On the beach is a masterpiece, my favorite album from Neil...i remeber when i was young, here up north Quebec, it was the perfect winter album . We used to take mescaline if there was a snowstorm, and go in the all window veranda and watch the snow falls while On The beach was playing...snow is a superb beach...

For everyone who know Neil Young just for Heart of Gold, Old Man (like all those reaction videos), or like Lotta Love, those songs are fine, but you're missing out on ssssooooo much more. Check out albums like On the Beach, Zuma, Tonight's the Night, along w/ Rust Never Sleeps, Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, & After the Goldrush. Phenomenal lyricist, singular guitarist, great melodic sense, and as honest & free of the BS as they come.

You forgot to mention one of my favorites, Hawks and Doves. Very under-rated, ethereal, spooky. On the electric side, Re-ac-tor and Broken Arrow. I'm proud to be a fan for well over 50 years. I hope he lives another 50 years, and can give us fifty more years of music.

This was the first time I saw Neil in-person. We were in the seventh row or so down front/left. So the first song I ever heard him play was a beautiful version of "Sugar Mountain" earlier that Saturday to kick off the show. Then he closed out later that night with this amazing version of "Ambulance Blues" w/R.E.M. Great memories. Couple years later, in 2000, it rained a little during the day and Robin Williams came out into the crowd and did amazing improv comedy set.

On the Beach is one of Neil Young's hidden gems. Not commercial whatsoever but had this great song along with ON the Beach and Walk On etc, it was obviously produced for the fair weather fans and the media. He let people know who was in charge. Homegrown was made about this same time, never released it until now was probably to commercial for Neil at the time

Great song,which ends with one of Young’s greatest lyrics. “I never knew a man could tell so many lies He had a different story for every set of eyes How can he remember who he's talking to? 'Cause I know it ain't me, and hope it isn't you”

This is prime Neil as solo artist. "Ambulance Blues" is one of his rambling songs that had lines/couplets that by themselves are so good and hit so hard that they equal or surpass other songs that have a cohesive lyric or great melody, or those with a great Crazy Horse crunch.
@virtualric
@virtualric 3 күн бұрын
““Ambulance Blues” sat dormant for 14 years until the 1998 Bridge School Benefit, when R.E.M. convinced him to break it out. Their live version is one of the greatest moments in Bridge School history, and it seemed to get Young back into the song, since he played it nearly 20 times on his solo acoustic tour the following year” - Rolling Stone

This is truly peak Neil, writing only as he and a finite few others can. The reaction video ppl won't touch this album, 'Tonight's the Night', or 'Zuma', let alone stuff like 'Reactor', 'Time Fades Away' or 'Ragged Glory'. Recent greats include 'Psychedelic Pill' and 'A Treasure'. Seems the reaction video suggestions come from a bunch of ppl who only listen to the stuff on Pandor/Spotify or the 'radio songs'.
