Every album, every song, EVERY GODDAMNED RIFF, you know it's Slayer. And they pull something out of me, deep and lizzard-brained. Adrenaline courses through my body, the pain leaves my aching, worn joints, and I am immersed in batle lust. And even now I will enter the pit, shoulders and elbows, fists and feet, heads and hands. And through the sweat, and the blood, and the pain, and the puke, there is brotherhood. There is JOY!!! I've gone to seed a bit, but my old 265# ass can still clear a space! I've been listening to Slayer since 1985, when I bought "Hell Awaits" on vinyl. I was 13 then, and 30 years later, metal is still my first love, & Slayer remains the one band that I can never tire of listening to. They are way better of a band than Metallica, who seem to get "best metal band ever" mentioned entirely too often in the same sentence, but in reality, Slayer is much more representative of the genre, & have released not one, not two, not three, but four classic albums in their career. What's even more amazing is they were released consecutively: Hell Awaits, Reign In Blood, South Of Heaven, & Seasons In The Abyss. Most bands can't muster one or two records of material that will go down as a benchmark in their genre, but this band has, undoubtedly.

Here is a formal English translation of the maxim inspired by Stoic principles, based on the song lyrics you provided: "In the somber theater of war, where blood and tragedy blend into a dismal tableau, it behooves us to ponder the transience and futility of conquests and defeats. Like a shadow stretching over humanity, each conflict reveals not our greatness, but our fragility. Thus, in reflection and contemplation, let us seek a profound understanding of our own nature, recognizing that true victory lies in self-mastery, not in the domination of others. For in every heart lies a battlefield, and it is there that the most important struggle is waged: against our own passions and illusions, in pursuit of the true peace that transcends the vicissitudes of this world."

@MrJackcorgi6 жыл бұрын
this was a great album compared to SOUTH OF HEAVEN .for me personally ,south of heaven is like slayers attempt at a pop album. dont get me wrong here... when it was first released, me and my friends played this tape 1000s of times and loved having a new slayer album after playing the others 1000s of times as well .i went to the SOH concert when it came to town,and probably have the stub somewhere it was a great show in a tiny club packed with rabid slayer fans. the band actually went to a friends after party (that i missed :-l ) i guess tom and dave were totally cool to everyone and kerry and jeff were total assholes to everyone.lol imo HELL AWAITS and REIGN IN BLOOD are their best albums musically and lyrically .
@SonOfTheLion3 жыл бұрын
@@MrJackcorgi I've always preferred the lyrics of SOH and Seasons. Songs like South of Heaven, Silent Scream, Blood Red and this song have much more important messages than anything on Reign or Hell Awaits. The satanic violence is fun but songs like these are profound. I think Seaons hit the right balance between Reign and SOH even if I prefer the Reign sound better.
@KasumiRINA Жыл бұрын
@@SonOfTheLion All of them are mostly satirical. Slayer used shock value for clout, of course, but the lyrics are tongue in cheek... I mean, Tom Araya supports experiments of Dr. Mengele as much as war crimes and bloody human sacrifice rituals. Difference is some songs are more gore for sake of it (kinda like Carcass or Napalm Death) and others are deeper but in the end, it's mostly irony on dark topics that were always bread and butter of Metal.
@SonOfTheLion Жыл бұрын
@@KasumiRINA A song like Silent Scream is about abortion and it isn't satire. Jeff and Tom where/are pro-life. Neither is Blood Red's anti-commie message or South of Heavens's warning about our fallen culture. What makes Slayer great is they aren't your run of the mill Death Metal band like Cannibal Corpse. I was at this show. Clash of the Titans, Wembley Arena 1990. The filmmakers wanted it to be a one-to-one mime with the album track, but Tom wasn’t having any of it! Neither were the crowd, who stated booing, so they played it live anyway (twice if I remember) and let the filmmakers piece it all together later!

I saw them only 1 X, & it was w/all original members in 2010, & I will never forget it! They played 'Seasons' in its entirety as it was the 20th anniversary of that masterpiece of an album! I am sorry you never got to see them live, but, they have released many Live DVD's & BR's though! It's not the same as actually being there, but, at least you can enjoy what they sound like live to some degree! It is a shame the Live concert they filmed of "Decade Of Aggression" was never actually released, although they claimed back in '91 that it would be! Sucks when bands mislead their fans!

I've ALWAYS loved how Tom stands there chanting lyrics all nice and calm. Out of the big 4 Slayer rocks the hardest,the fact that Tom's neck is all screwed up from years of head banging, alin3 proves that you don't hear any of the other 3 bands saying they can't headbang anymore ,ALL HAIL THE GREAT SLAYER!

My fav Slayer track is Spill the Blood. I love the fast stuff but they have so much of it, all kinda blends together. The heavier, slower, creepier songs stand out. Opposite case with Black Sabbath where gems like Paranoid and Children of the Grave are shining between gloom and doom.

To be fair "Slayer" means "stab your loyal drummer in the back, take his money and fire him" in Swahili. Dave should have looked it up before giving them his best years
@arvindshastry1178 Жыл бұрын
I would say Dave got even better after leaving Slayer. His drumming on all the Grip Inc albums were top notch and his drumming on The Gathering (Testament) was also mind blowing.

A Brilliant song. Brilliant video. Brilliant song title. And all these three things go perfectly together. The clip is made in black and white, which gives it a darker and militaristic atmosphere (my first associations with black and white films are a WWII and pre-war chronicle of the XX century). This video does not need excerpts of military newsreels from the Second World War, because the video itself is an anti-war protest of the band members. The musical component of the War Ensemble is no less impressive. The reef, reminiscent of a military march during the verse, best conveys the atmosphere of the song itself. At the same time, the song remains quite formidable and aggressive. The murderous solo, that begins after the protracted cry of «War», will not allow you to forget why the song is called the ”War Ensemble”. The lyrics also deserve special attention. No primitive lines, just poetry in the style of Slayer. “Sport the war” is an amazing comparison that is firmly hammered into memory. Every line in the song is imbued with horror. The War Ensemble is a masterpiece, that will never lose its relevance as long as the Holy Wars take place…

I was a huge Dead Kennedy’s fan back in the early eighties even though I was a young teenager. I loved Slayer from the first time I heard them. I was at this gig. The feeling amongst the fans waiting to get in was one of extreme camaraderie. We were all waving Slayer banners and sharing what our favourite tracks were. There were two American chicks there that had followed them to England for their gigs here. It’s very hard to find words to describe what the gig was like. It was an assault on the senses. It was so loud and brutal. I’d taken speed before going in, so I was full of energy and it all sounded so good. I remember my ears ringing all the way back down to Portsmouth on the train. The dawn came and I had sore legs and a sore neck, but I was still buzzing from the gig. I sneaked in a dictaphone to make a bootleg tape of the gig. The sound quality was terrible but people still bought it.
