To be fair, a lot of US States have names that aren't actually English, so to someone who speaks English as a second language and didn't grow up hearing them, it's probably confusing. I mean, you've got Spanish words turned into a name (Colorado comes from a Spanish adjective for red or ruddy, Florida just means flowery), you've got French (Louisiana, as in the French King Louis, Vermont, as in Vert Mont or Green Mountain), and you've got a bunch of names that come from native languages (Alaska, Kentucky, Iowa, and many more).
