Was huge in thrash metal back in early 80's. Slayer, Exodus, Death Angel, Anthraxx, Sepultra just to name a few. This entire album just kicks you in the butt! Nick my dude, glad you appreciated this track. I'm an eclectic soul when it comes to music, and this 64 year old still rocks to this stuff!

If you're not familiar with Slayer, "Angel of Death" is a must.

I believe he needs to do the whole "Hell Awaits" album, it is a none stop Slayer action, it ends as it begins. The album has very interesting musical movements for the year it was released.

The "Reign in Blood" album is considered their masterpiece. A full abum reaction would be shorter than reacting to Cygnus X-1 books 1 & 2, it's less than 30 minutes long, but 30 minutes of unrelenting brutality. 'South of Heaven' was a less heavy turn for them, easy listening compared to what came before. Jeff Hanneman (R.I.P.) and Kerry King both have a very unique chaotic soloing style, but it fits the music perfectly. For a sample of 'Reign in Blood' I would suggest "Postmortem / Raining Blood". Most only react to the 2nd song, but the two really need to be played together since one segues into the other.

sadly i can only give this comment 1 thumbs up. i agree with everything you said, and i am in 100% agreement that postmortem/raining blood should be listened to together. fun fact: the last lyric in postmortem is the greatest pun in metal history.

My fave Slayer album. What a drum production!

Bald guitar player= Kerry King. His counterpart is the late, great Jeff Hanneman.

Scorched earth soloing. When this stuff came out it was also the time hardcore thrash punk too like DRI, early COC, The Offenders and MDC. I always thought there was connection between King, Hanneman and guitarists like COC's Woody Weatherman, Black Flag's Greg Ginn, BHole Surfers Paul Leary and Doomers like St Vitus' Dave Chandler. For a sludgy change try some St Vitus and especially ANY project Scott Wino Weinrich of The Obsessed and other bands

I would not put this as one of their best songs. I'd go with Raining Blood, Angel of Death, War Ensembled, Postmortem and Seasons in the Abyss as better choices IMO. #nicklexrequest.

i think this is the weakest song on the album. more often than not, i skip to silent scream and let the album play out from there. live undead is prob my favorite on this album. dave lombardo's drum fills are incredible.

1988, obsessed with: Megadeth : So Far So Good So What Slayer: South of Heaven Whitesnake: 1987(1987) Vinnie Vincent: All Systems Go Never liked Metallica, just find their melodies a bit…’earthy’ same way i think about Maiden. I like guitar sounds with cool/dark/diminished/mysterious and cool riffs.

Hi Nick I can't say I'm a fan of Thrash but I did listen. It's strange how musical tastes differ, because I love Metallica. I wasn't grabbed by the vocals to be honest but definitely interesting. Byee ! Jim X

To be fair I have always steered clear of thrash metal, apart from the well known Metallica songs. This wasn't as extreme as I thought it would be, although the vocals weren't really up my street. But I did enjoy the opening in particular. Thanks Nick. Another new track for me!

Good to see your appreciation for another Classic! #nicknlexrequest If you guys are familiar with the classic Queen song The Show Must Go On. Do you think you could react to my and my buddy Steve's cover over on my page? We made it into a metal cover and hopefully it doesn't disappoint, there was quite the production that went into it ! :) We are just a couple of Dad's who have a passion for metal! We'd love your guy's thoughts!

Hi Nick, I'm.Darran from Wales. A long time subscriber to your great channel. I would love if you could listen to a Metal request from me 🤘🏻🙏 It's a UK metal band called AKERCOCKE and they are one of the best the UK has produced in my opinion. Heavy but with progressive influences. I think you'll find it interesting. The song "Shelter from the Sand" off the Words that go Unspoken...album. many many thanks. #nicknlexrequest

I wasn't a HUGE Slayer fan, even though I was definitely into Thrash . . . I KNOW this is "Blasphemy", but early Slayer was too raw for me, later Slayer just didn't resonate. I was a "Progger" 1st, so I wanted bands musicianship to be top of the heap. But the 3 albums that had outstanding riffs and song writing personally were: Reign in Blood (1986) South of Heaven (1988) Seasons in the Abyss (1990) And sporadic tracks during their history. My younger brother was already getting into the more aggressive stuff (Sepultura's "Beneath the Remains" & "Arise" would be my launching pad to more extreme bands), and then later would surpass him as he got more into Underground Rap/Hip-Hop, Punk and an odd list of various Metal bands (though he too was into various Classic Progressive Rock bands, but no Prog Metal . . . and he's a die-hard RUSH and Primus fan, in which we've seen both together numerous times). The late-Jeff Hanneman I noticed was becoming a better guitarist, while Kerry King was still a "noodler" (see/hear his "soloing" and whammy bar madness) :P. But BOTH were "Riff Masters". And come on; Dave Lombardo is one of the most influential Metal drummers out there, and has a style all his own (the "Lombardo Ting-ting"). I was MUCH more into Metallica ("..And Justice" would be the last album for me), Megadeth and Anthrax. But then I started my dive into the Bay Area Thrash scene, The Upper Mid-West Thrashers and all the stuff coming from Europe. But *Forbidden* from Northern Calif. would be my all time fave Thrash band, with a list of others that were more _obscure,_ and were becoming progressive in their approach to their brand of Thrash. This (South of Heaven) was one of my fave Slayer tracks as it was a new approach for the band and what freakin' catchy dark riff! (and "Angel of Death", "War Ensemble", "Hallowed Point", "Seasons in the Abyss", "Behind the Crooked Cross", "Ghosts of War", "Raining Blood" and "Criminally Insane"). Kerry King's voice though . . . it was MADE for Slayer's persona. #nicknlexrequest If you are ever game Nick, take a listen/reaction to *Forbidden* and the tracks (as an introduction): "Parting of the Ways/Infinite" from their 2nd album _Twisted Into Form._ Their debut album "Forbidden Evil" is great too, but I lean to their 2nd album, and they have a solid catalogue (well written lyrics too), but not many albums, having lots of hurdles throughout the years. The drummer for their 1st 2 albums was "Paul Bostaph", who later replaced Dave Lombardo in Slayer. The late-great 2nd lead guitarist for their 2nd and 3rd album "Tim Calvert" also appeared on *Nevermore's* excellent concept album "Dreaming Neon Black" as a very strong 2nd Lead Guitarist to the bands co-founder "Jeff Loomis" (and got to see that Tour, after 2 years seeing Tim with Forbidden on the _Distortion_ tour). - MORE METAL!!!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4DaZGaojdOtgM0 \m/

Imho, South of Heaven is a must have Thrash record, but the vocal approach is kinda meh for the most part in comparison to other albums!
