I love the VMR. I have my presets ready to go for whatever instruments are going to it and then it's just season to taste. I'm done with the days of fucking about trying to find the 'right' plug in that 'works'. This works for me and none of my clients have complained yet.

Really suprised to hear you say this. I LOVE Slate! I worked on an E and G for YEARS and I think all his SSL plugins are almost spot on! VMR helps my workflow greatly as well.

Barry, thanks so much for these amazing videos. Over the last few years, I have found myself deleting a lot of plugins I purchased over the years. I am now down to about 3EQ's, 3 reverb, 2 delays and about two compressors. The plugin market is an endless money pit, and it takes a lot of self control to stop purchasing them. I currently keep a sheet where I also track my audio needs, take time to exhaust the full demo of plugins and then wait for a sale before making any new purchase. Among the plugins I use, I love the stuff by Softube, Oxford, and McDsp the most. I love slate drums, but their plugins are not for me.

Hi Emmanual, I'm think the same. I do not need 20 Compressors or 30 EQ's. I'm ot a Collector of plugin's! I just wanna have what I NEED! Th's why I have no Slate anymore!. I like IK Multimedia a lot. I wave a couple of Waves I have SSL's. That's it!

I really like Slate plugins; have no issue with the mix rack. It's the fastest loading and least CPU intensive plugin I have on Cubase. The way you can rearrange the components so easily is cool. You can put that rack on 64 tracks it's not a problem. The compressors all have mix knobs; the channel strips are great; and the intelligent EQ is better than Fabfilter, IMO. Plus the resources which are part of the subscription are so well organised and put together. Tremendous value for money. I have deleted a lot of plugins now I use a few Waves; and Slate.

I personally have nothing against subscription models with plugins and software. I pay $30/month for Pro Tools. I keep it up to date and when i know I will not be doing much work, I pause it. I did the same thing with the Slate bundle. I do find a lot of the Slate stuff to be gimmicky, but Ive never used any of the big name pieces of hardware. I couldnt care less if they sound like the originals. They SOUND GOOD. And I could rant and rave about the Infinity EQ all day long. Even White Sea did a review of that EQ plugin and liked it. Its wicked good.

I’m pretty opposed to the subscription model for plugins in general. I like to be able to demo and buy to own if I think I’d really use it or “need” it. I get the netflix comparison, but plugins are tools that are ostensibly to be used fairly regularly, and at some point if you’re paying a subscription over years just to use a select few plugs, did you really get a good deal?

Hello Mr Barry Johns, I have always trusted your advice and your point of view on the musical/gear journey . I want to thank you for your true honest channel. I do have a question that I am hoping you might have an insight on... I have sent this same question to ssl and to slate, but the answers I received are vague. What are the details about the SSL and Slate subscription migration? I do currently pay a yearly for both. Are they offering the option that I could migrate Slate over to SSL and only pay one (hopefully same) price as one yearly subscription ? If so, what the heck is the process to make this happen? Sorry, If I am asking this question on the wrong video.
@BarryJohns
@BarryJohns Жыл бұрын
Yes that are both now under the same package. You have to migrate off gobbler and go to iLok. So this means when your current month ends, you car start a new one that is not gobbler based. You have to use separate download installers, one for Slate and the other for SSL.

For me slate for the price and all the value they give on the time worth the money. I think they add the real value to the subscription on the audio industry. But as everything in life they could do better in many ways but they offer great plugins.

I had a very similar experience with Slate. I tried it, it was okay, I quit it. I also referred to Steven Slate as a used car salesman a long time ago. I agree about the reverb. Their 1176 plugins are pretty good. Overall, I just didn't feel like I had any use for the Slate plugins, especially when I have better alternatives.

virtual mix rack i agree is a pain in the ass. its slower to launch than any other plugs, and if im honest, it really dosnt sound that great. not BAD... just not great. 'verb and tapes and kilohearts stuff is pretty choice though. i cant quite bring myself to cancel yet. im about 4 years into it.

Thats funny: Though i initially subscribed to slate because of his in my opinion great sll dynamics module, I now like the vmr because of the workflow. For me its fast and has good quality. the set an forget VCC option is cool as well, also the minor latency when oversampling compared to other products. What i really love is his tape emulation. Not really that good are the preamps, to me. But I get your point - when your workflow with external plugincontrollers isnt fluid.Also I dont use slate on groups and mixbusses. Here i use hardware or acustica-audio- which are great. anyway thanks for the video!

I am honestly at the point of going BACK to stock plugins. My mindset is changing to using outboard on the way in, and using stock plugins just to clean up mixes. Not change mixes after the fact.

I’m on the same exact page. I’ve done the Slate yearly subscription 3 times in the last 5 years and I’ve never been thrilled with it. It’s just...ok. Like you said, the reverb sounds good (liquidsonics) and some of the kilohearts plugins are nice, but all the Slate plugins are mediocre for me. Don’t get me wrong, the value is incredible if you are fairly new at mixing. But, once you get your hands on some better plugins/gear, you realize that the quality just isn’t quite there with Slate plugs. No more subscriptions for me. I’ve whittled my plugins down to exactly what I need, nothing more, nothing less. And I bought all of them for about the same price as 2 years of the Slate subscription. I own them, will use them for many years, I get better results and am saving a bunch of money, couldn’t be happier 👍

Have to agree, I don't like the "rack" approach to plugins either. One of the biggest drawback of the rack format is that you can't see what you have in there unless you open the plugin. i.e., with the standard (non-rack) plugins you can see the linear array you have inserted on your channel or bus. With the rack approach, they're all embedded within the one insert. (hope that make sense) Plus, I just don't like subscriptions, too. It's too much like a marriage-'till death do us part." :)

I actually did an in-depth analysis on this and that is not true. You are assuming that you never have to pay for upgraded versions of each plug-in over time. Also you are getting regular updates that are included, you will also keep getting new plugins included as they are released. If there is anything we know is that developers are constantly coming up with new plugins as well as updates many of them as well. Now the key is the monthly cost/volume of plugins you will use. Plug-in alliance as an example is only around $12 a month, at the end of the year they give you a voucher for basically the amount you paid over the year to rent them, to use to buy their plugins. We do this kind of thing with Netflix, HBO, and many others.

I will never use something I can't own. Because if you get something like Native on sale, three years of slate is all it takes to be over budget on something that wouldn't keep racking up. I don't like subscription model's in any area of life. It's a terrible concept and needs to go away.
@BarryJohns

You could pay for slate for 30 years and it would still be cheaper than buying all the plugins outright. They are consistently adding new plugins to the bundle.
