upper mids on the slate is a bit more harsh and hurts my ears at a louder volume. The vintage does not at the same volume. For the price though its pretty damn good

I noticed the same thing but it's subtle, thus not worth the difference in price. The VMS is ridiculously good and even more reliable than the vintage gear.

For me you can hear the difference. NOT in the dynamics of the mics but the noise floor is definitely noticeable. Neumann has this wider background noise.

The comparison is good and it is interesting to notice there is not a huge difference beteween both, considering the differences in the price range (may be a little loss in stereo image depth in the Slate, product of the jitter introduced by the digital processing, and some more harshness in the highs and less warmer mids). Although, it would have been better to have the same parts of the song to compare, as while the song is changing the execution and the notes are also changing, so is harder to notice the real differences between them. Keep on doing these comparisons, they help a lot when you have to choose the next mic for your studio!

the blackbird u67 slate sounds like elam251e to me or maybe c12
The U67 is warm and sweet . The Slate a little harsh but add some eq and you're pretty close.

I don't hear any noticeable difference with my headphones, neither in my PC speakers. I'll have to try on my studio monitors, but being a musician for 40 years and played loud most of the time in gigs, my ears are not that good as yours, that's for sure ! But you in the Sierra studios with all the fancy gear, did you hear any difference ? I'd like to know your opinion... Unless we get the wav files of the two to compare, it's difficult through KZbin to judge. It seems to me that you seem to appreciate the Slate ML-1 a lot ! But I have a question : what about the Antelope Edge Duo ? How can we choose between these two brands ? I'd like to thank you for your videos and the time you spent to bring them to us, I know they they are time consuming, but bring more :))))

The B-67 emulation has more deep lows. Try listening on headphones with good low end. The U67 is a very rare and old microphone. We are talking about 60 years old. Now, if you want to get the real thing (which means you have about 10grand to spend), please keep in mind the nightmare you will go through in case something goes wrong with the microphone, for example if the cable brakes or you need to change the tube or something happens to the power supply. You will go through hell to get that fixed. Considering also that you can change the mic emulation during mixing stage, for me the Slate ML-1 is a no brainer. The Edge Duo has a great build quality and you can have almost any polar pattern with it, while the ML-1 is only cardioid. Having said that, Slate Digital has more emulations to choose from, especially the Blackbird Expansion is really good, I use it all the time.

@@alexandroschrysidis379 Thank you so much for your input. It's very helpful. I heard that story before about these old mics and the nightmares they bring when you have to repair something. The Slate ML-1 for me at least with a modest home studio is the way to go. I already have a Peluso 2247 LE (Telefunken lamp) and a Peluso P12, I think that the ML-1 will be my last mic purchase 😊

@@alexandroschrysidis379 It has nothing to do with this topic but, what is your opinion about the AMS Neve 1073 DPX ? Is it as good as the original ? And what about the UAD 1073 plugin ? I know that you can never exactely match the hardware, but at the fraction of the cost... on the other hand I wouldn't mind to pay for the AMS Neve, it's a once in a lifetime purchase for my small home studio. I already have a Manley Core.. Sorry to bother you with these questions, but you have an immense experience in those fields comparing to me... Thank you :)))

The ML-1s are noticeable harsher. Furthermore U67s are more 3 dimensional. No doubt that U67s are better option in this scenario IMHO
