Orton-Gillingham structured literacy lessons thrive on interactive, engaging lessons. With the Slant System, students build strong foundational skills through purposeful repetition, review, and practice. One key component of our lessons is the "3-Step Drill," designed to solidify letter/sound correspondences and blending skills in a fun and effective way.
The 3-Step Drill is a multimodal activity used to reinforce foundational literacy skills, particularly effective for those with dyslexia or other language-based learning differences. As one part of a traditional Orton-Gillingham lesson, the goal of the drill is to develop automaticity in reading and spelling by using repetitive, structured practice of learned phonemes and corresponding grapheme patterns through visual, auditory, and blending drills.
In the Slant System, we call our visual drill "Look and Say"- The goal is to strengthen students' ability to recognize letters or letter combinations and associate them with their sounds (instant recognition of graphemes and their associated phonemes).
