or mine. Every state that became a part of the United States agreed that open lands belonged to the Federal Government. Every one of those states requested the privilege of being a part of USA. If you squat somewhere, you are either on private land or government land... you are doing nothing to contribute to society, and in all liklihood you are taking from society in some way (stealing, soup kitchens, welfare, etc). Those who don't participate or contribute have few rights and little sympathy.

I do like Marijuana, but again not in the park. Common sense, goes a long way. +Dwight Stewart: You only offer your opinion, you gave no proof. That's cool, one man's dream is another man's nightmare... Freedom comes with many different ideas. Freedom for these people depicted in the video is related to the overreach of Government into their lives. They do not want a nanny state whereby they must do this or must to that under the supervision of the government. This is the freedom they seek. They want government out of their lives, the freedom they seek is to be free on the land God gave to man.... Cheers -

Like I told you before, It's YOUR KIND they are trying to get the hell away from. Do them a favor and get the hell out of there life, keep you nose in your own home... There is no other place to go. A wise man once said, "I think, therefore I am". How do you see yourself? It takes a mean spirited person to make a comment such as yours. Perhaps you have some problems in life? Most of us do, but to denigrate this fellow who was honest enough to share his past and who is obviously an asset to his community, however odd you may think it is probably says a lot about you, friend. Another wise man once said, "He who is without sin, let him cast the first stone". If Builder Bill is happy doing what he does all the way out there in the desert why go out of your way to judge him or detract from the happiness he derives from being the person he is? Maybe your rude comment makes you feel like less of a bum? By the way, I'd ask that same question to the 129 other people who thought you were so clever. You should spend more time learning how to be happy.

gage4g ....I don't live there, but have considered going homeless to pay off all my bills and save for a house. I'm 41, don't drink or do drugs, never have. I'm not even 420 friendly, except for cbd oil on medical. I'm sure that most people there are alcoholics, druggies and criminals, but don't put them all into one box, because they are not all that way! There are families who are down on their luck, or people with medical problems. I'm sure there are even people like me, who work, but are still living paycheck to paycheck and cannot pay off their bills or save. Keep us in mind as you judge. Some people are honest and just trying to get ahead in life!

@Catherine Buck ...I'm sorry about your situation! My mom broke her neck at age 19. She was in a wheelchair the rest of her life. Not paralyzed but, couldn't walk again. She had met my dad in physical therapy. He was her aid lol. They were married and that's how my brother n I were born. They eventually were divorced. I grew up in foster care. My brother remained with my mom. That is just a brief summary to let you know you're not alone and good things do come out of the bad. If my mom never got injured, my brother and I wouldn't exist. Sometimes even, certain blessings can only come through hardship. That's not to say we are happy to go through hardship, especially when we don't see the future. We don't see how anything good will come and we can often blame God. Not that you have but either way, I do believe, and yet, I have anger too. I never thought I would be a 42 year old woman with no kids. I too am on disability for depression and more and I still work part time. I don't judge others being on it because I know how it is. I have worked off n on through the years but never really seem to become anything. I have skills, desires and sometimes goals but my depression is a real kicker in the ass lol. The greatest hope I have is in God, which for me is what keeps me from killing myself lol. Don't give up hope because you don't know where homelessness could lead you. It's still on my mind too. Jesus was homeless and I almost feel called to let it all go and get out there on the street lol. For you, it could just be an in between place, or bridge to your next great place or endeavor. Maybe there is some kind of work you are meant to do and it can only be done if you're in the same boat, but what ever the case is, don't give up hope and always try to have a goal. If you go to slab, then go with a goal and prepare ahead for safety! P.S, if you apply for SSI, (Supplemental Security Income) you'll only get $760 but, if you apply for Social Security Disability, you'll get more based on the taxes you paid, plus, you are allowed more part time working hours without losing your disability income. SSI and SSDI are different. Also, Disability gives you automatic Medicare which pays 80%. I am on Disability and receive $940.00 a month. It goes up yearly as I continue to work and pay taxes. You'd probably get more than I currently do based on all the years you worked!

So, aside from Builder Bill and John, everyone in this video at the time of shooting lived at East Jesus. I'm not going to speak for the man that founded the camp, but I don't think he would have approved of the insinuation that East Jesus is Slab City, nor do I think a lot of Slabbers would either, but hey, what ever gets you press.
@jbodden69779 жыл бұрын
+sonofdamocles I must say I have not heard any Slabbers make public, published threats of gun violence against anyone. And lots of trash piles I have looked through have junk mail with addresses from surrounding towns as far away as Ocotillo... and not many slabbers have anywhere near enough solar panels to support massive electric stoves and bigscreen old style CRT tv sets... Not our style at all.
