The marketing people who make trailers typically get unedited footage and are expected to make a coherent proposed capture of the essence of a completed film. I get the feeling the makers of this trailer just said, "WTF?" #SoItGoes
@JudgeJulieLit
@JudgeJulieLit 7 жыл бұрын
Actually the "incoherent," "disjointed," "ill transitioned," flash fwd to the past trailer montage aptly reflects the novel, Vonnegut's post-WW2 haphazard, sporadic and spontaneous "telegraphic" "time travel"s amid his narration of his present life. It purveys the kaleidoscopic nature of consciousness after a life of disparate traumatic events, in disparate times and places.

Only now, in 2022, I discovered this trailer. Might check it out! I have reserved hopes though. I'm a sucker for old-school metaphysical time jumping films. "The man who fell to Earth" with alien Bowie comes to mind. Also Pink Floyd's "The Wall" about childhood trauma of losing father in the war. To a certain extent "Birdie"...

Isaac Marion in the really old days the trailers consisted of scenes playing as a giant words came across the screen and a narrator said "starring joan collins as the damsel in distress in her greatest performance to date in this timeless thriller where she'll have to choose between the dashing luke williams played by john ford and james dean as the handsome and mysterious cowboy jake lawler of the wildest west!" yeah it's weird

also remember that back in the day when making a cut on film, its a lot of work. especially jumping around. Also Rarely would the film makers actually have anything to do with the trailer. Typically handled by the Distribution company, who probably had 40 other ones to bang out that week. Not to mention the Marketing machine back then was nothing compared to now.

Most of the film was filmed in the Czech Republic, especially in Prague. It is possible to see shots of the Prague embankments, the Old-New Synagogue and the former city slaughterhouse in Prague 7. They still stand there. Now they are preparing for reconstruction, preparing for a tragic Chinese market and public house, cafes, cultural stalls and other beneficial activities. The grand hall, where the main actort stays, is the Faculty of Law of Charles University in Prague. The cameraman was Miroslav Ondříček, the main collaborator of Miloš Forman.

The reason Dresden was un- touched until that late in the war was because it was one of the potential A bomb targets. By '45 it was realized the bomb would not be ready before the Nazi surrender so it was bombed the old fashioned way. It was going to get it either way. And so it goes....
@Gabriele_bln
@Gabriele_bln 9 жыл бұрын
I do not think one should say "bombed the old fashion way" as the way Dresden was bombed happened only one other time, in Darmstadt. They used nasty bombs which burn down everything. In Darmstadt for example 99% of the whole town were destroyed. Thats not in any way old fashioned. Still better than an atomic bomb, though!

I want to remake this when I get older, when I read the book I saw it like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, with live action mixed with a heavy does of cartoon animation. I think that would be really great, So it goes.

The book makes it out that Billy Pilgrim is schizophrenic and/or living out a fantasy life. The movie makes it look like all this is happening for real. I did love the movie though. Germany in World War II and Pilgrim's upper-middle class upstate New York existence from the late 1940's to late 1960's looked outstanding

I just can't see this being good at all, it's as if the book is written so that it can only be understood as it is, a book. And nothing else.

I beg to differ. Although I admit that I haven't seen the movie for decades, I remember loving it. And this was after I read and loved the book.

Jesus! Pick all the commenters who've never read the book! YES - It's just as disjointed and non-linear as this trailer! Personally, I think its grossly overrated, but still an interesting read ;)

The part where the locomotive enters the station reminds me a lot of the station in Cologne. But then again, lots of european train stations look like that too. I don't think this is a metaphor for anything. Prof. Vonnegut was trying to get it through to the fanboys that there is a price for war. I love his work, he was a great writer, even though he took a lot of inspriation from Mark Twain. People get inspiration from previous works of art.

This is all I could find from the IMDB: (writer: "Concerto No. 5 for Harpsichord in F minor, BWV 1056 - 2nd movement 'Largo'", "Concerto No 3 for Harpsichord in D major, BWV 1054 - 3rd movement 'Allegro'", "Goldberg variations, BWV 988 - Variation No. 25 a 2 clav. Adagio") Glen Gould is one of my heroes, who just happens to be Canadian. :-)

The Dresden scenes were shot in Prague because most of Prague's old architecture survived the war.
