Warning: Spoilers
It always seemed to me that a big part of the enduring popularity of Slap Shot (1977), beyond Paul Newman’s brilliance in the lead role, was related to Nancy Dowd’s script and her remarkable attention to detail. In essence, the movie gets a lot of things right about hockey, so I decided to create a video in which I would enumerate each place where the script succeeds in building verisimilitude. Dickie Dunn would doubtlessly be pleased: because of Ms. Dowd’s skill as a writer, Slap Shot "capture[s] the essence of the thing.”
