As someone who has raced Pro F2000 I think you’re nuts for taking a formula car on the track with street cars.

I was thinking the same thing. If you have an accident in an open wheeler that also invlolves a road-going saloon or coupe, you're dead. The chances are you will drive straight under the other car and it will rip your head off.

I would be more concerned about the nuts attached to the steering wheels than any other parts of these street cars.

I have never seen a better illustration of how braking makes you faster than this video. Many of these street cars can out pull the formula car, but he eats them alive under braking.

Long, long ago, a friend and I were testing at Mid America Raceway on an open track day. A kid and his dad were out with his racing kart, so while we had stopped for lunch, several were asking how he picked his line, the usual stuff, and of course, braking points. He replied, "Brake?" That kart on that huge track never had to brake anywhere, he was flat out the whole lap. He didn't quite understand a line, but then it was like driving through a parking lot for him. Or like racing on the apron at Daytona because it is shorter than getting high up the banking.

We're not allowed to run our FCs on the track with closed wheel cars where I race, even on track days. CW would crush OW FC in an accident. It is fun to see them together though.

I know this joy. Not at COTA, but still fun tracks. I have had a few back and forths with Vettes that are 10MPH faster on the straight and then Formula car food in the corners.

Most tracks have sense enough not to mix open formula cars and sedans on track. It’s dangerous especially if the drivers are inexperienced. It’s a bad idea.

I race historical super formula ford (FF2000) and no way I would race on a track with none open wheels cars... That is so dangerous,,, you are a very courages driver. In fact open wheels are not allowed to race with GT's or so, only with other open wheels where I live. But , I have do give it to you ..... you have balls and drive well.... I had no doubt that you would beat them , its all about power/weight ratios and your OW has the best ratio in that pack.... of course you have a suspension that is set-up for track use.... good racing bud

Some vintage events combine open and closes wheel cars, tge open wheel cars have to realize they can't be seen when in close, always worried about running them over

You can see the effects of more horsepower: when the formula car is in a drag race with a more powerful car the formula car falls behind. The formula car has a higher top end and significantly better braking performance than the other cars on the track. The formula car driver also seems to be much better at finding the appropriate line through the corners than a number of the other drivers.

It is also very helpful when the forumla car only weighs 1100lbs compared to 3x of the car of the production super cars.

Formula car probably has more downforce and stickier tires
@anthonylathrop7679 Жыл бұрын
Most of the difference is braking performance. Some of the street cars can out pull him off a corner, but they have to start braking about 10 miles before he does. Cornering speed is also a lot better - mostly about low roll center, downforce, and a lot of contact patch area for the vehicle's weight - so yeah, he's killing them in cornering but even more so under braking. You can tell the better street car drivers because they are aware a formula car is coming up and they wave him past.

Thanks for the video, but I hope in the 5 years since this was posted, you've learned that being serial killer-level stabby on throttle is *not* the fast way to drive these cars! Your all-on-or-all-off throttle application in corners is almost painful to watch (to anyone other than your Hoosier supplier, lol). Trailbraking through the apex would get the same rotation you were obviously trying to get, but with *way* higher corner speed. If not, you need to rethink your setup because it should not require huge lifts of the throttle to get the car to turn!
