The starting point of the modern Crimea dispute can easily be traced back to 2014, when Russia illegally annexed the peninsula. Throughout the world, Crimea continues to be considered Ukrainian, and only 5 countries, such as North Korea and Afghanistan, recognize its belonging to Russia.
But what if we look further, to the times before the occupation. And even to the USSR. What was Crimea in general in the mind of the average resident of the post-Soviet space? First of all, a place where you could go to the sea inexpensively. And in the second - the scene of Pushkin's poems, Leo Tolstoy's Sevastopol stories and the heroic battles of the Crimean War.
But for some reason, few people remember that Crimea became part of the Russian Empire only in the middle of the 18th century. That is, it would never have occurred to any Ivan the Terrible to call Crimea a historically Russian territory, if only because at that time the Crimea never belonged to the Muscovite kingdom. It was a separate independent state, and the Crimean Tatars successfully staged raids both on Moscow and on the modern lands of Ukraine.
And it is precisely about this state that I will now tell you. What kind of people were these? Where did he come from? How the Crimean Khanate existed and why in the end it lost its statehood and ended up as part of the Russian Empire.
