God I love slaughter beach, dawg. If I had to pinpoint a band with my favorite writing style I probably couldn’t do it but this would definitely be at least in the top 5. During quarantine these tunes made me feel so solidly less alone, like I was listening to a stranger, sometimes jake, sometimes not, pour out their feelings, create an environment or just tell me about their life. His songs feel so lived in. My favorites are probably their spoken word songs. I used to not like spoken word songs but theirs got me hooked.

I like your anecdote at the end because on first listen, Notes From a Brief Engagement was probably my least favorite song on the album because I didn't vibe with the sound, but with subsequent listens and taking the time to listen to the lyrics, it gradually became probably my favorite song on the album. I love the way the opening paints a picture of him trying to settle his nerves before playing live in front of a bar, and then it goes on to paint a picture of the scene inside and outside the bar. The line "With the ambulance drone, and the motorbike growl, and the dopplering radios of convertible cars" almost makes me hear the downtown streets every time I listen to it, and it brings me feelings of nostalgia for when my friends and I would go downtown almost every weekend.
@maggie8215 Жыл бұрын
HOW can u not like notes from a brief engagement ?? its so. Vivid in its imagery and the instrumental is so Gorgeous.. the way it builds With the picture he's writing and as we really get into the scene..... the synthy (? i think? idk music lol) intro and the power chords kicking in on guitar FEELS like how i think it'd feel to be Up There like on the stage with the lights and the crowd and the nerves and then when the drums and piano kick in as the scene gets moving.... and the SAXOPHONE.... agh i hold their music so close to my heart. i think im converting my work friends into sbd listeners, i keep playing them when we're cleaning the bar down for the night haha

I honestly fell in love with the monologues in the new album. It shows emphasis that Jake is always trying to look for new ideas to bring into his writing, and really take the listener to a whole nother headspace. In Notes from a Brief Engagement the part where he talked about him pulling out a new instrument cable gave me chills when I first listen to it December 24. Also, a modern lay is an absolute banger! Definitely feel like I’m gonna need to listen to the whole album some more this year too. I’m glad someone else appreciates Jake’s monologue, great vid Nate!

the thing that grabs me most abt the advent calendar/the album at the moonbase itself is that moreso than the other albums its like a looking glass into what jakes pandemic experience and life in general was. he moved from philly to a mountain town up north with an adorable little house that the home videos were recorded at and you can hear and understand the elements of moving and change in his new work. and now hes been the most active on social media that we've ever seen out of him, constantly giving us little clips of his life and art and inspiration via instagram stories. this is by far one of my favorite sbd era's just because this is the most revealing jake has ever been with his real life since holy ghost/the documentary. it just feels so honest and its nice to just live ur life knowing people as artistic and amazing as jake exist.

Your channel has been getting better and better. Great video man. Also as a huge fan of the many incredible parts of SBD’s music, I’ve recently fell in love with Mark Kozelek’s music of Sun Kil Moon and many others. If you haven’t already Benji by Sun Kil Moon is a great one to get started with their music, but my absolute favorite for all the ‘weird’ monologues, and spoken word like in SBD as well as the humor, meta fourth wall breaks, long winded and gradual progressing song writing that’s very intimate and emotional is definitely Mark Kozolek by his completely solo work Mark Kozolek. Please check it out and if you feel like it, lmk what you thought of it. It’s very long songs/albums so give it some patience because I know it’s not easy to entertain yourself with that immediately. I appreciate their artistic ability and them going for what they want, that being said, I think they do spoken word too much, every now and then is a nice touch, but the same sound heard throughout “at the moonbase” and “104 Degrees” is a little expressionless and done too much, especially when paired with music that tends to be uneventful (which isn’t always a bad thing) but it is almost like this is a concept band and not really just a band, almost like they are sticking to an element or a story when that seems a little unproductive.
